Europe hasn’t gone Hollywood quite yet, but it’s getting there, slowly. The standing of the writer within the hierarchy of drama production in Europe has never been higher, but the Hollywood showrunner model, in its purest sense — in which the writer often has the final say in all creative decisions — is still a relative rarity in Europe.
Eight years ago, British exec producer Stephen Garrett, whose credits include “The Night Manager” and is now working on “The Rook” for Starz, persuaded American showrunner Frank Spotnitz to move to Europe and transplant the Hollywood showrunner model in the shape of BBC thriller series “Hunted.” Spotnitz, who brings “Medici: The Magnificent” to Mipcom, recalls one BBC exec telling him British writers were “categorically not capable of collaborating in a [writers’] room.”
Spotnitz proved that exec wrong, but admits that he has adapted the U.S. model to suit European conditions. The...

FX drama Trust is heading to the BBC in the UK after Sky dropped the Donald Sutherland-fronted U.S. acquisition ahead of its debut.
The British public broadcaster is to air the series, which tells the story of the true-life kidnapping of the heir to billionaire John Paul Getty, later this year after striking a deal with Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution. It comes after pay-tv broadcaster Sky, which announced earlier this year that it had picked up the ten-part series, came to an agreement with the Hollywood studio’s distribution division not to air it in the UK and Germany.
Inspired by actual events, Trust delves into the trials and triumphs of one of America’s wealthiest and unhappiest families, the Gettys. The series begins in 1973 with the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, an heir to the Getty oil fortune, by the Italian mafia in Rome. Donald...

The BBC has acquired “Trust,” Danny Boyle’s FX drama based on the true-life kidnapping of the heir to billionaire John Paul Getty, one of the world’s wealthiest businessmen.
Donald Sutherland (“The Hunger Games”) plays John Paul Getty, Sr., the oil tycoon, art collector and head of the Getty family. Hilary Swank (“Million Dollar Baby”), Brendan Fraser (“The Mummy”), and Harris Dickinson (Beach Rats) also star in the series, which tackles the same topic as Ridley Scott’s recent film, “All the Money in the World.”
“Trust” opens in 1973 with the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III (Dickinson), known as Paul, in Rome. The Getty fortune heir’s captors bank on a multimillion-dollar ransom, but back in England, Paul’s wealthy grandfather refuses to pay up. With Paul’s father (Michael Esper) lost in a drug-induced daze, it is left to Paul’s mother, the penniless Gail Getty (Swank...

This saga about the Getty family, led by billionaire patriarch J. Fair warning to Christopher Plummer, or any future actor who might try to take on the role of J. Paul Getty on FX’s “Trust” — you’ll have to go through Donald Sutherland first, dead or alive.
The FX series, executive produced by Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy, has a three-season plan in place for tracking the story of the Getty family, one that will trip back and forth in time to document different eras. And the 82-year-old Sutherland told IndieWire that given his age, he had “warned” FX’s John Landgraf that if they wanted to ensure that he’d appear in future seasons, they should go ahead and shoot scenes with him now.
Because here’s how he feels about being recast, should the worst happen and he not be able to return: “If I’m dead and there’s a possibility to come back from Heaven — or...

FX is already going all out for their 10-part series, Trust, with Donald Sutherland, Hilary Swank, and several others, but now the show has added Brendan Fraser. Take that however you will.
The series, coming to you from Danny Boyle, Simon Beaufoy, and Christian Colson, revolves around the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III.
It might seem like a point in history that you didn’t know you wanted to explore, but considering who we have involved, you have to expect great things.
Trust is headed your way next January, and it’s poised to take over the TV conversation at the beginning of the year.

The upcoming FX drama Trust is beginning to come together into one of the must-watch shows of the year. If it wasn’t enough simply that Danny Boyle, Simon Beaufoy, and Christian Colson are involved in a limited series about the Getty family, the show recently announced Donald Sutherland is on board, and now we learn that Hilary Swank will play Gail Getty, mother of J. Paul Getty III.
The series begins production in June and will premiere on FX in early 2018. Sutherland will play J. Paul Getty, founder of the oil dynasty. The first installment of the series revolves largely around the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III in Rome. While the story, of the kidnapping and the family, may seem like something rather removed from the cultural awareness at this point, it’s a story that should be able to capture a variety of demographics.

