Jayant Rohatgi’s feature directorial debut “Sumo Didi” has its world premiere at the Tokyo International Film Festival’s Asian Future strand.
The film is based on the life of Hetal Dave, India’s first professional female sumo wrestler. Rohatgi, a veteran of TV commercials, was on the lookout for a story with a strong human connection to make his feature film debut. When Joy Sengupta of FreshLime Films shared Dave’s story with Rohatgi, it lit a spark.
“A middle class girl from a conservative household, Hetal had seen it all – social prejudices, patriarchal mindsets, lack of opportunities and the disdain for dreaming outside the box especially as an overweight woman. These are things that we have seen around us growing up. However, Hetal went a step ahead and chose a sport that did not even exist in our country. The magnitude of her dream was unimaginable. The Night Manager (Disney+ Hotstar)
Sometimes the biggest of strategists can go wrong. The minds that decided to split writer-director Sandeep Modi’ s The Night Manger into two (messily amputated ) halves , have done the series a huge disservice.
Part 2, as it were, is a vegan’s delight. All the meat was in Part 1, and even the principal performances were more accentuated by the predominant emotions in the first-half. The second-half is all about nemesis. And not of the subtle variety.
There are no new revelations for us to chew on. We know Aditya Roy Kapoor’s Shaan Sengupta has infiltrated the antagonist arms dealer Shelly Rungta’s organization.
We saw in Part 1 that Shaan won the ruthless Rungta’s trust by staging his son’s kidnapping and rescue. Miraculously the little boy disappears in the second half.Maybe he got kidnapped again, this time for real, and we don’t know about it.

The Night Manager
Directed by Sandeep Modi, Priyanka Ghose
It is immaterial whether you are familiar with John Le Carre’s espionage novel or not. As a stand-alone piece of kitschy art The Night Manager works just fine. The writers Sridhar Raghavan and Sandeep Modi make just the right switches and shifts of mood and location from the original to the remake, rendering the remake so distinct that even those who enjoyed the original would love the desi avatar of The Night Manager.
It is easy to miss out on the nuances that have gone into creating this self-contained world of intrigue and suspense. Outwardly The Night Manager is a routine thriller about an entrepreneur tycoon Shailendra Rungta moonlighting as an arms dealer .
Anil Kapoor plays Rungta with the kind of archaic bland swag that went out of style with Richard Gere in Pretty Woman. He is shown to be a sinister global criminal,...

Amiya Nath Bose was born in 1915 in a family of stalwarts. Vociferous protestors against British oppression, Amiya’s father Sarat Chandra Bose and uncle Subhas Chandra Bose often found themselves imprisoned or detained under some pretext or another. But the separation did not stop them from being connected to young Amiya. They wrote to him often. From prison cells and faraway lands, in good times and bad. Many words were censored and lost but some stayed, long after the people who wrote were gone, leaving behind a legacy that we read today.

"This relationship off screen is what helped us bring depth to the characters that we portray. Danny and Rivanah (played by Mrinal and her) are loved together and what you see on screen is genuinely that comfortable. He brings a positive energy wherever he goes. Class Of ‘83 (Netflix)
Starring Bobby Deol, Anup Soni, Joy Sengupta
Directed by Atul Sabharwal
In how many films from Prakash Mehra’s Zanjeer and Shimit Amin’s Ab Tak Chappan to Mahesh Manjrekar’s Kurukshetra and Prabhudheva’s Wanted have we seen the cop-hero battling the dreaded ‘System’ from the outside ?
As far as originality goes Class Of 83 scores poorly. It looks like an encore of dozens anti-establishment angry-cop films we have seen over the years, when in truth Class Of 83 is The original Dirty Harry of Indian cinema. In the 1971 game-changing cops film , Clint Eastwood throws his police badge in the muddy water and deals with a rampageous killer as he deems fit.
Things are not that simple for super-cop Vijay Singh (played with suspicious stoicism by Bobby Deol). Unlike ‘Dirty’Harry Eastwood, Deol has to play the law enforcer within the rulebook. Also he is not a...

Ananth Mahadevan’s upcoming film Rough Book, which takes a hard look at the education system, may be in the news for having nailed several issues through an entertaining film. But what’s also creating a buzz is the film’s unique casting. The film that has got a thumbs-up at various film festivals internationally boasts a rather quaint ensemble cast. So, while on one hand, there is the talented dynamo Tannishtha Chatterjee and many theatre seniors including Kaizad Kotwal, Suhasini Mulay, Vinay Jain, Joy Sengupta, on the other hand all the students are actually first-time actors, except the protagonist, Amaan F Khan, who is one-film-old.
Talking about it, Mahadevan points out that the contrast itself made it a very interesting concept. He elaborates, “It was not a conscious decision to make it a senior versus junior kind of a thing, but I was sure that I wanted certain raw...

Even before the movie hit the theatres, Vikram Bhatt’s Hate Story had created a lot of hubbub in the social media with blatant sexuality in its promotional videos and trailers. Apparently, the distribution rights were picked up almost instantly, following the impact that the promotion created. Producer Vikram Bhatt, with the PR agency of the film has seemingly done everything to tag his latest flick as an erotic thriller with titillating bare back posters and trailers which contained the movie’s most raunchy scenes. Albeit the fact that the movie has a lot of love making scenes, it fails to live up to the hype it created during its promotions. For all those people who are wondering if this movie can be one of their morning show options No is the answer.

"Main iss shehar ki sabse badi randi ban-na chahti hoon (I want to the biggest whore in town)...I f**k those who f**k with me." These are not lines from a blue film, but Bengali sizzler Paoli Dam's dialogues in Vivek Agnihotri's 'uncensored trailer' of Hate Story which is currently gone viral on the internet. There are also repeated sequences of Paoli going nude and a rather unsettling shot of actor(Joy Sengupta) grabbing her upper torso. And if you think this is just for the internet, then wait. Vivek Agnihotri, actress Pallavi Joshi's husband, who has earlier made the thriller Chocolate and the football film Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal, is not going to let the censor board chop off any of the nudity or profanity in the trailer, let alone the film. Says Agnihotri, "My film is not one of those Bollywood erotic thrillers...

Film: 'Shakal Pe Mat Ja'; Cast: Shubh, Pratik Katare, Chitrak Bandhopadhyay, Harish Parekh, Umang Jain, Rajkumar Kanojia, Saurabh Shukla, Raghuveer Yadav, Aamna Shariff, Zakir Hussain, Mushtaq Khan, Joy Sengupta, Aditya Lakhia and Pradeep Kabra; Director: Shubh Mukherjee; Rating: *
'Shakal Pe Mat Ja' is a Gaasmandu film!!!! If you don't understand what it means, well this is the lingo of today's generation that is often used in this film, meaning 'All Gas'.
A light-hearted comedy, the film is literally a one-day show in terms of the time span of the story and as well as its exhibition.
The prologue begins with an absurd amateurish scene of the 55th World Terrorist Awards taking place in some god-forsaken.
