The Long Halloween is still widely considered one of the greatest Batman stories ever told, and almost 30 years after the seminal comic book first hit shelves, Jeph Loeb will conclude the iconic crime saga with a new 10-issue series.
Announced today at the McM London convention, Batman The Long Halloween: The Last Halloween will pick up after the events of 2021's The Long Halloween Special one-shot, which was originally intended to be the start of a new story, but was put on hold following the passing of artist Tim Sale in 2022.
The new series won't feature new artwork from Sale beyond the cover for each issue. Instead, a rotating team of illustrators will provide work on the comic in tribute to the late artist, including Eduardo Risso (Flashpoint: Batman - Knight of Vengeance), Klaus Janson (The Dark Knight Returns) and Mark Chiarello (Batman: Black and White).

The comic book universe is vast and diverse, with several characters who have caught the attention of audiences for a variety of reasons. Among these many iconic figures stand the two DC characters, Superman and Batman. One is a selfless and noble hero, the other is a vigilante yet both have left an indelible mark on popular culture.
Batman
While both characters have enjoyed an alluring appeal and draw ever since they first came into existence, Batman has undoubtedly been the most popular of the two. And Christopher Nolan, the filmmaker behind one of the best Batman trilogy so far, offered his perspective on why the Dark Knight’s mythos is so timeless.

“When I was a kid, there was a gangster, real old school type,” recalls Oswald Cobblepot at the start of the trailer for The Penguin. Anyone who has seen a gangster flick before recognizes that kind of talk. Henry Hill, Tony Soprano, Michael Corleone — wiseguys love to wax poetic about the past.
It’s no secret that the classic Batman villain was a highlight of 2021’s The Batman, with director Matt Reeves taking a more grounded approach to the bird-themed character that removed the bright colors and gimmicks. The Penguin’s storyline in the movie focused on his rise through the mob and his spinoff series will continue that tale of ascendance, as Cobblepot works to fill the void in the Gotham underworld left in the wake of Carmine Falcone’s death.
But the Penguin isn’t the only mobster from the comics who will appear or be referenced on this gangster show.

Dceu will be officially over by the end of this year, and after that, a whole era awaits for DC and its live-action content. Apart from the Elseworlds projects, such as ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ and ‘The Batman — Part II,’ the audience also has a new Superman movie to look forward to. We don’t know if James Gunn’s ‘Superman: Legacy’ will be good or if it’s going to be commercially successful, but one thing is certain: the success (or failure) of this movie will dictate the direction of DC movies for at least the next ten years.
Warner Bros. and DC Studios are putting all of their hopes into this upcoming reboot, and if this time doesn’t work out, who knows if it ever will? James Gunn has a good track record with the superhero movies he wrote and directed in the past. His ‘Guardians of the Galaxy...

The Caped Crusader. The Dark Knight. The World’s Greatest Detective. The Bat. He is vengeance. He is the night. He is, of course, Bruce Wayne – aka Batman. And for 84 years and counting, ever since his introduction in Detective Comics #27 on 30 March 1939, Bill Finger and Bob Kane’s Guardian of Gotham City continues to dominate popular culture.
A superhero with no actual superpowers (except for fat stacks of Benjamins), Bats is – in essence – just a man trying to turn his pain into something positive; a vigilante in a cowl and cape who’s capable of evolving with the times to be whatever kind of hero the moment asks for. It’s no wonder such a dynamic array of filmmakers – from Leslie H. Martinson to Tim Burton among many, many others – have been inspired to send up the Bat-signal on the big screen in live-action and animation over the years.

“Holy God! Whattya showing me here?”
When Colin Farrell‘s Oz Cobblepot asked that question of Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader and Jeffery Combs’s Lieutenant Gordon in The Batman, he was reacting to a set of grisly pictures. The first set photos from The Batman spin-off The Penguin may not be nearly as disgusting, but they’re sure to provoke a strong reaction.
The HBO series, which takes place after Matt Reeves’ film, follows Cobblepot’s continuing evolution from the not-entirely respected underboss and Iceberg Lounge proprietor seen in The Batman to something closer to the criminal mastermind we know from the comics. Along the way, the series will further develop the Gotham underworld hinted at in The Batman, adding Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni and Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone.
The first images of Farrell shooting the series show him once again unrecognizable in makeup from Academy Award-nominated artist Mike Marino.

