When Skinwalkers arrived to review, I was confused. I remember Skinwalkers being a fairly good movie about werewolves, where this was not it. Doing a bit of research (looked on IMDb) I discovered that this is in fact Skinwalker Ranch a “based on true events” found footage/documentary style tale of alien abduction. That confusion over I was intrigued to see where this one would go.
In an event that “shocked the paranormal community around the world” a ten year old boy goes missing while playing baseball on his father’s ranch. Years after, his father still lives there searching for signs of his son. When a scientific team arrive to investigate the disappearance and strange events that take place on the ranch,...

With Skinwalker Ranch recently being released to VOD, we invited director Devin McGinn to take part in our latest Q&A feature. Devin tells us about his interest in the paranormal, why he decided to take on the Skinwalker Ranch, and his experience making the movie:
Have you always been interested in the paranormal? Are you a firm believer in aliens and ghosts or are you more of a skeptic?
I have indeed always been interested in the paranormal. I would not proclaim to know if any of these things absolutely exist, but I can tell you I had a very strange and unfounded fear of alien abduction at a young age. Hopefully it was just my overactive imagination. I also had a very real fear of flesh eating slime and that certainly is not a reality. Right?
But yeah, I was always interested in that kind of thing. Monsters,...

Watch a couple of new clips from David McGinn's Skinwalker Ranch starring Jon Gries, Kyle Davis, Erin Cahill, Devin McGinn, Matthew Rocheleau and Steve Berg. The film opens in theaters, and also finds VOD on October 30th. In 2010 “Skinwalker Ranch” gained media attention after experiencing a wide range of unexplained phenomena. Reports ranged from UFO sightings to livestock mutilation, but maybe most notable was the disappearance of ranch owner Hoyt Miller’s eight year old son, Cody on November 11, 2010. Close to a year later, Modern Defense Enterprises (Mde) has sent a team of experts to document and investigates the mysterious occurrences, which only escalate upon their arrival.

We are happy to debut the red-band trailer for the awesome-looking supernatural thriller, Skinwalker Ranch! For those of you not familiar with the film yet, it was inspired by an actual location in Utah known for its unexplained paranormal phenomena. I'm not the biggest fan of found footage films, but this one looks like it will deliver some intense entertainment.
I'm very familiar with Skinwalker Ranch, and I've heard and read a lot of stories about the location over the years. I was wondering when someone would actually get around to making a film based on it, and here it is! I've mentioned before that my brother actually snuck onto the grounds and saw some pretty crazy stuff. It's definitely a good setting for a movie, and some great concepts were used in this movie.

When did Found Footage horror movies start getting fancy production values? Because it sure looks like director Devin McGinn’s “Skinwalker Ranch” is a snazzy pretty little number with some very decent visuals up its sleeve. Heck, it’s even got a star in Jon Gries, who you may recall as the “tall, skinny, and twitchy guy” in a variety of TV shows over the years. That’s a first, too. I’m not the biggest fan of Found Footage, but when they’re this slick looking, I can probably make an exception. “Skinwalker Ranch” is supposedly “based on a true story”, which is to say, a bunch of kooks claim this has happened to them. Too bad they didn’t have all the fancy recording whatchamacallits of the characters in the movie. I've been fascinated by this Skinwalker Ranch since I first heard about it a few years ago. It's an actual place in Utah that is known for having a ton of paranormal activity. It was only a matter of time before someone was inspired to make a movie about it. The stuff I've heard about the place is a lot more interesting than this film will end up being, though. My brother and some friends actually snuck onto the property at one point and saw a few crazy things of their own.
The movie was made in the found footage style, and it's based on a few of the legends from the area. Today we have a poster, clip, and some viral videos talking about Skinwalker Ranch and what it is.

Close to a year later, Modern Defense Enterprises (Mde) has sent a team of experts to document and investigates the mysterious occurrences, which only escalate upon their arrival. The incidents become more violent, causing tensions to rise as the team must decide how far they will go to unlock the mysteries of “Skinwalker Ranch.” The group debates whether the answers are worth risking their lives for, or if they should just call off the investigation and leave the ranch – that is, if leaving is actually an option…...

H. P. Lovecraft was no fan of the cinema.
In a 1933 letter to poet Richard Morse (quoted in the book Lurker in the Lobby: A Guide to the Cinema of H. P. Lovecraft), he wrote:
"I shall never permit anything bearing my signature to be banalised and vulgarised into the flat, infantile twaddle which passes for 'horror tales' amongst radio and cinema audiences."
One can only imagine the venom that would have flowed from Lovecraft's pen had he seen The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu. Writer/actor/producer Devin McGinn's heart was in the right place, but this attempt to merge Lovecraftian horror with Shaun of the Dead humor fails miserably.
The film opens with Cthulhu cultists finding one part of the key that will open the gates of R'lyeh.

As many of you know from reading our site and listening to our podcast, we are pretty big H.P. Lovecraft fans. Fans to the point we will check out anything and everything that is influenced by his stories or are as close to an adaptation as you can get. So when news came around that there was a comedic horror film coming out that was influenced by Mr. Lovecraft, our interest was definitely through the roof. Considering films from Re-Animator to Hellboy mix a bit of comedy into the horror, which is usually what Lovecraft did within his tales, it seemed like the most logical step into making a film. But does it work?
The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu tells the story of Jeff (Kyle Davis), an office worker who just wants to live a normal life and his friend Charlie (Devin McGinn) who is always getting him in trouble.

