CNBC has a new head of primetime programming: Denise Contis, who spent nearly a decade at Discovery.
Contis will have the title of Evp and Head of Content for Primetime. Christian Barcellos held the post on an interim basis and will stay on as Svp of Development & Production for the network’s primetime slate.
Contis will report to CNBC Chairman Mark Hoffman and report to the New York office on Tuesday. Hoffman informed the staff of the change in a memo on Monday. (Read it below.)
CNBC, whose daytime mission is to capture financial market movement as it happens, shifts gears in primetime. It has developed a small portfolio of unscripted shows connected with its overall business focus, both acquired staples like Shark Tank and originals like The Profit and the recently premiered Cash Pad.
Contis brings significant experience handling unscripted franchises. From 2008 to 2017, she held a range of positions at Discovery,...

The Real Housewives family has welcomed a new addition. Bravo has confirmed to EW that Completely Bare founder Cindy Barshop will be the newest cast member of the network’s hit The Real Housewives of New York. (The New York Post had the news first.) So what do we know about Barshop? At this point, the bare (heh) minimum: She runs the chain of day spas that focuses on waxing and laser hair removal, is a native of Long Island, and is a single mother of two twin girls named Zoe and Jesse who were born in 2009.

Back in September, we told you about Cindy Barshop. She owns a chain of day spas, and her claim to fame is introducing the world to sticking shiny stones around one's lady parts - better known as "vajazzling."
So, Bravo must think the holiday season is the ideal time to introduce the sparkly new replacement for Bethenny Frankel, because it has finally confirmed that Barshop is indeed the newest cast member of "The Real Housewives of New York City."
"She has an organic connection to the cast," Bravo programming VP Christian Barcellos tells the New York Post. "She's friends with Ramona [Singer] and has connections to Kelly [Bensimon]. They all run in the same circles."
Barshop is a single mother to young twin girls, who were born in 2009. She owns a chain of day spas in Manhattan, Scarsdale, N.Y., and Palm Beach, Fla. And she lives in a downtown loft in Manhattan's West Village.

One thing you don't get when John Travolta is your guest is a lot of glib patter. The film star -- who dazzled the moviegoing public in "Saturday Night Fever", went through a flat period in his career and then bounced back stronger than ever -- is featured in an engaging, watchable, two-hour special edition of Bravos' "Inside the Actors Studio", and he comes across as open, funny, sincere and likable.
Bravo's sale to NBC doesn't appear to have affected the simple, effective format of the interview program. The always remarkably prepared host, James Lipton, again has done his homework as he prompts Travolta to share details of his life and craft for an audience of apparently admiring acting students and friends of the guest.
As he enters the studio, Travolta kisses host Lipton on the cheek and quips: "If that doesn't make you happy, I don't know what will."
The star of "Welcome Back, Kotter", "Pulp Fiction" and the new release "Basic" shares that his family was extremely theatrical -- his three sisters and two brothers are actors.
In earlier days, Travolta said he endlessly showed off for his parents, whom he credited with providing him with an abundance of confidence. That ego-building didn't preclude a sense of humor. Travolta quotes his mother, after she viewed one of his endless performances: " 'Look at him, isn't he a borderline genius?' "
Travolta credits that confidence, and a determination to look at the upside of life, as having pulled him through difficult periods, including the decade or so when he wasn't being offered plum assignments.
It was his work in "Pulp Fiction" that helped pull him out of that slump. The role he eventually won originally was written specifically for Michael Madsen, but director Quentin Tarantino, after a meeting with Travolta, changed his mind and fought with the studio to cast Travolta in the part.
Travolta also shares what it was like to work on many of the hits in which he starred. He didn't think "Saturday Night Fever" was going to be a commercial success. "Disco was on the way out", he remarked, recalling that he had to dig in the back bins to find his disco outfits.
Friends, admirers and other icons are introduced from the audience, including Didi Conn ("Grease") and fabled actress Jeanne Moreau, making the show a mini "This Is Your Life".
Lipton delivers his "word association" quiz, brief questions to which Travolta responds ingenuously, including favorite things and turnoffs.
Travolta shows off his gift of mimicry, doing Nicolas Cage's talk and walk and impersonating Barbara Stanwyck and Marlon Brando.
The actor's Scientology background is briefly touched on, as is his career slump and passion for flying. Capping the special are Travolta and acting student Holly Ellis re-creating the Twist dance number from "Pulp Fiction".
"Inside the Actors Studio" remains a bastion where viewers can learn a lot more about performers than in the few sound bites of a standard talk show.