Robert Pattinson is returning as the cape crusader in a sequel from Matt Reeves, who helmed his first outing as the Batman. The film concluded with a rather neat ending — Batman successfully protected the city of Gotham from the Riddler (Paul Dano) and is finally regarded as the city's savior. With Riddler in Arkham Asylum, the ending leaves much room for Reeves to incorporate various Batman villains from the comics.
One of the final scenes of the film already teased Barry Keoghan's Joker and the character's presence at Arkham, to fans' surprise. While Keoghan appears for mere moments at the end of "The Batman," during which he is seen maniacally laughing with The Riddler, there's a deleted scene where he talks with Batman himself. The existing filmed scenes could very well lead the way to the second chapter in the caped crusader's early years — and there's a comic book storyline that illustrates it all.

Happy New Year, Daily Dead readers! Today, I'm kicking off our annual "Favorites" series with my 2022 picks and you'll see favorites from other Daily Dead team members throughout the week. On this week's episode of Corpse Club, we'll also be discussing 2022 favorites and what we're looking forward to in the new year. Our favorites are a little different from a traditional "Best Of" list and our lists can include anything from movies and streaming shows to collectibles and events. In short, we’re sharing with you a list of our favorite horror experiences from 2022.
This year was interesting for me in that I truly felt I hit that tipping point where more was being released than I could possibly keep up on. If you stick to just watching movies, it's not impossible to check out every horror release, but when you add TV series, video games, and graphic novels, it becomes challenging.

This post contains spoilers for "The Batman."
While Matt Reeves' "The Batman" was pretty much a triumph on the whole, it's not hard to deny that Colin Firth's Penguin was a decisive highlight. The big wigs at Warner Bros. must have thought so too, as the character will soon be heading up his very own series on HBO Max. The spin-off will apparently take place just a week after the events of "The Batman," which ended with the death of mafia don Carmine Falcone. "The Penguin" will likely address the power vacuum that Falcone's death leaves behind in Gotham, and follow Oswald Cobblepot's rise through the ranks of Gotham's underworld in order to take that power for himself.
Farrell himself has cited the HBO prison drama "Oz" as a point of inspiration for "The Penguin." That series followed the shifting tides in a fictional men's prison — fittingly named the...

Cristin Milioti is heading to Gotham City. The “How I Met Your Mother” and “Palm Springs” star has joined the cast of HBO Max’s “The Penguin” series.
Milioti is the first new cast member to join Colin Farrell, who plays the DC Comics villain, in the upcoming series, which is currently under a working title. Farrell first appeared as the character in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” film, which saw the star don heavy prosthetics to portray the right-hand man of mob boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro). Milioti will play Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Carmine, who was first created by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale for their 1997 comic book miniseries “The Long Halloween.” Previously, the character was played by Crystal Reed on the Fox series “Gotham.”

Batman: The Long Halloween has been embraced as a superb Batman tale, a solid mystery story, and a superlative effort from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. It has remained in print since its arrival in 1996-97. Warner Animation tackled this in 2021, releasing it in two parts, which I liked when I reviewed them here and here.
The parts have now been sewn together into a far more satisfying single volume, upgraded to 4k Ultra HD, which incrementally enhances the overall enjoyment.
The 13-part story is set early in Batman’s career, with Loeb plumbing the Gotham underworld as established by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli in Batman: Year One. Interfering in Carmine “The Roman” Falcone’s (Titus Welliver) gang operations is the arrival of the Holiday Killer. Tracking him with little effect over the course of a year are Batman (Jensen Ackles) and his grudging allies Captain James Gordon...

When bringing any superhero into live-action, there's always the question of how much inspiration movies or TV will draw from the costumes in the comics. While purists often struggle with major alterations to a hero's look, the truth is not everything translates well from page to screen. Daredevil is no exception to this. The typically red-clad hero actually debuted in a yellow costume in 1964, created by Bill Everett and Stan Lee. It only took six more issues until Matt Murdoch donned the red suit that would become synonymous with his name. "Daredevil: Yellow," the excellent 2001 miniseries from the late Tim Sale and...

Last week we lost Tim Sale, at this time my condolences are with his family and friends… He has pulled his seat up to the great drawing board in the sky much too soon.
On a personal level, the work of Tim Sale greatly influenced my early days of collecting comics. Firstly I remember in the build-up to the release of the first X-Men film I was watching a comic book hour on QVC. One book that kept coming up in the show was Batman: The Long Halloween. The next day I went to a book shop in the local shopping centre, not knowing the best places to buy comics. Also not knowing the prices of comics I found The Long Halloween to be out of my price range. It would be a few years before I finally read a copy from my local library and a few more years...

