A trans-American rail journey, picking up musicians en route, forms the basis for an engaging sound and light show
In 2013, artist Doug Aitken’s “kinetic light sculpture” (a train with brilliantly illuminated side panels) travelled from New York to San Francisco, stopping at 10 stations, picking up artists and musicians en route. This film, comprising 62 minute-long-shorts, provides an engaging snapshot of the project, blending footage of “happenings” with on-board conversations and performances. Highlights include the Black Monks of Mississippi and the Kansas City Marching Cobras raising the roof, Beck leading a gospel choir in the Mojave desert, Savages breathing new life into the spirit of post-punk, Giorgio Moroder musing on the creation of electro-funk, and Mavis Staples sending a shiver up our spines. Inevitably, some segments are more engaging than others, but the fleeting collage moves so fast that we’re always hurrying on to the next beat, the next station.

At around 8 p.m. at Union Station in Los Angeles, artist Doug Aitken stood on tiptoes, inspecting through a camera lens indie-rock artist Dan Deacon’s spasmodic set. Under the cavernous Art Deco ceilings of the old ticket lobby, audience members who’d downloaded Deacon’s app held their phones up in a glowing syncopated throb. “I’ve never tried this before in a train station,” Deacon quipped. The happening in Los Angeles marks the next-to-last stop on Aitken’s Station to Station, a multi-city art project by railway, which sees a variety of artist-travelers sheltered in a

It'll feel cooler around Liverpool later this month, and that's not just the weather. The seventh Liverpool Biennial will open with actress Tilda Swinton and musician Jack White, of The White Stripes, considering their art on a screen in Albert Dock. They are appearing in a new film called The Source, by Californian artist Doug Aitken. His aesthetically slick films have featured Hollywood's more cerebral stars: Chloë Sevigny, Donald Sutherland and Werner Herzog.

Kanye West's latest project comes in the form of his short film "Cruel Summer," which the rapper produced, wrote and directed. He premiered the experimental 30-minute flick in Cannes during the city's famous film festival, providing the audience with a unique experience. Instead of watching the film on one large screen, viewers watched it on seven separate displays, which sometimes showed different angles of each shot at once.
The movie centers on Kid Cudi, who plays a car thief who falls head over heels for a blind Arabian princess. And while the story entertained those in attendance, critics agree that the film's spectacle and music are what hooked audiences.

Beck once again proved his talent as a multifaceted musician by covering "I Only Have Eyes for You" by the Flamingos.
The track is gorgeous and a true dedication to the 1959 doo wop original. There is a hint of lo-fi with washed out vocals and instrumentals, akin to the recording techniques back in the day.
The cover is a part of multimedia artist Doug Aitken's "Song 1" light installation project at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C. Along with Beck, artists like Devendra Banhart and James Murphy took a spin at "I Only Have Eyes for You" for the project as well.
Beck seems to be in cover-mode lately. Today, his rendition of the 1928 song "Corrina, Corrina," for Christy Turlington's collaboration album with Every Mother Counts, was also released.

The Sundance Film Festival is the largest independent cinema festival in the United States. Held in January in Park City, Salt Lake City, the festival is a showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers. The Festival has changed over the decades from a low-profile venue for small-budget, independent creators from outside the Hollywood system to a media extravaganza for Hollywood celebrity actors, paparazzi, and luxury lounges set up by companies that are not affiliated with Sundance.
Now the festival is getting ready for the 2012 edition and today they announced the jury members for this year’s Festival. They include Shari Berman, Scott Burns, Charles Ferguson, Nick Fraser, Mike Judge, Justin Lin, Anthony Mackie, Cliff Martinez, Julia Ormond, Dee Rees and Lynn Shelton.

John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “The fact that most of the Premieres have been produced completely independently further underscores the resourcefulness and tenacity of filmmakers in this climate. Yesterday The Sundance Film Festival released their list of In-Competition films, today they have released their line-up of Non-Competition films. Robert Redford, Founder and President of Sundance Institute remarked, “We are, and always have been, a festival about the filmmakers. So what are they doing? What are they saying? They are making statements about the changing world we are living in. Some are straight-forward, some novel and some offbeat but always interesting. One can never predict. We know only at the end, and I love that.”
John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “In these challenging economic times, filmmakers have had to be more resourceful and truly independent in their approaches to filmmaking.

It seems like we are only just diving into the awards season, but the 2012 film year is right around the corner. There is no better place to get a tast of what is to come than Park City Utah in late January. We’ll be attending the fest again (read last year’s round-up) and today we have the first competition titles. This is the same group from last year which titles include Martha Marcy May Marlene, Like Crazy, Another Earth, Pariah, Being Elmo, Take Shelter and many more. Are there more great films to be found this year? I have no doubt the line-up below will include break-out titles, so lets get to it.
At first glance, the most notable film is Antonio Campos’ Simon Killer, who last directed Afterschool and is in the Martha Marcy trio. It is easily my most-anticipated from this group, along with Quentin Dupieux‘s Rubber follow-up Wrong.

The Sundance Institute announced the award winners for the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Like Crazy ended up winning the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize, and Circumstance won the dramatic audience award. I thought Like Crazy was a good film, but it definitely was not one of my favorites or one of the best movie there. I didn't end up getting to see Circumstance.

The Sundance Institute announced today that Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, the filmmakers behind the 2004 Sundance sensation Open Water, will return to the Sundance Film Festival with their next feature film -- Silent House will have its world premiere in the out-of-competition Park City at Midnight section. The movie, directed by Kentis and Lau based on a screenplay by Lau, is described as "A hauntingly choreographed descent into madness based on the Uruguayan film La Casa Muda." This "enthralling psychological thriller" is "impressively captured with a continuous camera shot." You might recall that I wrote about a film at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, Gustavo Hernández's "The Slient House" which was a haunted house horror film which took place all within one 79-minute continous shot (read my review here ). This movie is an American remake of that film (note: the iamge above is from the original movie). Read the full press release after the jump.

I'm adding the make-up of the Venice Film Festival Horizons sidebar selections a little late to the site, I'm mostly curious to see the low ratio of films that'll be picked up from this section for the upcoming Tiff announcements. Deemed as re-branding of the section, a more eclectic melange of titles mixing short, medium length pics, documentaries film and feature length items, of the items that will generate the most interest are the opening and closing titles which were revealed the week before, but we should see media coverage mentions on Paul Morrissey's News From Nowhere, Jose Luis Guerin's docu Guest (I've yet to see 2007/2008's In the City of Sylvia) and Sion Sono's Cold Fish and short film offerings from Guillermo Arriaga, Isaac Julien and Clara Law. Horizons: Feature-length Works "Sleeping Beauty," Catherine Breillat (France, opener) "Oki's Movie," Hong Sang-soo (South Korea, closer) "The Nine Muses,...
