2017-10-18T11:18:22-07:00Maryland Shooting Was Near 'House of Cards' Set
A guman opened fire in a Maryland office park on Wednesday. As of Wednesday afternoon, the gunman was still on the loose, and authorities were searching for the suspect in the area. The shooting was in the vicinity of the House of Cards set, but reports say that the show's production was not affected by the shooting. That didn't stop the show's executive producer from jumping on social media to criticize media coverage of the event, however. Dana Brunetti claimed that news media was not covering the shooting, but all the major national news outlets were, in fact, covering the incident by late Wednesday morning.

Despite an ongoing manhunt for a gunman who opened fire at an office park on Wednesday morning, the Maryland set of Netflix's House of Cards has not been impacted.

The Maryland set of “House of Cards” has got into lockdown while police search for a suspect identified as Radee Prince, who is wanted for the shooting of five people in a business park close to the Netflix series’ set. Variety confirmed production has stopped on the series and that the set is in lockdown until the shooter is arrested.
Three of the five people shot have died, reports the Baltimore Sun. The shooter targeted a local business named Advanced Granite Solutions. The victims were all employees of the company and police are now investigating Prince’s connection to the business. Schools in the area are also on a “modified lockdown.”

At the year’s halfway point, it makes sense to take stock of the amazing TV we’ve seen so far — because oy, what a year it’s been already. To mention house fires, Antonioni homages, magic kangaroos, horrifying dystopias and fake Shonda Rhimes dramas barely scratches the surface of beautiful weirdness we’ve witnessed so far this year. Add “The Leftovers” into the mix and there’s no denying that 2017 has been a really special time for television. Below are IndieWire’s picks for the best shows to air so far, new and returning. Come December, our minds might change about some of this. Especially given that…
Honorable Mention: “Twin Peaks” (Showtime)
We’re not even halfway through David Lynch’s revival season, and it’s already delivered some of the most memorable TV moments of the year. But despite claims the new “Twin Peaks” is somehow more than television,...

The end is finally upon us. “The Leftovers” airs its final episode this Sunday on HBO, and with it comes the close of one of television’s all-time great drama series. Over the course of its three-season run, “The Leftovers” has earned acclaim for Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta, as well as the ensemble cast, but it would be a shame to say goodbye to this series without spotlighting the men and women behind the camera.
“The Leftovers” and its point-of-view storytelling always allowed different directors to leave their mark on the series. Through memorable sequences and shots, these seven directors made “The Leftovers” an emotionally visceral and downright spiritual experience. It’s safe to say there won’t be another series like it for some time, but television is in good hands as long as these filmmakers are guiding it.

USAToday posted a great interview with the man who is going to portray Mr. Freeze on Gotham, Nathan Darrow (House of Cards). He gives a lot of insight into his take on the villain. Fans will recall that Mr. Freeze debuted in the comics in 1959 under the moniker of Mr. Zero. The character remained rather one-dimensional until Paul Dini brought a new life to him in the Emmy Award winning Batman: The Animated Series episode, "Heart of Ice", in 1992.
The exact episode and date of Mr. Freeze's Gotham appearance is yet to be announced.

Now that filming has wrapped on David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and the DC adaptation is entering its CG-intensive, post-production stage, the cast and crew have took time to reflect on the Toronto shoot and the film as a whole. Margot Robbie, playing one of the nominal characters in Harley Quinn, spoke about the volatile nature of Joker’s number two in a recent interview with NY Daily News.
Before that, however, the Aussie actress touched upon her decision to pass up the role of Sue Storm in Josh Trank’s maligned Fantastic Four reboot. Early in development and fresh off her eye-catching Wolf of Wall Street role, Robbie had been in contention to play the part of The Invisible Woman, though it was ultimately a role filled by House of Cards‘ Kate Mara.

