Joe Walsh unleashed a raucous rendition of his 1978 solo hit "Life's Been Good" with Jon Batiste and Stay Human on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Wednesday.
Walsh sang the cheeky assessment of rock and roll excess with a grin on his face, punctuating a line like, "I lock the doors in case I'm attacked," with a smile. With Batiste and Stay Human as his back-up band, Walsh was free to run wild on guitar, literally scampering across The Late Show stage during the song's extended solo before trading riffs with a blazing saxophone.

The Daily Show crew circa 2005 reminisced about Stephen Colbert's last day as a correspondent in a sketch that featured Samantha Bee, Jon Stewart, Ed Helms, Rob Corddry and "Steve Carell," played by John Oliver. The skit opened The Late Show's episode-long Daily Show reunion.
"Just seeing those guys, it really takes me back. I can still remember my last day at The Daily Show like it was yesterday," Colbert said. "I can't put it into words but I can put it into flashback."

Earlier this week, CBS announced that former One Direction member — and latest addition to the Christopher Nolan Players — Harry Styles is slated for a week-long residency on “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” For four consecutive nights, starting on May 15, Styles will serve as the resident musical artist.
With that “Dunkirk” appearance on the horizon and a solo music career still in its early stages, you could do worse than Styles when picking someone to hand the keys to an entire week’s worth of late night. And having been through the process of a breakneck sketch show schedule, he’ll probably be a capable comedy sidekick for Corden.
But what if this residency is a smashing success? Which other bands and artists would be ripe for tenures of their own on the other major daily late-night shows?
Jon Batiste and Stay Human hold down the fort for “The Late Show.

Stephen Colbert introduced a new segment on The Late Show on Monday night titled "Lyrics We Can Afford to Songs We Love." In the first installment, Green Day sang "Camptown Races" – written by the 19th century American songwriter Stephen Foster, and thus freely available in the public domain – over their 1997 hit, "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)."
Green Day performed the song acoustically in the dressing room, with Billie Joe Armstrong strumming a guitar and Late Show bandleader Jon Batiste accompanying him. Colbert and Armstrong traded lead vocals, while Mike Dirnt...

Jimmy Fallon parodied President Trump's bizarre solo press conference with the cold-open of Thursday's Tonight Show. The comedian, decked out in his traditional orange make-up, hosted his own event, poking fun at the president's rambling statements and confrontations with reporters.
"First of all, you're all fake news," Fallon said to open the bit. "I hate you very much. And thank you for being here. Next." Later, he vowed to make Beyoncé Secretary of Labor because of her pregnancy expertise, used a tiny hand prop to drink a glass of water...

Jon Stewart returned to The Late Show on Tuesday, joining former Comedy Central pal Stephen Colbert to catch up on all things Donald Trump.

Stewart, who previously turned up donning an outlandish wig and Cheeto dust on his face to represent Trump back in December 2015, this time came out draped in an oversized tie with a dead rodent on his head.

The Late Show's Stephen Colbert and Jon Batiste partner with Ziggy Marley and Chance the Rapper to recreate the Arthur theme in a new video.
The web-only exclusive sprouted out of a conversation Colbert and his bandleader have about their mutual love of the PBS animated series. "Most people don't know Ziggy Marley wrote and performed the theme song, so it's always gonna be hot. Even Chance the Rapper covered it," Batiste told Colbert.

Stephen Colbert enlisted Norah Jones and Jon Batiste to help him debut a maddening, so-bad-it's-good holiday tune titled "Christmas Is Now" on The Late Show Monday.
As Colbert explained, the song was written to bump Paul McCartney and Wings' "Wonderful Christmas Time" from the top spot of "worst Christmas songs of all time." True to his promise, Colbert, in an ugly knit sweater, began beating the song into ears, brains and hearts everywhere as he harmonized with Batiste, "Christmas is now, Christmas is now/ Now it is Christmas and Christmas is now.

