Harare, March 17 (Ians) Zimbabwe on Friday named a full-strength squad which features their premier players including Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl for the Odi series against Netherlands, set to be played from March 21.
While Raza and Burl are back from franchise cricket commitments abroad, the Chevrons have also been boosted by the return of Sean Williams, Tendai Chatara and Blessing Muzarabani, who all are coming off injuries.
Williams fractured his finger in January, while Chatara had suffered a thigh muscle injury in the same month. Muzarabani had been sidelined since last November when his quadriceps injury flared up during the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.
Though both teams are out of contention for a direct qualification to the Icc Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, the matches scheduled for March 21, 23 and 25 in the series can serve as a preparing point for the upcoming Icc Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier...

Dubai, Jan 15 (Ians) The Dubai Capitals got off to a flying start in the Dp World ILT20 after defeating Abu Dhabi Knight Riders by 73 runs in the opening game of the competition at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Sikandar Raza of Zimbabwe scored a cameo, 17-ball 26 as Dubai Capitals posted 187/6 in 20 overs. They returned to restrict Abu Dhabi Knight Riders to 114/9 in 20 overs with Raza claiming 1-27 runs in four economical overs.
Speaking ahead of their next match against Gulf Giants on Monday, Sikandar Raza said “We are really happy after winning our first game. I changed my mindset last year. I felt I was batting with a lot of caution in late 2021 and early 2022. But, we all freed ourselves when Dave Houghton became the head coach of the Zimbabwe team. Now we play very positive and aggressive cricket. I want to bat freely in every competition and the result will take care of itself.

Hobart, Oct 25 (Ians) Zimbabwe head coach Dave Houghton has indicated his players had pleaded with the on-field umpires to abandon the Icc T20 World Cup Super-12 game against South Africa on Monday due to unplayable ground conditions, made worse by the pouring rain.
Houghton, who was left fuming with the umpires for not abandoning the match against South Africa much earlier than it was finally agreed upon due to the inclement weather and difficult ground conditions, said it was “ridiculous” and not even a ball should have been bowled in those conditions.
During the chase, Zimbabwe fast bowler Richard Ngarava slipped and had to be taken off, even as the umpires kept the players on the field. Finally, the match was abandoned with South Africa on 51 without loss in three overs chasing Zimbabwe’s 79/5 in nine-overs-a-side game in a Super 12 Group 2 match.

Harare, Sep 22 (Ians) Zimbabwe Cricket (Zc) on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Englishman Steve Kirby as the new bowling coach of Zimbabwe men’s team.
Kirby, who was English county side Somerset’s bowling coach, is expected to join Zimbabwe side ahead of the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 that starts in Australia next month.
Kirby, a former first-class cricketer who played for Somerset between 2011 and 2014 apart from being part of Leicestershire, Gloucestershire and Yorkshire as a player, had re-joined the Club as a coach ahead of the 2021 season. The 44-year-old also worked alongside current Zimbabwe Head Coach Dave Houghton at Derbyshire.

Townsville (Queensland), Sep 4 (Ians) A day after the historic Odi win on Australian soil, Zimbabwe head coach Dave Houghton said the success should translate into more matches for the country and more tours to bigger cricket-playing nations.
Following two big losses, Zimbabwe spinners, especially Ryan Burl, turned things around in the third game, demolishing the hosts for a paltry 141 and then overhauling the target for the loss of seven wickets with 11 overs to spare for a historic win.
This was Zimbabwe’s maiden Odi win against Australia in Australia and was built mainly around spinner Burl’s amazing figures of 5/10 in three overs. This was Zimbabwe’s first tour to Australia for a bilateral series since 2003.
Zimbabwe have had a good run in international cricket of late, defeating Bangladesh in the Odi and T20I series at home last month before coming close to upsetting India in Harare in the final Odi.

Townsville, Sep 3 (Ians) Zimbabwe head coach Dave Houghton has said the unflattering performance of his slow bowlers had forced him to have a stern chat with them ahead of the third and final One-day International (Odi) against Australia here, adding that he was happy to see they had lived up to his expectations.

London, Aug 30 (Ians) Zimbabwe coach Dave Houghton has said he is ready to welcome Gary Ballance, who has been suspended from selection in the England squad for his involvement in the Azeem Rafiq racism case, to his country of birth.
Houghton said he “wouldn’t say no” if Ballance wants to play for his country of birth.
Harare-born Ballance represented Zimbabwe at the under-19 level but moved to England to complete his schooling and went on to don the Three Lions’ jersey in 23 Tests and 16 One-Day Internationals between 2014 and 2017.
Last year he was suspended from selection indefinitely by the England and Wales Cricket Board after being accused by former Yorkshire teammate Azeem Rafiq of racial abuse.
The requisite three years have passed since Ballance last wore England colours, so he could be eligible to pursue an international future with Zimbabwe. A long-standing family relationship with Houghton, whose wife is the cousin of Ballance’s father,...