In this new Golden Age of TV, where great shows are available in abundance, only no one has time to watch them all — least of all the people who actually work in television, and thus vote for the Emmys — the only way to look at each year's Emmy nominations is to treat them like the theme song from "The Facts of Life." You take the good, you take the bad, you take 'em both, and there you have this year's Emmy nominees list. So there were pleasant surprises, like Tatiana Maslany finally getting into the lead drama actress field, and "Parks and Recreation" making its way back into the comedy series category for its triumphant final season after only being nominated there once before. But there was also the usual rubber stamping of past nominees(*), like "Downton Abbey," "Homeland" and "House of Cards" taking up three of the seven drama...

If you're betting on "Boyhood" to win big at the upcoming Academy Awards, think again! Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" was deemed to be the big Oscar frontrunner but a double-dose of guild awards over the weekend tamed those prospects down. First, the Producers Guild of America gave their top honor to Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman," and the Screen Actors Guild followed suit!
"Birdman" took home the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award! But, since the movie is about acting, this award is just fitting.
My biggest surprise, and it'a welcome surprise indeed, was "The Theory of Everything's" Eddie Redmayne taking home the Outstanding Male Actor trophy. Sorry Michael Keaton! I think Redmayne truly gave the Performance of the Year award!
The usual suspects took home the movie acting awards with wins for Julianne Moore for Best Actress in "Still Alice," J.K. Simmons for Best Supporting Actor for "Whiplash,...

The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning, serving as yet another precursor on the long road to the Oscars.
In the film categories, Birdman was the big winner, scoring four nominations, including for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, as well as the collective ensemble cast. Boyhood followed right in its footsteps with three nods for Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and another ensemble nomination.
The big surprises of the morning’s nominations started with Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, a bubble contender in a crowded Best Actor race, Jennifer Aniston for Cake, a bubble contender in a disappointingly less crowded Best Actress race, Robert Duvall in the poorly reviewed The Judge and Naomi Watts for St. Vincent (Watts was in Birdman as well, but that must’ve slipped SAG’s minds).

As some of you may know, I'm a bit of a jack(ass) of all trades. I follow the film industry for Lr, and critique films. But I'm also an actor, I front a rock band, I'm a DJ, film editor, and director as well. Basically, when it comes to entertainment, there's nothing I don't do. For some time now, I've been mulling over bringing some of my other interests to Lr, and I'll be starting with the SAG Awards. How? Well, I've been a member of SAG for 6 years now and I also am part of the voting process. That means every year I am sent screeners of all the films being considered for awards.
Here's where a new running feature comes into play:
As I start receiving these screeners, I will write special reviews for each one and publish them here. Then, as we near the voting deadline,...

It was joined in the top cast category by IFC Films’ Boyhood, which also got nods for its co-stars Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette; Searchlight’s Wes Anderson pic The Grand Budapest Hotel; the Weinstein Co’s The Imitation Game; and Focus Features’ The Theory Of Everything. The latter two biopics landed lead noms for Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones.

2014 was the year of great soundtracks. Thanks to films like Guardians of the Galaxy and Boyhood, soundtracks full of recognizable songs have never been more important to the movie going experience. But there is one soundtrack that was promoted as much as the film itself – the one curated by Lorde for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1. There is always a good amount of hype and publicity leading up to the release of a movie in a popular franchise series, and The Hunger Games is no exception, but along with the expected appearances of the cast at various premieres and interviews, a large part of the promotional focus for Mockingjay Part 1 was put on the film’s music. Thanks to Lorde’s involvement as “curator,” Mockingjay’s soundtrack almost became a star in its own right getting attention from MTV, Billboard, and Rolling Stone. Even Katniss Everdeen herself (Jennifer Lawrence) told the media while doing press for...

When FX originally announced plans to bring Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s The Strain novels to television, it instantly became one of 2014’s most anticipated new shows. Sure, the vampire craze was nearing its end, but the news of Guillermo’s creative mind (especially when it came to the unsettling supernatural – remember Pan’s Labyrinth?) behind the helm was an exciting thought. And then the casting news started coming in, led off by Corey Stoll as protagonist Ephraim Goodweather, following up his strong supporting turn in House of Cards‘ first season. Soon, he was joined by David Bradley, Kevin Durand, Sean Astin, Mia Maetstro, and Jonathon Hyde… not a mind-blowing cast, but a solid collection of character actors that would no doubt benefit from del Toro’s visual mastery and Lost‘s Carlton Cuse helping steer the ship as Executive Producer. However, what aired this summer was not...

