The weather in Portland turned on October 1st, from clear skies bathing the city with sunshine to cloudy with a chill in the air.
It seemed like perfect to witness the end of a yearly Rose City tradition. For fifteen years, the first weekend in October brought legions of fans to The H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival. But the crowd gathering in the Hollywood Theater would not only celebrate Cosmic Horror in film and literature, but also bear witness to the festival's last Portland gathering. Festival director Andrew Migliore, having used up all his 'sanity points', was calling this year his last.
Such sad news did not deter the fans packed into the Hollywood Theater. The vendor room was hot and muggy as people circled around tables full of books, artwork, t-shirts and all manner of tentacled merchandise. I took a quick look, but rushed into the upper left theater...

The 9 Lives of Mara will release on DVD February 9th and the film involves witchcraft and a threatening new stepmother. From director Balaji Kumar, the film is independent, with enough of a twist to keep things exciting. The first trailer reveals much of the plot and can be found below.
The synopsis for 9 Lives of Mara:
"Twelve-year-old Robin is in turmoil following the death of his mother. This is when she appears, an amorous intruder threatening to invade his home and bewitch his dad. This darkly sexual and mysterious woman appears hell-bent on becoming the children s stepmother something young Robin refuses to accept.
Encouraging him all the way is his best friend Larry, a foul-mouthed Iago to Robin s Othello. Larry s always on hand with a scary comic book or urban legend to further goad Robin in his murderous beliefs. But there is far more to both Larry...

As Ron Howard announces the latest attempt to bring some semblance of the work of Hp Lovecraft to the screen, I'm surprised and overjoyed to see there's a new documentary about Hp hitting DVD. Called "Lovecraft: Fear Of The Unknown," it's a look into the mostly unknown life and work of one of the most influential writers of horror, Sf and fantasy.
Lovecraft: Fear Of The Unknown chronicles Hp Lovecraft's life, his creations, and his influence on writers such as Ramsey Campbell, John Carpenter, Guillermo Del Toro, Neil Gaiman, Stuart Gordon, S.T. Joshi, Caitlin R. Kiernan, Andrew Migliore, Robert M. Price and Peter Straub. It's debuts October 13 on DVD. Official Site: Lovecraft - Fear of the Unknown...

Lest I be taken for a pretentious twit with no place on this site after my last blog, I want to start this one with a quick review of Drag Me to Hell. I loved it. A goofy but great take on supernatural horror, a glorious gross out with a surprising lack of blood—but generous with other bodily fluids—this was Sam at his best. While I hated Spider-Man 3, I felt like that one had more hints of Raimi’s weird vision from the Evil Dead days than anything else he’d done recently. But now, putting Alison Lohman in the place of Bruce Campbell showed Sam’s willingness to adapt for modern, mainstream audiences—since Halloween, it’s just not a horror movie without a damsel in distress doubling as protagonist—as well as the endurance of his own distinct aesthetic, which can bear up under current trends.

Sean "The Butcher" Smithson here. Sometime scribe for these here pages at Dread Central, sometime horror host, sometime jungle explorer, sometime exorcist, even sometime astronaut. But this time I'm here reporting on what it's like to help organize events and program films for a horror convention. Or at least, what it was like for me at this particular con, CryptiCon Seattle 2009.
First off, there was an entire season of bi-weekly meetings, where we slowly zeroed in on having the vendors tables sold (it's this that mainly pays for the con expenses), hashed out which guests we'd like to invite (and then the rigmarole of who confirms, second choices, etc), and brainstormed ideas for panels and events. A lot of the things came together slow-as-molasses at first, then built to a torrent of hurry-up-and-get-it-done in the final weeks. For instance, two out of three of my tent pole films, which I...

If you live in Portland, Oregon (as I do) or close by, or just happen to be in the area this weekend, make sure to check out the Zompire Undead Film Festival being held May 15-17, 2009, at the classic Hollywood Theater (where Bruce Campbell himself has premiered and hosted showings of The Man With The Screaming Brain and My Name Is Bruce).
“I've been running the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival for fifteen years and a couple of years ago I decided to do a festival centered around the undead,” says Andrew Migliore, founder of Zompire, now in its fourth year. “I wanted to show the undead in hopefully new and unusual ways... to educate and entertain. My approach (to selecting the films) was let us assume we are all preparing for Z-Day and that these films are really training films on what and what not to do in the event of an undead uprising.