I could not be more excited to see this film, the final product of a project that nerds who appreciate Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been hearing about for years. On purpose I’ve been trying to avoid anything and everything about this movie but it’s been hard because it has been everywhere. An alien, Comic-Con, a road trip, Jason Bateman, the laundry list of good things brewing within this movie’s run time is just scrumptious.
So, if you live in the Phoenix area and can make it to a screening on March 15 then send me your name to Christopher_Stipp@yahoo.com and I’ll get you entered to win a pair of passes to see this before everyone else.

Director: Henry Saine
Writer: Devin McGinn
Silently released to DVD on Feb 15th in North America (and soon to come on April 4 in the UK) is The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu. This horror-comedy is a welcome change, when compared to previous attempts at re-igniting popular culture’s fascination with H.P. Lovecraft's seminal works.
If there’s ever a definitive appropriate nod of approval, it's found in the opening slate that sets the tone for this film: The world is indeed comic, but the joke is on mankind.
With this release are the usual extras. There is a director’s commentary, an extended scene and a gallery of on-set photos to enjoy. The commentary on the extended scene provides some insight to why one version was used over another and with this scene are storyboards. They replace scenes of potential carnage, if the budget allowed it. Had this production found some additional investors,...

H.P. Lovecraft cinema has typically been a province of gruesome terror and straight-faced representation of the mythos—the wildly black-comic Re-animator being the notable exception. Taking the opposite tack is The Last Lovecraft: Relic Of Cthulhu (just out on DVD from Dark Sky Films), which applies a lighter touch to its story of three misfits trying to keep a talisman out of the hands of demons that can use it to unleash their ancient gods upon the Earth. The movie is the brainchild of Devin McGinn, an actor with several TV credits who wrote, co-produced and co-stars, and discussed with Fango the challenges of wearing so many hats and satirizing classic material beloved by myriad fans.

Following last evening’s raucous Cinefamily La premiere of director Henry Saine’s wickedly funny horror-comedy The Last Lovecraft: The Relic of Cthulhu, the director, along with the feature film’s screenwriter, producer and actor Devin McGinn and cast members Kyle Davis, Barak Hardley and Gregg Lawrence, among others, assembled for an audience Q&A to chat about the film.
Hosted by Devin Feraci at The Silent Movie Theatre, the filmmakers took time to wax about the project, which was shot over the course of twenty-one days in thirteen locations for the relatively low budget of $170,000 (astonishing, given the quality of the finished flick, which is sure to more than please fans of its similar brethren, the laugh-out-loud flicks Shaun of the Dead and Tucker and Dale vs. Evil).

The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu, a horror comedy directed by Henry Saine and starring Kyle Davis, Devin McGinn, Matt Bauer, Honor Bliss and Sujata Day, arrives to DVD on February 15, 2011.
A desk jockey becomes a slayer of aquatic demons in this blend of horror, fantasy and comedy from director Henry Saine. Jeff (Kyle Davis) is a regular guy with a dull job in an office complex who is certain there's nothing remarkable about himself. But Jeff learns he's wrong when he's approached by an eccentric old man and told he's surviving relative of the great horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. That might seem interesting in itself, but there's more -- Jeff is informed Lovecraft's tales of terror weren't entirely fictional, and the Cthulhu, the evil fish-like humanoids that figured in so many of his stories, are real and poised to emerge from the sea and take over the world. [Because Toronto's week of genre and cult mayhem, The Toronto After Dark Film Festival (Tadff) is kicking off today, we are re-running Todd's Slamdance review of The Last Lovecraft: Call of Cthulu. Where the Park City sub-festival was also the launching point of Canadian creature feature throwback Jack Brooks Monster Slayer a couple years ago and that film seems a fair comparison. While Brooks may have had a bit more polish to it Lovecraft has more heart by far.]
The Great Old Ones Are coming. They are fishy. They are ruthless. They are hungry. And they very definitely are not just a figment of horror icon H.P. Lovecraft's imagination.
When the ancient cult of prehistoric god Cthulu discover an ancient artifact buried in the sands of Egypt it could very well spark the end of humanity. Should the cult succeed in combining their artifact with one guarded by an ancient secret society devoted to fighting the followers of Cthulu ... well, let's just say the end would come swift and painful.
Humanity's only hope? Jeff. The socially awkward office worker may be completely unaware that he is the last living descendant of H.P. Lovecraft but that simple fact means that he alone is immune to the powers of Cthulu and the Great Old Ones and that he alone can succeed in protecting the artifact from Cthulu's horrific undersea minions.

It took a while, but one of this year's Slamdance films, director Henry Saine's horror comedy The Last Lovecraft: The Relic of Cthulhu, has found distributors for both North America via Mpi Media Group's Dark Sky Films and internationally via Cinemavault.
The deal went down during the Efm in Berlin, and Mpi plans an autumn theatrical release through its Dark Sky Films label followed by DVD and VOD in October. Kyle Davis, Devin McGinn, and Barak Hardley star; and McGinn wrote and produced.
“Both Mpi and Cinemavault have proven time and again to be the ideal distributors for daring and independent movies, and we’re proud that The Last Lovecraft: Relic Of Cthulhu will join their formidable line-up of films,” said Nate Bolotin of Xyz Films on behalf of Outlaw Films.
Synopsis
"Jeff, a down on his luck office worker, finds out he is the last living relative of horror novelist H.P. Lovecraft.
