Who’d have thought the 26th annual Art Directors Guild Awards would be such a good party?
Community alum and host Yvette Nicole Brown kicked things off with great energy and a few genuinely funny jokes. There followed two genuinely engaging acceptance speeches from Ethan Tobman and François Audouy and then a genuinely emotional — and funny — introduction from Kevin Costner for his longtime collaborator, production designer Ida Ransom, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
“I’m so impressed how many production designers are not freaked out by talking up here,” said a visibly nervous Costner. “It’s freaking me out.”
The guild also awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards to Donna Cline, Anne Harris and Denise & Michael Okuda.
Oscar-nominated Dune director Denis Villeneuve received the William Cameron Menzies Award, for which he credited all the production designers he has worked with, especially frequent collaborator Patrice Vermette. Vermette, it turns out, won the gong for Fantasy Feature Film.

This article contains spoilers for What We Do in the Shadows season 3’s first two episodes.
Boredom, tedious, tiresome, flat. These are not the first words which jump to mind when thinking of vampires or comedy, but What We Do in the Shadows wields them like secret weapons without sacrificing a single laugh or scare. The FX horror farce, which is a series adaptation of the 2014 feature film created by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, follows four vampires. They have been roommates since, well, forever, but one is different from the rest.
Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak), Nadja of Antipaxos, (Natasia Demetriou), and Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry), are traditional vampires. They drink blood, a virgin’s if possible. This is usually supplied by their familiar-turned-bodyguard Guillermo (Harvey Guillén). A probable virgin himself, but off limits. For Season 2 of FX’s What We Do in the Shadows, production designer Kate Bunch expanded the world, and the Staten Island residence of a trio of vampire roommates, doing so for both logistical and creative reasons.
As she set out on the comedy’s new season, Bunch knew what she’d have to deal with first—the exterior of the vampire mansion established in Season 1. “Season 2, we lost our exterior location. They sold the property and it’s becoming a woman’s shelter, so we couldn’t go back there,” she explains. “So, a lot of the beginning of Season 2 was us trying to figure out how we were going to find a new location.”
Ultimately, rather than scouting a new practical exterior for the mansion, the designer decided to build three sides of this key set in a parking lot, right outside of the stages used for the majority of production.

Last year, production designer Kate Bunch outfitted a Staten Island mansion for the Eastern European vampires who inhabit the TV mockumentary adaptation of 2014 comedy-horror film “What We Do in the Shadows.” For the FX on Hulu series’ second collection of shows, though, the job got a lot tougher.
The new season required 20 to 30 new sets and a crew of around 100 people — partly due to an unexpected twist. “We lost our exterior mansion location from Season 1,” Bunch explains, when the owners sold it for use as a women’s shelter.
After all the time spent finding the original mansion, discovering a match around Toronto, where the series shoots, proved virtually impossible. Instead, Bunch proposed a different solution. “We rebuilt the whole front of the house to match the house that we used,” she said. Her crew was allowed to go back and take measurements of the Season 1 mansion while renovations were underway.