Important note: These recaps function purely and exclusively in relationship to the TV series. If you’ve read the books, please be mindful of potential story and character spoilers for others in the comments. Ephraim Goodweather (House of Cards’ Corey Stoll, looking awfully James Remar–ian with that toupee) is consumed by his job as chief medical officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s NYC HQ. He loves his wife Kelly (Natalie Brown) and 11-year-old son Zach (Ben Hyland), but damn if he even knows how to tie a tie or arrive to family counseling on time, let alone be more present at six o’clock dinners. He and Robin Williams’s Daniel Hillard in Mrs. Doubtfire might, together, make the perfect man. Except where Hillard summoned heroism from within the pillowy bosom of alter ego Euphegenia, Ephraim exceeds his potential underneath a hazmat suit.Only minutes...

Melissa Maerz: Jeff,
When the Emmy nominations were announced this morning, I was sitting at my desk, shouting, “Hodor! Hodor! Hodor!” Game of Thrones dominated with 19 nominations! Hot pie for everyone! I’d quibble with the fact that Noah Hawley’s fantastic update of Fargo didn’t get a best drama nod, especially since it was the runner-up with 18 nominations, and The Good Wife was unjustly ignored in that category, coming off its best season ever—it might be the only network drama that I truly loved—but the rest of the list was pretty solid. Among the smartest choices...

There’s a hint of trepidation any time a new series lands on the small screen. Censorship limitations, fiscal restrictions and an abundance of writers and directors can easily serve as points of distraction for promising concepts.
Sometimes there are just too many chiefs and not enough Indians, and when you’ve got too many chiefs attempting to hold rule over a tribe with the barest of necessities, things can head south in an instant. That’s the law of the land.
Ultimately, the legitimately scintillating concepts tend to succeed, assuming the funds are there to capitalize on and the featuring network is lenient enough to truly push the envelope, if the idea in question calls for the courageous, that is.
FX’s new monster, “The Strain” (which premieres on July 13th), calls for the courageous, unquestionably. A brilliant interpretation of one of history’s most-beloved classics (more on that,...

It is that time again as 2014 is already half over. Wow, time flies when you are watching movies. The year being half over brings my annual, “Top 10 Movies of the Year…So Far” list, and without question this is my strongest list by a long shot. One big reason is the increase of great titles that have been released On Demand. Half of my list in fact is made up of films I saw On Demand. Now I am all for supporting your local Art House Theater as much as possible, but certain films don’t make it outside of La and New York so On Demand is a great tool to experience some great Independent movies. I feel like geek culture is far too obsessed with franchises that stick to the same format over and over again. I enjoy franchise movies as well, as you will see on this list,...

"The Lego Movie"
What's It About? A boring, regular dude Lego named Emmet (Chris Pratt) is suddenly called upon to save the world. Will Ferrell voices bad guy President Business, Elizabeth Banks as the super cool Wyldstyle, Alison Brie as Princess Unikitty, and Nick Offerman as a pirate named Metal Beard.
Why We're In: Phil Lord and Christopher Miller accomplished the unthinkable -- they made what seemed like a craven toy tie-in into a movie that everyone loves. It's kind of crazy.

Attempting to divine the whims of Golden Globes voters is a futile exercise -- the quirky, let's-invite-Hollywood-to-our-party feel of the nominations makes us scratch our heads every single year.
The list of nominees for 2014 is no exception. Along with a handful of nice surprises, there are a bunch of baffling omissions. Get your outrage ready.
Snubs
"Game of Thrones": A complete shutout for what was arguably the best of the show's three seasons thus far. The mind boggles.
"Mad Men": Another shutout. The Globes' penchant for wanting to be the first to recognize new series played a part in "Mad Men" being left off the best drama series list in favor of "Masters of Sex" (totally fine with that) and "House of Cards" (less fine with it). But it's hard to believe that Jon Hamm or Elisabeth Moss (who's at least nominated for "Top of the Lake") didn't get acting nods.

