It may not have been his plan, but Russell Crowe is capitalizing on the return of the iconic “The Exorcist” franchise with separate standalone religious horror films “The Exorcism,” out June 7, and 2023’s “The Pope’s Exorcist.”
Crowe leads Joshua John Miller’s “The Exorcism” as an actor facing demons — maybe literal ones. Consider it a meta twist: The film centers on Anthony Miller (Crowe), a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter, Lee (Ryan Simpkins), wonders if he’s slipping back into his past addictions or if there’s something more sinister at play.
The buzzy cast includes Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg, David Hyde Pierce, Josh Warren, Adrian Pasdar, and Tracey Bonner.
Director Miller co-wrote the script with M.A. Fortin. “The Exorcism” marks Miller and Fortin’s second feature, after the 2015 horror comedy “The Final Girls.” They also co-created the...

The term “Scream Queen” has long been associated with actresses who excel in the horror genre, embodying fear, terror, and resilience in the face of terrifying situations. For many years, Janet Leigh proudly wore the unofficial crown as the quintessential Scream Queen, earning her place in film history with her iconic role in Alfred Hitchcock‘s Psycho. However, the title passed on to her daughter, Jamie Lee Curtis, who solidified her status as a modern-day Scream Queen after starring in the classic horror film Halloween. In recent years, the popularity of horror movies has continued to thrive, with a steady stream

When the TV series based on the popular video game franchise Twisted Metal made its premiere on the Peacock streaming service back in July, it quickly became one of Peacock’s top five original series, racking up 400 million viewing minutes in its first weekend and earning the honor of being the streamer’s “most-binged” premiere. Now season 2 is moving full steam ahead, and showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith (who also happens to be a writer on Cobra Kai) has given Syfy Wire an update, saying the writers room has been assembled for season 2 and he feels they’re going to deliver something wild.
Smith is excited to be working with characters like Dollface, Mr. Grimm, and Axel, although working a couple of those into the grounded world established in the first season presents a challenge. As he said, “(Mr. Grimm) is my favorite and I’m excited to capture what the fans are excited about seeing,...

Hello, Sidney…As portrayed by Neve Campbell, Sidney Prescott was one of the great final girls in slasher movie history. No boyfriend, freaky film student or long-lost half-brother could knock her off. For that, she was easily the face – not to be confused with the ghostface – of the Scream franchise. And just like the fans, Neve Campbell knew her worth. It turns out, the studio didn’t. Now, Scream writer Kevin Williamson has come to her defense, saying she was owed every penny she asked for.
Speaking on the Happy Horror Time podcast (as per IndieWire), Williamson – who wrote the first two Screams as well as Scream 4 – said that Neve Campbell deserves the pay bump. “I totally respect her opinion…I know exactly where she’s coming from, I know her well. I love and adore her and that’s what she did. It’s right for her. I...

After a concerning lead-up to the show’s release, Sony‘s Twisted Metal is doing donuts around audience expectations! The car combat-oriented comedy series is Peacock’s “most-binged” comedy premiere, with the average account watching roughly three episodes per sitting, with some opting to knock the entire season out in one glorious shot. The Twisted Metal Peacock premiere is an outstanding sign for Sony’s future adaptations of popular gaming properties.
While NBCUniversal neglected to share the number of people tuning in for Twisted Metal, it stands to share similar success to Bel Air, The Best Man: Final Chapters, Poker Face, and Based on a True Story as one of Peacock’s top five original series. According to Nielsen, a global leader in audience insights, Twisted Metal locked and loaded 400M viewing minutes in the weekend following its July 27 premiere.

At the back end of 2022 it was announced that the 1996 hit Twister would be getting a sequel in 2024. So it should perhaps come as no surprise that similar movies are starting to release in 2023. Supercell would be one of those movies.
The start of the movie shows a young couple storm chasing, while it is made clear that they are doing this for scientific reasons, and not just as thrill-seekers. Radio Silence, the filmmaking team that brought Ready or Not, Scream (2022), and Scream VI to the screen, has come on board a Universal Monsters project that was previously going by the title Dracula’s Daughter. Radio Silence members Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will be directing the film, while the third member of the trio, Chad Villella, will be producing. Their Scream movie collaborators William Sherak, Paul Neinstein, and James Vanderbilt of Project X Entertainment will also be producing the monster movie alongside their Ready or Not producer Tripp Vinson. Jay Polidoro, Holly Goline, Kelly Cannon, and Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the project for Universal.
Stephen Shields wrote the initial screenplay for this take on Dracula’s Daughter, and Guy Busick (who co-wrote the two recent Scream movies with Vanderbilt) has since done some revisions. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project was said to center on a group of kidnappers who...