Stephen Colbert’s production team lives for live.
The long presidential election season may finally be coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean “The Late Show” host is taking a breather on hosting live broadcasts. Executive producer Chris Licht told IndieWire that Colbert’s late night chatfest will continue to go live when warranted.
“It is such a shot of energy when we do it,” Licht said. “It’s really hard but everyone loves doing it. I would say the bar is really low to go live. Because the machine is in place to do it.”
That “Late Show” machinery is in full gear this week, as Colbert and company are airing live shows on CBS this Monday and Wednesday, in addition to the live Election night Showtime special “Stephen Colbert’s Live Election Night Democracy’s Series Finale: Who’s Going to Clean Up This Sh*t?...

“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” executive producer Chris Licht admits he’s “about to collapse” – but that’s a good thing.
Licht says he’s “energized and exhausted at the same time” as “The Late Show” concludes two weeks of live broadcasts timed to the Republican and Democratic conventions. By all accounts, it’s been a success: Critics, some of whom had expressed disappointment with Colbert’s transition from Comedy Central to CBS, are raving about the shows.
And inside “The Late Show,” Licht says, “there’s a nice energy amongst Stephen and the staff. Especially Stephen, who doesn’t read press, he’s getting pure enjoyment out of the shows we’re doing.”

The Republican National Convention Circus came to town last week and they made the big clown their ringmaster.
As you might guess, I am not a supporter of Donald Trump. Evidently neither is Senator Ted Cruz, who declined to get behind the party’s nominee during a nationally televised prime time speech at the Republican National Convention. That was interesting.
ComicMix is about pop culture and you certainly can examine the Rnc from that perspective. It was entertaining, in a sick way, and had more than a few surprises. It was like a Big League version of a reality show… and Trump knows about reality shows, believe me.
However, I think that the best thing coming out of the Rnc was the return of Jon Stewart. He appeared at least twice on his old buddy Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show (I’m writing this before Friday night’s show...

On Monday night’s “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert resurrected the fan-favorite “Colbert Report” character, just in time to kick off the Republican National Convention. The real Colbert seemed flabbergasted and was unable to explain the success of Trump’s campaign, so he decided to track down his buddy, Jon Stewart, for some advice. He found the former “Daily Show” host living in isolation in the woods, and told him about the news that Trump is the nominee.
“Jon, listen, I know that you and your beard are very busy these days, but I’m here to tell you it’s the Republican National Convention this week,” he said to Stewart as explained the Trump situation.
Shocked by the news, Stewart replied, “The guy from ‘The Apprentice?’…The guy who filed for bankruptcy in 1991…and 2009?” Then behind Stewart the “Colbert”-version of Stephen appeared holding his signature Captain America shield,...

Jon Stewart stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday to deliver a very important message about the now-expired Zadroga Act. But his delivery was a bit "boring!"

Ed Sheeran and Bill Withers joined Stephen Colbert on The Late Show to promote an upcoming Carnegie Hall tribute and charity concert in Withers' honor that will benefit the Stuttering Association for the Young — something both musicians suffered from as children.
Sheeran did most of the talking, admitting he still stutters occasionally and noting the impediment arose after doctors forgot to apply an anesthetic while removing a birthmark around his eye. On top of that, Sheeran said he used to wear massive National Health Service-issued eyeglasses and has no eardrum in one ear.

Real comedy still happens on late night, we can prove it. If you like Conan comedy gold, Fallon friendliness, cutesy Corden, kneedy Kimmel, and all the rest, I hope you’ll enjoy this column too.
The muddled on-again off-again summer schedule of late night shows continues, and last week Kimmel sat out again. There was still a lot to talk about, though. First, Jon Stewart, intrepid and incredible host of The Daily Show for sixteen years, retired. We’ll take a look at some of the interesting content The Daily Show has made for his exit. Other than that, John Oliver delivered an incisive and pointed report on sexual education in Us schools, Don Rickles told Jimmy what’s what, and Conan had a lark with a TV-ma rating. Plus, more from the already-amazing The Late Show with (starring) Stephen Colbert.

