Kendra Wilkinson is looking back on her time at the Playboy Mansion with new eyes, revealing that she’s “had to face my demons” about her time there amid a recent diagnosis of depression and anxiety.
Wilkinson appeared on the E! reality series The Girls Next Door as a playmate between 2005 and 2009, before getting married to now ex-husband and former NFL player Hank Baskett and heading up her own spinoff, Kendra on Top.
In the past, she’s defended Hugh Hefner after former playmates came forward about the pressures, trauma and even sexual assault that took place during their time in the mansion. That includes her Girls Next Door co-stars Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt, who have opened up about their experiences in their podcast Girls Next Level, in addition to major revelations and allegations of misconduct against the Playboy founder in A&e’s Secrets of Playboy.

The Playboy empire is a subject of extreme controversy, especially in recent years, following the release of a scathing documentary titled Secrets of Playboy. Many critics have labeled founder and figurehead Hugh Hefner, who passed away in 2017, as an alleged perpetrator of sexual abuse and exploitation. Additionally, several of Hefner’s girlfriends have spoken out against the late mogul, with former The Girls Next Door star Holly Madison slamming her late boyfriend for putting a series of strict rules in place that his girlfriends had to follow.
Hugh Hefner founded ‘Playboy’ magazine Hugh Hefner | Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Playboy
Hefner was born in 1926 and raised in a middle-class family. However, Hefner had big ambitions, leaving his job as a copywriter to found Playboy magazine. The magazine originally featured short stories, essays, and photo spreads, but it quickly became known as a publication for men to salivate over pictures of nude and nearly-nude women.

A&e Network’s “Secrets of Playboy” is not here to play, boy. The upcoming docuseries, which unveiled its trailer Tuesday during the cable channel’s TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour day, aims to dive into the “ugly” side of Hugh Hefner’s outwardly “beautiful world,” as one of its interview subjects puts it. The side that “nobody wants to talk about,” another adds.
“He really did believe he owned these women,” Miki Garcia, a former playmate and director of playmate promotions, says in the trailer.
Watch the trailer via the video above.
“Secrets of Playboy” will look back at Hef’s media empire “through a modern-day lens,” A&e’s logline reads. At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, TV is invading the schedule in a whole new way. The Park City film fest has previously dabbled in what’s possible on the small screen, but this year marks the launch of the Indie Episodics section — which will spotlight TV pilots that mostly lack mainstream distribution.
The selections include “America to Me,” a new docu-series by “Hoop Dreams” director Steve James; as well as “The Mortified Guide,” a screen adaptation of the popular stage show “Mortified,” spotlighting the most embarrassing true stories of adolescence. There’s also “This Close,” showcasing star/creators Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern (both of whom are deaf), and “Franchesca,” featuring digital star and “The Nightly Show” writer/contributor Franchesca Ramsey.
This marks a major change for Sundance, and a renewed commitment to independent television. While Sundance has featured TV programming since the premiere of “Top of the Lake” in...