When it comes to the golden era of slasher films, most will say it was the 1980s, but the 1990s are not to be ignored as they brought us an amazing bunch of films and some that redefined the sub-genre (including one that’s getting a fifth sequel this weekend). Here’s our list of the Best 90s Slasher Films:
Wishmaster (1997)
This one is considered a fantasy slasher, so it’s a bit controversial as to if it is a slasher or not. For this list, let’s consider it one. It’s fantastic and Andrew Divoff is 98% of why it’s so good. This film is his and he makes it the best it could be. His work is both charming and menacing, giving his character an aura that makes the whole film what it is. It’s creepy, it has great kills, and the cameos in this one are to die for.

2022's "Scream 5" reinvigorated the horror franchise, which seemed to have ended with "Scream 4" in 2011. It was no small task, especially considering its legendary original director, Wes Craven, died in 2015. Its new directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett - the duo behind production company Radio Silence who made "Ready or Not" in 2019 - have openly expressed their love and loyalty to the Scream franchise, so while the new Scream films do explore new aspects of the horror genre to fit the 21st century, you can be sure they still have plenty of connections to the original films that fans will recognize almost immediately.

Throughout five movies (soon to be six), plenty of characters have met their end at the hands of Ghostface. Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere) was believed to be one of those characters, having been stabbed multiple times and left to bleed out, but an easter egg in Scream confirmed that she had survived. Hayden Panettiere will return as Kirby for Scream VI for another chance to face off against Ghostface, but the actress herself brought the idea to the directors.
Hayden Panettiere took a break from acting following the ABC series Nashville, and when the time came to return, Scream popped back into the picture. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do next,” Panettiere told Good Morning America. “I did have to take those four years off, and thank god I did. I had to work on myself — my mental health, my physical health, my spiritual health. And then...

With almost twenty-seven years under its belt and now a sixth installment to its name, the Scream movies have shifted focus yet again. The series once about its leads’ attempts to extricate themselves from whatever pop-culture refraction others, killer or not, forced upon them is no more. The funhouse of previous entries is no longer the obstacle but the rule. Films are facile – “episodic,” even, as Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) declares – but the change isn’t inherently good or bad. It’s simply different in the context of Scream. It’s finally a 21st-century franchise.
It’s not another sequel, reboot, remake, or even “requel,” as the fifth entry so onanistically labeled itself. With Scream VI, the franchise doesn’t just have continuity; it has lore. It’s been a year since the most recent killings in Woodsboro. Now Tara (Jenna Ortega) and twins Chad (Mason Gooding) and Mindy have...

Before they became two of cinema’s greatest horror heroines, Laurie Strode and Sidney Prescott were just simple, down-to-earth teenagers, unprepared for how their lives would be turned upside down by psychotic masked villains in the form of Michael Myers and Ghostface. They represent the very best of the “final girl” archetype: wholesome, chaste, attractive — but, when the going gets tough — they become strong, proactive, and courageous. However, it’s never an easy journey from wallflower to certified badass, and both of these characters had to go through hell before transforming into the icons they are now. So for this very challenging Face-Off, we’re going to throw Laurie and Sidney into the ring together — settle down, now — and see who comes out the victor.
With the recent resurgence of both characters in David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy and 2022’s Scream, it seemed like prime time to examine these two formidable final girls.

Few movies, if any at all, are more gruesome than 1974's "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." The groundbreaking slasher flick follows Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns), her paraplegic brother, Franklin (Paul A. Partain), and their friends as they roll into the fictional town of Newt, Texas in a green camper van. Their purpose is to check the burial site of the Hardestys' grandfather amid reports of grave robbings happening in the area, but the trip takes a deadly turn when the crew picks up — and quickly kicks out — a demented hitchhiker (Edwin Neal) and makes a pitstop at the nearby old Hardesty family homestead.
It turns out that the hitchhiker is a part of a sadistic, cannibalistic family. His chainsaw-slinging brother, Leatherface (played by a masked Gunnar Hansen), brutally kills Franklin and the other friends one by one until Sally is the final girl to hunt. Here is where the "The...

Rock and Shock served as New England’s premier horror convention for 16 wonderful years before its reign came to an unexpected end in 2019. While several other events admirably attempted to occupy the void left in the local horror community, none were quite able to fill Rock and Shock’s sizeable shoes.
If its debut is any indication, Silver Scream Con is, at long last, a worthy successor to the throne. Created by Massachusetts’ own horror-inspired metal band Ice Nine Kills, the first ever Silver Scream Con took place August 26-28 at the Doubletree Boston North Shore in Danvers, Ma.
Rock and Shock catered to the intersection of music and horror, but with Ice Nine Kills’ rabid cult following behind it, Silver Scream Con brought in a new audience beyond die-hard genre fans. Informal polls conducted before each panel consistently showed that more than half of the attendees were at their first horror convention.