Chicago – Last year represented a notable leap forward for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences as they finally embraced a few critical darlings over popular favorites, finding room for major nominations for shows like “Louie,” “Justified,” “Game of Thrones,” and “Parks and Recreation.” Despite a few wonderful surprises this year at this week’s 64th Annual Emmy Nomination announcements, it was a slight step back. There are still some very deserving nominees but there are also a few choices that are just silly and some worthy artists whose work should have been recognized instead. Here are just ten (or so).
Before we get to the list, a few observations on the full list of nominees in categories that I won’t really be getting into in this feature. It’s interesting that neither of the powerhouse late night talk shows were nominated for Best Variety Series — the press likes...

Beyonce wrapped up her four-night stand at Revel's Ovation Hall in Atlantic City last night. They were her first shows since becoming a mom and, by all accounts, she put on an incredible show. We’re not sure why anyone would have doubted that she would. Yes, she had a baby and while we’re not discounting the miracle that is Blue Ivy, we’ve never known a baby to get into its mama’s brains and steal her ability to perform. The Philadelphia Inquirer's Dan DeLuca, who covered the second of Beyonce's four performances (the one attended by Michelle Obama and her daughters), called...

The Rules Of The Game (Criterion) Jean Renoir’s classic from 1939 was met with a riot at its premiere and was severely cut by its distributor, available only in truncated form for two decades until it was restored to the grandeur for which it is celebrated today. A biting comedy of manners set in the upstairs and downstairs of a French country estate, the film bitterly vivisects the bourgeoisie with a gentle ferocity that will tickle the laughter in your throat. Renoir co-stars as Octave. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Introduction to the film by Renoir; Commentary written by scholar Alexander Sesonske and read by Peter Bogdanovich; Comparison of the film’s two endings; Selected scene analysis by Renoir scholar Chris Faulkner; Featurettes and vintage film clips; Part one of David Thomson’s “Jean Renoir” BBC documentary; Video essay; Interviews with Renoir, crew members,...

Think about it: How many truly great shows that end before the audience wants them to actually end up getting movies made about them? Let's see...Arrested Development? Nope. Veronica Mars? Nada. The Wire? Zip. Deadwood? Zero. Rome? Negatory. All of those very popular, mostly low-rated shows have had a ton of talk about movies being made, and yet none have happened. Don't talk to me about Joss...

TV – where would we be without it? Who would have thought that an electronic box of tricks could have the ability to instruct and entertain? Well, unless you tune into jaw-droppingly atrocious Oompa Loompa convention, The Only Way Is Essex. Without TV, we wouldn't have been able to see key events like the first man on the moon, the first ever Doctor Who story...
Oh, and I suppose some might say the coronation of Mrs Majesty way back in 1952. Judging by the 15 or so extras in the latest Doctor Who story, The Idiot's Lantern, interest must have been very high – a fact that will no doubt come home to roost next year when Mrs Maj celebrates 60 years on the throne in the only way that she knows how: with a gaudy, money-burning festival (Come on kids, we're all in this together, remember?) and that usual sour-faced expression that she always seems to pull.

Whoa, what a way to start the new year! After several weeks of desolate conditions in terms of horror title releases, the floodgate just burst open.
This is the week you may want to think about using up those giftcards and cash you got from returning your holiday presents. Major releases are vying for your greenbacks alongside re-releases in Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D (in case Santa brought you a 3D TV recently), and other more independent titles. In addition to movies, there's also a Buffy motion comic and the next volume of a vampire's diary in paperback.
The Last Exorcism (Review)

Starring Patrick Fabian (Interview), Ashley Bell, Louis Herthum, Tony Bentley