Four years after her last major (and critically acclaimed) role of Mary Bee Cuddy in “The Homesman,” Hilary Swank is returning to the screen – albeit, the small screen. While she does have a couple movies in the works, including the Steven Soderbergh directed “Logan Lucky,” Hilary Swank will also be playing a high-profile role in FX’s “Trust.”
“Trust” follows the infamous kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, grandson to the great billionaire oil industrialist. Swank will be portraying the boy’s mother, Gail, who was the first person to receive the ransom request to get her son back.
This meaty role will undoubtedly give Swank a lot to chew on, and cement her back in public consciousness. After all, acclaimed actor Donald Sutherland, and fellow co-star on “Trust,” has made a continuous habit of popping back and forth between TV and film successfully.

"I'm not sure that Americans have penises," Ewan McGregor declares, carefully and painstakingly keeping his expression as deadpan as possible.
Danny Boyle's ears suddenly perk up. "Wait, your penis isn't there? Did they blur it out?" He lets out a laugh that might be characterized as the sound of exploding joy. "That would explain a lot!"
"They have to import them from Scotland," Jonny Lee Miller adds, at which point McGregor's stone-faced look begins to crack a bit.

Emma Stone is keeping busy it seems as the "Easy A" and "Crazy Stupid Love" star has joined two new projects.
First up, Stone has closed a deal to play tennis pro Billie Jean King in Fox Searchlight's "Battle of the Sexes" opposite Steve Carell as Bobby Riggs. Stone has been linked for some time but scheduling difficulties put that in doubt, now that has been sorted out.
The film deals with the infamous 1973 tennis match between 29-year-old King beat 55-year-old retired former Wimbledon champion Riggs after he essentially bragged that women could never compete at the level of men in tennis.
Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris ("Little Miss Sunshine") will direct from a script by Simon Beaufoy, while Danny Boyle and Christian Colson are producing. This is not to be confused with two other projects in the works about the match, one with Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti at HBO,...

It’s almost October 9th, which is when we find out if you can throw everything into a film and get people to show up who don’t particularly care about the subject of a biopic.
Steve Jobs has an amazing cast, and brings together Danny Boyle as director and a screenplay by Aaron Sorkin. With Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, and more, the film is a somewhat unique effort at combining demographics. Steve Jobs, and Apple, have fans enough to hopefully sell a decent amount of tickets, and for those who aren’t overly impressed in watching the company get off the ground, Boyle has fans as well, and etc.
If all of that isn’t enough, the story is a somewhat odd view of a life, which might intrigue a number of cinephiles looking to take in a different way of getting a story on film.

Today brings some good news and some bad news when it comes to the forthcoming Apple pioneer biopic. First up, we’ll deliver the latter: most audiences won’t get to see Danny Boyle‘s Steve Jobs as early as expected. Instead of a wide release on October 9th, Universal Pictures will now release the Aaron Sorkin-scripted film only in New York and Los Angeles on that date, before expanding the following weekend and going wide on October 23rd. As for the good news, we’ve now got another look at the film thanks to a new trailer.

Universal’s Oscar-tipped Steve Jobs biopic may have had to persevere through numerous development setbacks – David Fincher and Christian Bale both exited the project early on – but finally Danny Boyle’s rendition of the titular visionary is taking shape ahead of its debut this October.
To prove it, the studio has debuted a TV spot for the upcoming drama, which showcases Michael Fassbender’s troubled visionary embark on a mission to change the world. There’s also glimpses of Seth Rogen as Apple co-founder Steve “Woz” Wozniak, while Kate Winslet, Jeff Daniels, Katherine Waterston, and Michael Stuhlbarg will all have their own parts to play in the technological revolution.
Scripted by Aaron Sorkin, Boyle’s arc for Steve Jobs is set to play out over three cardinal scenes, and going off of this latest footage, the film will attempt to strike a balance between the co-founder’s rousing, medium-defining keynotes and his personal family issues.
