Campfire, a startup focused on holographic collaboration tools for the enterprise market, has named Michael V. Lewis as chairman of its board of directors.
Lewis in 2003 founded RealD, a visual experience company and digital 3D cinema pioneer, and led it as CEO. The company was acquired in 2016 by Rizvi Traverse Management in a $551 million privatization.
The arrival of Lewis as Campfire chairman follows a significant investment in the company by Alchemi Project. Lewis formed Alchemi to support businesses and ideas that are poised to positively impact the world across the technology, media and consumer product sectors.
Campfire emerged from stealth earlier this year with $8 million in seed funding. With 60 patents for solutions and devices, the firm says it goes beyond what existing virtual and augmented reality specialists can offer. Campfire is available now through an early access program, with commercial availability targeted for 2022.

Tech company RealD built itself up as the most popular system for projecting 3D in the world. But lately the novelty has worn off for the format.
RealD hasn’t been content to sit back and watch as the 3D boom flattened out, though. Now the company is entering the world marketplace with a pair of premium cinema packages, aimed at paving the way for a new era of immersive storytelling that includes not just 3D but brighter images, the clarity of high frame rates, 4K resolution and high-quality sound.
“You’re seeing it with Ang Lee’s film [‘Gemini Man’]; you’ve seen it with Peter Jackson’s films; James Cameron is coming out with ‘Avatar’ [sequels], says RealD CEO Michael V. Lewis. “What we’ve been incubating over the three or four years is: ‘How do we take that concept of immersive cinema, event cinema, and put in a...

If Will Smith had access in real life to the de-aging technology used in his upcoming sci-fi thriller “Gemini Man,” the actor would have a few questions for his younger self.
“I would go back to [1999’s] ‘Wild Wild West,’ and I would say, ‘a–hole why didn’t you do ‘The Matrix’?'” Smith joked with reporters on the red carpet at Sunday’s premiere of “Gemini Man.” Smith was joined at the Tcl Chinese Theatre by his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and sons Jaden and Trey.
Smith, who turned 51 in September, has no qualms about his age. “Them young boys, they can’t handle that old man swag,” Smith said. “The young boys, they ain’t got nothing on this. I’m 50 and fine. You know, there’s nothing they can do with it.”
In Ang Lee’s “Gemini Man,” Smith faces off against a 23-year-old digitally recreated version of himself.

Gavin Newsom, running to succeed Jerry Brown as California’s next governor, will headline a fundraiser for his campaign next week on the Universal lot.
The host committee for the Aug. 16 event includes Jeffrey and Marilyn Katzenberg, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath, Jeff and Laura Shell, and Ron Meyer, according to an invite.
When it came to the governor’s race, the entertainment industry was a bit split between Newsom and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, but those divisions have dissipated since Newsom handily won the primary and Villaraigosa failed to land a spot in the general election. Instead, Newsom is facing a Republican challenger, John Cox, who badly trails in fundraising. Among Newsom’s recent contributors are Bill Maher, who gave $10,000; Alec Baldwin, who gave $5,000, and Sean Penn, who gave $29,200.

3D tech companies were previously locked in a legal battle over patent infringements.
3D technology outfit RealD has acquired the assets and technology of rival 3D systems company Masterimage.
The move follows an intellectual property lawsuit in July last year, in which RealD successfully argued that Masterimage’s 3D technology infringed its patent.
“RealD remains committed to visual technology innovation and to protecting our intellectual property around the world,” commented RealD founder and CEO Michael V. Lewis in a statement.
RealD has equipped more than 29,000 3D screens in 72 countries.