Opener Tino Mawoyo, who became just the third Zimbabwe batter to carry his bat through his 163 against Pakistan in just his second Test, will be in the commentary box for the upcoming Odi series between Zimbabwe and India, starting from August 18.
He speaks exclusively to Ians about Zimbabwe’s stunning reversal of fortunes and what would the hosts be planning against the visiting Indians.
Excerpts:
Q. India are playing ODIs in Zimbabwe after a gap of six years. Both teams are coming off victories from their previous Odi series. What are your expectations from the Odi series between India and Zimbabwe?
A. Well, I am expecting some exciting cricket from both sides. But talking more about the Zimbabweans, I am looking forward to see the team carry on the form that we have in the recent past – The T20 World Cup qualifier Zimbabwe won in Bulawayo six weeks ago and...

That’s not all. The Chevrons, as they are called, defeated Bangladesh 2-1 to win their first-ever bilateral T20I series over a higher-ranked side. Subsequently, they clinched the Odi series against them 2-1, cheered on by a full house of home supporters.
Left-handed middle-order batter Ryan Burl was one of the main architects in Zimbabwe’s T20I series win over Bangladesh at Harare. From 76/6, Burl slammed 34 runs off Nasum Ahmed in the 15th over, equalling the record for the second-most runs hit in an over in T20I cricket. He eventually made 54 and shared a crucial stand of 79 with Luke Jongwe to set the base for a memorable Zimbabwe victory.
Burl, who had missed the 2016 series against India due to a tear in his Acl (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) in the left knee, is excited about the prospect of playing against the Kl Rahul-led side.

Australian rugby player Daniel Vidot (above, left) has secured a developmental contract with WWE.
Posting a video on his Facebook page to confirm the news, the 25-year-old star who plays in Australia’s National Rugby League for the Brisbane Broncos, impressed WWE officials after completing a three-day tryout at Florida’s WWE Performance Centre.
Newspapers in his homeland claim WWE had been courting Vidot for over a year and were keen to secure the deal.
“Us scouts believe Vidot has the size, strength and Polynesian look to match Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, the WWE legend who has since become a Hollywood star.
Vidot claims he has signed a three-year deal with WWE but in what would appear to be an unusually structured deal, he will continue playing rugby for the next few years. He will first see out his current rugby contract with his team before...

You get two options when it comes to picking defenders for your fantasy football team. Option one (which I selected last season) is to fill it with plucky, affordable shot-blockers who can hopefully take penalty kicks or deliver an outrageously precise delivery into the box.
These guys aren’t going to make your team look pretty, they’re probably going to don the yellow of Norwich City or the black and red stripes of Bournemouth but the acquirement of these 4.0 million men can be crucial. Why? Well, you can now throw your fun tokens Jordan Belfort-style at the midfield. I’m talking the big boys, Eden Hazard, Alexis Sanchez and David Silva are now realistic purchases and all because you have got Michael Turner standing behind them.

Sunderland have their sights firmly set upon attacking talent with a trio of wingers led by Jeremain Lens being linked with moves to Wearside.
The Dutch international can play as a forward, though he is used to playing on the left side of a front three, ideal for Sunderland’s needs, and he is understood to be the closest target for Black Cats, though a fee is yet to be agreed upon.
Stade Rennais man Paul-Georges Ntep and England international Andros Townsend have also both been linked to the Black Cats, though they could be backup options if they fail to land Lens.
The 22-year-old Ntep is a highly-rated talent in France, and broke into the national team set up this year following a series of impressive performances. He fits the mould of what Advocaat is looking for as a left winger with pace and power.

Premier League strugglers Cardiff City will swap Nigeria forward Peter Odemwingie for Stoke City’s Trinidad and Tobago target man Kenwyne Jones.
BBC Sport reports the deal will go ahead when Jones, 29, completes a medical in the Welsh capital. Both he and Odemwingie, 32, are out of favour at their current clubs under new management.
Jones has played second fiddle at the Potters to Peter Crouch since Mark Hughes succeeded Tony Pulis. Odemwingie, a Bluebirds summer signing for Malky Mackay, is now surplus to requirements as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer swooped for Jo Inge Berget from former club Molde this week.
Stoke will take over the remainder of the two-year deal Odemwingie signed when he joined Cardiff. The length of Jones’s contract at the Bluebirds is not known at this stage. He refused to play for the Potters against Liverpool a fortnight ago and...

Everton will attempt to sign Stoke City striker Kenwyne Jones for a knockdown price of just £1 million.
Tuesday’s Guardian revealed Toffees manager Roberto Martinez has identified Trinidad and Tobago frontman Jones, 29, as a bargain basement replacement for Nikica Jelavic as the Croatian will join Hull City Tigers.
Jones has six months left on his contract at the Britannia Stadium. He has fallen out of favour under Potters boss Mark Hughes this season. Despite being prolific in cup competitions this term, Jones has scored just 13 Premier League goals since moving to the Britannia Stadium from Sunderland for £8 million in 2010.
Stoke bolstered their own attacking options with the permanent capture of Stephen Ireland from Aston Villa and the loan signing of Manchester City striker John Guidetti. Jones thus could be sold in the winter window to ensure he is not lost for nothing in the summer.