This article contains massive The Batman spoilers.
The cops don’t look at him like other Batmans. When Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader enters a crime scene that wouldn’t be out of place in a David Fincher movie, the Gotham City Police Department neither assess this interloper with the kind of relief we see from civilians’ reactions to The Avengers, nor even the type of awe and hope glimpsed in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
They look at the Batman like a freak—just one who happens to be surprisingly good at solving crimes. That’s one of the more amusing innovations in Matt Reeves and Pattinson’s interpretation of the Batman mythology. At its heart, this isn’t necessarily a superhero movie or even an action adventure—despite a few nominal action sequences. It’s a downbeat detective story, far more influenced by the second wave of...

Originally published in the late '90s, "Batman: The Long Halloween" by writer Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale is one of the most revered and definitive looks at the second year of Bruce Wayne's tenure as Batman. The Falcone and Maroni mob families still rule Gotham. Jim Gordon is only a Captain. Harvey Dent is still an optimistic — but flawed — District Attorney working to make Gotham a better place. Where do you go after “The Dark Knight”? Ben Affleck blew it, and even Christopher Nolan, who brought unprecedented levels of realism and gravitas to that franchise-best Batman saga, couldn’t improve on what he’d created in his 2012 sequel. So what is “Cloverfield” director Matt Reeves’ strategy? Answer: Go darker than “The Dark Knight,” deadlier than “No Time to Die” and longer than “Dune” with a serious-minded Batman stand-alone of his own. Leaning in to those elements doesn’t automatically mean audiences will embrace Reeves’ vision. But this grounded, frequently brutal and nearly three-hour film noir registers among the best of the genre, even if — or more aptly, because — what makes the film so great is its willingness to dismantle and interrogate the very concept of superheroes.
Sure, that’s been done before — “Who watches the Watchmen?” Alan Moore memorably asked, influencing decades of spandex-clad savior stories — though Reeves does something relatively unique here,...

In March, Warner Bros. and director Matt Reeves are bringing a whole new vision of Gotham City and the Batman mythos to the big screen, with Robert Pattinson starring as a more hyper-violent version of the vigilante.
In fact, we’ve already watched Pattinson dole out beating after savage beating in the trailers leading up to the movie’s release, but when we spoke to him for our The Batman cover story in the new issue of Den of Geek magazine, the actor was excited, even jovial, about where his Dark Knight might go next. Inevitably, the subject of a potential sequel comes up. While WB has yet to officially announce “The Batman 2,” Pattinson already knows which villains he wants to fight in the next movie.

The acclaimed maxiseries from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale was wisely produced as two animated feature films. Batman: The Long Halloween Part 1 was a real treat, one of the best productions from Warner Animation in quite some time. As a result, expectations were high for a satisfying Batman: The Long Halloween Part 2, out on disc tomorrow. Unfortunately, it proved to be very much a letdown.
In part one, we have a Batman (Jensen Ackles) still in the early portion of his career, learning to think and be a detective as he worked with Commissioner Gordon (Billy Burke) and Da Harvey Dent (Josh Duhamel) to find the Holiday Killer, who used celebrations to mask a series of murders. The Caped Crusader was aided by Catwoman (Naya Rivera), who was more sidekick and romantic interest than foil. The murders exacerbated the rivalry between Carmine “The Roman” Falcone (Titus Welliver) and Sal Maroni...

Batman: The Long Halloween, Part Two is the unmissable DC animation, following up the story of Part One, based on the classic comic, and you could win a copy on Blu-Ray!
Inspired by the iconic mid-1990s DC story from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, Batman: The Long Halloween, Part Two continues as the Holiday Killer is still at large and, with Bruce Wayne under the spell of the venomous Poison Ivy, Batman is nowhere to be found. Liberated by an unlikely ally, Bruce quickly uncovers the real culprit: Poison Ivy’s employer Carmine Falcone. The Roman, his ranks decimated by Holiday and his business spinning out of control, has been forced to bring on less desirable partners – Gotham City’s rogues’ gallery. In the meantime, Harvey Dent is confronting battles on two fronts: attempting to end the mob war while also dealing with a strained marriage. And, after an...

Warner Animation has been more miss than hit when adapting long comic book serials into a 90 minute or less feature film. Thankfully, they finally learned the lesson and are adapting Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s thirteen-part Batman: The Long Halloween into two films. The first part is out tomorrow and I am quite pleased with it.
The overarching plot has to do with the serial murders of people connected to crime boss Carmine Falcone (Titus Welliver) as the triumvirate of Commissioner Gordon (Billy Burke), District Attorney Harvey Dent (Josh Duhamel), and Batman (Jensen Ackles) all occurring on holidays. The hunt of the Holiday killer propels events as each attempt to thwart the next killing fails, leaving the good guys reeling and Falcone scared.

Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One is the unmissable DC animation based on the classic comic, and you could win a copy on Blu-Ray!
Inspired by the iconic mid-1990s DC story from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One begins as a brutal murder on Halloween prompts Gotham’s young vigilante, the Batman, to form a pact with the city’s only two uncorrupt lawmen (Police Captain James Gordan and District Attorney Harvey Dent) in order to take down The Roman, head of the notorious and powerful Falcone Crime Family. But when more deaths occur on Thanksgiving and Christmas, it becomes clear that, instead of ordinary gang violence, they’re also dealing with a serial killer – the identity of whom, with each conflicting clue, grows harder to discern. Few cases have ever tested the wits of the World’s Greatest Detective like the mystery behind the Holiday Killer.

I’m a pretty easy mark when it comes to Superman books. A quick check of my collection shows over 2000 books with Superman in them. Throw in Superboy and Supergirl and, well, I guess I’ve got a super-addiction. But I digress. As much as I love Superman, he’s been a well travelled property in his 83 years of being published, and coming up with new approaches, or new spins on old wheels, is getting harder and harder. Superman: Red and Blue seems to exist for just that reason, to give Superman some fresh takes, some new looks, but to retain that central core that defines him. all in just the colours red and blue, of course. I like the idea, so I hope the execution lives up to it. Let’s take a look.

Later this month, Zack Snyder’s Justice League is hitting HBO Max. Despite the anticipation and a near-guaranteed positive reception from the vocal #ReleaseTheSnyderCut fan contingent, this will likely be Snyder’s last foray in the DC Universe. Indeed, one of the studio’s chief complaints with Snyder’s vision, which they believe impacted box office receipts, was his darker tone when compared with the quippier MCU. However, Snyder’s approach only mirrored many of DC’s most popular storylines, from Frank Miller’s violent The Dark Knight Returns to the on-screen The Dark Knight Trilogy from director Christopher Nolan. Snyder can hardly be blamed for expanding on what audiences were already responding to when it came to DC characters on film.
Less than a decade ago, Warner Brothers was hot off of the success of Nolan’s trio of films that no one would describe as light-hearted or quippy.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Okay well only the first week of December but 2020 has been horrendous, so lets take the small victories. For a lot of people 2020 has been tough. Lockdowns, tier systems, furlough and social distancing. We have never experienced anything like this before. I hope in those challenging times the good people of Nerdly have kept you entertained. The comics industry itself has felt the effects of 2020. There were mass layoffs over at DC and countless books from all across the board have faced cancellation. A lot of the challenges thrown up by the pandemic have been met with exciting opportunities. The last two weeks in the pages of ‘eBuying comics’ I have done my little bit to help. This week I will be even more merry (’tis the season after all!) and be running down a few Christmas related comics. I don...

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Batman: The Long Halloween.
With the announcement of an animated two part feature adapting Batman: The Long Halloween to movie format came no small amount of trepidation. You see, The Long Halloween, was based on a Jeph Loeb comic. And like the other Jeph Loeb comics converted to movies (Hush and two Batman/Superman stories), The Long Halloween is a bad comic. But the one glimmer of hope that shone through this announcement for me was that the most recent adaptation of his work – Batman: Hush – was a marked improvement on its source material.
Jeph Loeb can’t write mysteries to save his life.
Jeph Loeb can’t write a lot of things – siblings, crossovers, Asians – but he’s especially bad at writing mysteries. Which is a huge problem when you’re writing Batman, whose core competency, besides being obscenely wealthy, is being really good at solving mysteries.

Announced at a panel adjacent to DC’s Fandome over the weekend, the rest of the slate of DC animated features for 2021 includes a couple of very interesting choices.
The first film due out is Batman: Soul of the Dragon, a ’70s kung fu movie but with Batman. It stars Grimm star David Giuntoli as Batman; Chairman Kaga’s nephew Mark Dacascos as DC apex martial artist Richard Dragon; Kelly Hu as Lady Shiva; James Hong as O-Sensei; and Black Dynamite himself, Michael Jai White, returning to the Bronze Tiger role he played in the Arrowverse. It’s an original story about Batman and former classmate martial artists tackling a mystery from their shared past.
Following that is another original story: Justice Society: World War II. Matt Bomer, the host of an IGN panel on the next movie, Superman: Man of Tomorrow, hinted that he may be part of the voice cast.
