"Being free, and being married - a contradiction." IFC Films has debuted a trailer for a British martial indie drama titled The Escape, from writer/director Dominic Savage (Love + Hate). This empowering indie first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. Gemma Arterton stars as an "ordinary woman" who "makes an extraordinary decision which will change her life forever." She plays a married woman in the middle of a challenging marriage on the verge of ending, who decides to go her own way. Dominic Cooper co-stars, with a main cast including Frances Barber, Marthe Keller, Montserrat Lombard, and Jalil Lespert. This looks quite impressive, with what seems to be an exceptional lead performance by Arterton in a very complex and compelling turn as this unhappy woman, looking for an "escape". See the trailer below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Dominic Savage's The Escape, direct from YouTube:...

Inefficiency. It’s a criticism often levelled at the BBC by a certain species of rapacious vulture who sees the corporation not as the lustrous national gem it is, but as an unjust barrier to the extent to which they’re able to feather their own nests. The BBC is full of waste, they caw. The BBC must be more efficient!
If any of the vultures had the nous to watch BBC Two at 10pm on a Tuesday night for the past few weeks, they’d have been delighted. Well, not delighted.

We take a spoiler-free look at Sky Arts' terrific quartet of Neil Gaiman short stories, starting on Thursday the 26th at 9pm...
Neil Gaiman's success gives me faith in the world. He's a great writer, and he's well known because of that fact. I think it springs from the particular way he has of looking at humanity, and passing along his insights to us - with wit, warmth, and not a small bath of uncomfortable self-realisation topped with the occasional cold shower of fear. If that sounds like a lot for a writer to accomplish, well, that's why he's so good, and why he should be able to make a living with his words. The fact that he does makes me feel better about us all.
The big challenge of Likely Stories, therefore, is to capture Gaiman's appeal and put it across without losing any one of those elements.

Well, now, this is a pleasant surprise. Even had I known that UK actress Montserrat Lombard - a great favorite in these parts for her comedy work as well as dramas such as Ashes To Ashes - I would never has expected something like White to be the outcome. And sometimes it's a good thing, indeed, to be surprised. Lombard has teamed up with fellow UK actor Sean Harris (Prometheus, Southcliffe, soon to be in MacBeth) to create the short, which they describe as a fairly tale for adults informed by films such as Badlands, Paris, Texas and early David Lynch. The duo are just under a third of the way to their sixteen thousand pound goal with just a few days left and if...

Arriving in cinemas and on demand today, Mark Simon Hewis’ 8 Minutes Idle promises to be a charming comedy perfectly timed for the Valentine’s festivities over the weekend, with an element of office romance thrown in for good measure.
Following the rather brilliant first trailer we saw last month, we’ve now got an exclusive new clip from the film to share in tandem with its release, teasing a little of the comedy we can expect. Antonia Thomas’ retorts, in particular, are just genius.
8 Minutes Idle is a contemporary comedy adapted from the award‐winning novel by Bristol author Matt Thorne. This is the story of Dan, early 20s, who gets kicked out of his home by his mother and not knowing who to turn to ends up packing up his most prized possessions and his cat and moves into his office, a Call Centre.

As part of an initiative called iFeatures, where three movies were made on modest-sized budgets in Bristol, England, 8 Minutes Idle is the final of the trio of films (Flying Blind and In the Dark Half being the other too) to finally make its way to cinemas. Though director Mark Simon Hewis’ debut production had hit a snag when the film’s initial distributor went bust – fortunately cash raised by members of the British public and celebrities such as Stephen Merchant and Dom Joly, have ensured this film will get a theatrical release after all – and given the creativity and jocular charm to this low-budget piece, that can only be a good thing.
Based on the novel by Matt Thorne, we delve into the idle existence of Dan (Tom Hughes) – a twenty-something who spends his days working in a call centre, and his evenings contending with a dysfunctional and erratic mother,...

This post will be chock-full of spoilers, and is meant as a discussion post, rather than a review. Suffice to say, if you like sci-fi, the metaphysical, and procedurals grounded in humanity, as well as brilliant characters and unbelievably strong actors, then give "Ashes to Ashes" a shot, but not before watching the original British series, "Life on Mars." It'll be infinitely frustrating at times, but it's worth the payoff.

I've mentioned a few times on the site how disappointed I was in the British series, "Life on Mars." It was a good procedural built with wonderful characters, with a particular nod to John Simm and, especially, Phillip Glenister, and I did like most of the episodes individually. But I thought the end was a complete cop-out. Essentially, the people behind the series created a complex mystery about why Sam Tyler was stuck in 1972 only, in the end, to give...

Montserrat Lombard has admitted that she was concerned about how people would react to the Ashes To Ashes finale. Lombard, who played Shaz, told Female First that she was surprised when she found out how the series would end. BBC America was originally meant to air Season Two of genre-busting drama series Ashes to Ashes last May, following their run of the first season of the Life on Mars sequel series starring Keely Hawes, Philip Glenister, Dean Andrews, Marshall Lancaster, and Montserrat Lombard. Unfortunately, things didn't quite turn out that way. A year later, BBC America is finally bringing Season Two of Ashes to Ashes to American shores, with the first episode slated to air tonight at 10 pm Et/Pt. (It's also the perfect jumping-on point for viewers who may not have seen the first season.) Thanks to a region-free DVD player and a friend in the UK, I've been writing up episodes of Ashes's phenomenally mind-bending third season on a weekly basis over the last few weeks (the series is set to end its three-season run next week in the UK), but I wanted to resurrect my review...

Looks like Ray finally got his heart. In the shared stories of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes, Di Ray Carling (Dean Andrews) has been a stalwart member of Gene Hunt's team but never the focus of any particular storyline. That decision has granted Ray the illusion of being what he appears on the surface: a misogynistic lackey who is all too willing to follow Gene's instructions and make trouble for Sam Tyler or Alex Drake. But this week's fantastic episode of BBC One's Ashes to Ashes, written by Julie Rutterford and directed by Alrick Riley, shaded in Ray's backstory, rendering a tragic air to his character that was both emotionally wrenching and wholly unexpected. Thoughout the five seasons that comprise Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes, Ray hasn't been the type of character who openly discusses his feelings or his past, yet this week's installment featured a...

"It's a god-awful small affair/To the girl with the mousy hair." David Bowie's seminal song "Life on Mars" may have provided the musical hook to 1970s set metaphysical cop drama Life on Mars but its presence had until this point been limited to that series and not crossing over into sequel spinoff Ashes to Ashes. Until now, that is. The song--along with Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl"--offered two of many memorable moments in the latest fantastic installment of Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharoah's Ashes to Ashes, a mind-bending installment that offered some additional clues to the identity of Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) and his war with Jim Keats (Daniel Mays) as well as the circumstances surrounding the death of Life on Mars' Sam Tyler (John Simm) and the presence of Alex (Keeley Hawes) in this strange world. Television Rating: 5.0/5.0 Chicago – “Ashes to Ashes” may be one of the most unusual choices for a TV sequel but sometimes the best series come from the most unexpected places. This may be the most pleasant surprise TV fans will get all year. The BBC’s brilliant “Life on Mars” has been dragged from the glitz and glamour of the ’70s to the turbulent ’80s in the as-good-and-arguably-better “Ashes to Ashes,” another notch in the belt of great BBC programming.