Jon Stewart did not say goodbye on his emotional final episode of "The Daily Show," he just said he was going out for a drink. But how many people tuned in to see his emotional #JonVoyage after 16 years on Comedy Central?
According to Deadline, last night's August 6 finale was watched by 3.5 million viewers, with 1.8 million in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demo. That made it the second most-watched "Daily Show" episode after the 3.6 million who tuned in for a visit from then-presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama on October 28, 2008. The numbers are close, though, and 3.5 million for Jon's farewell is up from the 2.5 million for "The Colbert Report" finale last year. That was the Stephen Colbert show's largest audience.

It’s happening so fast! One minute Stephen Colbert has a beard and looks like a rumpled college professor on an extended sabbatical, the next he’s clean-shaven and announcing the new bandleader for The Late Show. Jon Batiste, the slick 28-year-old jazz man from Louisiana, will be this generation’s Paul Shaffer, but with hair and more sensible fashion choices. Here are five things to know about him.1. He was born in the Crescent City into a big musical family. The Batistes have a long musical history in New Orleans. At one point, a popular arts academy in the city bore the family's name. Many of Jon's uncles and cousins are also musicians, including jazz composer Paul Batiste, who in 2013 famously brought a hefty lawsuit against Rick Ross and T-Pain for illegally sampling his music. So, it only makes sense that Jon got his first taste of music...

After seventeen years in the position, "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart is stepping down from the Comedy Central late night political satire series. Stewart’s current contract ends this Fall and he is expected to stay until that time.
Stewart's departure follows on from that of Stephen Colbert, the former 'Daily Show' correspondent turned "The Colbert Report" host who wrapped that show's run in December. Colbert is now slated to take over as host of David Letterman's "The Late Show" when he retires later this year.
Comedy Central executives have quietly been planning for Stewart's exit, but unlike "The Colbert Report" it's expected "The Daily Show" will continue on with someone else in the big seat. Craig Kilborn served as host for the first three years of the show with Stewart taking over in 1999.

Stewart has been behind the chair on The Daily Show for the past 12 years with the show’s success spawning off spin-off comedy talk shows from Stephen Colbert, Larry Wilmore, and John Oliver. Now, the replacement for Stewart is in question with Colbert heading to CBS to take over The Late Show for David Letterman, Wilmore just starting his own show, and Oliver’s Last Week Tonight doing well over at HBO.

CBS announced its fall schedule which is both a big shake-up and a return to CBS’ conservative scheduling. The network is moving away from serialized shows like Hostages but every night’s line-up will be changed. Probably the biggest move is dropping the two-hour comedy block on Mondays. The last time CBS aired a drama on Monday it was Scarecrow & Mrs. King in 1986.
CBS joined the networks promising year-round programming, noting that one of the season’s biggest new dramas was the summer show Under the Dome. There’s a good number of new and returning shows not on CBS’ announced schedule, they’ll be used to limit the number of repeats throughout the year.
At least Under the Dome had Mike Vogel to look at.

It’s finally official, creator Dan Harmon will return to manage the fifth season of Community.
In talking with Vulture Guillermo Diaz says the cast of Scandal doesn’t take their show’s twists and turns any better than the audience does, “We’re constantly like, ‘Oh my God! This is really happening!’ We all look at each other, and we all look at (Scandal producer) Shonda (Rhimes), and she’s like, ‘Yep.’ She kind of shrugs like, Yeah. I know.”
Don’t worry, Diaz also discuses Huck‘s wig.
Fox has picked a new producer for American Idol, hiring a producer who recently managed the Swedish version of Idol.
Blergh indeed:

Eva Mendes embraced the warmer NYC temperatures in a white dress on her way into The Daily Show With Jon Stewart yesterday. She made an outfit change into a short, pink embellished number for the interview. Eva promoted her latest movie, The Place Beyond the Pines, on the show and joked with Jon about the woes of her early acting career. Eva's stop on The Daily Show is just her latest on a busy press tour for her new film, which gets a limited release in the Us tomorrow. Last week, Eva made an appearance on the Late Show With David Letterman to chat about the movie, and earlier this month...
