Shot on location in Ireland and England, the film also explores Jack’s life with dementia. This contemporary narrative forms a central theme of the story, offering an intimate, compelling insight into Jack the man and the challenge faced by thousands of families universally.
The documentary features key characters from throughout Jack’s career, with contributions from Jack’s family for the first time, including his wife Pat and son John. They are supported by major figures in football, music, film and politics, enabling the exploration of the major pillars of Jack’s life: Jack & England, Jack & Ireland, and Jack & his brother, Sir Bobby Charlton.

Having witnessed two of the three statistically worst campaigns in Premier League history, Sunderland fans may be forgiven for sometimes thinking that the whole team have stolen a living. For every hero in the mould of Niall Quinn or Julio Arca, the club are seemingly dealt five or six stinkers in return. From centre backs celebrating a last-minute winner (for the opposing side) to hotheaded new boys wrecking the atmosphere of the dressing room, Sunderland supporters are well used to venting their frustration and anger at some truly rotten signings.
While the Black Cats’ few once-in-a-lifetime talents will go unforgotten at the Stadium of Light, some of the team’s less admirable characters may have slipped your mind. Here’s a rundown of the very worst on Wearside.

Niall Quinn has sensationally revealed that he tried to appoint new Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal when he was Chairman at Sunderland Afc, as well as revealing in a new book called Up There by North East reporter Michael Walker, that he tried to secure Roberto Mancini after discussions with the owner Ellis Short.
Quinn said: “We’d always had Steve Bruce on the list. Maybe some would say we’d delusions of grandeur but we had good feedback from Louis van Gaal.
The former striking legend and well-liked chairman also confirmed that he had an unlikely ally in his pursuit of Van Gaal – who would have been the kind of manager to turn Sunderland back into a major power in England if he had been snared:
“I spoke to him personally a couple of times on the phone at home. One time his wife answered and told me: ‘Keep working on him,...

This Sunday brings possibly one of the most important Tyne and Wear derbies of recent years. With Sunderland only outside the drop zone on goal difference and Newcastle just five points clear, the game means a lot more than local bragging rights.
Even without the added incentive of precious points in the relegation scrap, this game is huge. The whole region is gripped by it, anyone from the area struggles not to be taken in by its enormity.
With many great Tyne and Wear derby clashes coming before in the Premier League, we look back on just five of the best:
5. Sunderland 2-2 Newcastle United February 5th 2000
The first ever Tyne and Wear derby at The Stadium of Light is also the first on our list. Newcastle raced in to a 2-0 lead with defender Didier Domi having his shot deflected off Niall Quinn and in to the net on...

Injured French attacker Yoan Gouffran has been taken to hospital for a scan on his leg, after a follow-through by Tottenham’s Kyle Walker left the player with a cut on his shin and in obvious agony.
The kick on Gouffran left the player writhing in agony, much to the amusement of Sky Sports’ pundit Niall Quinn, the former Sunderland manager, player and director, who was offering his impartial opinions for the channel at the time. He was subsequently taken off on a stretcher, despite accusations from Quinn that there was very little wrong, while being administered oxygen, and he has now been taken to a local hospital for a scan on the injury.
Newcastle will hope that the injury is less serious than that which came at the start of compatriot Hatem Ben Arfa’s Newcastle career, and saw him sidelined for almost a year, but the pain on...

Former chairman Niall Quinn has left Sunderland and no longer works for the club, the player and the Wearsiders have confirmed.
Quinn, who resigned as chairman in October to take on a ‘Director of International Development’ role, is no longer on the payroll and leaves the club after six years to concentrate on family and business interests.
The former Republic of Ireland and Sunderland legend guided the Black Cats back to the Premier League after they were relegated with a record low of just 15 points in 2005-2006. Quinn helped establish them back into the top flight two years later and won the Championship with the appointment of Roy Keane as manager. Quinn also put together the Drumaville consortium and later persuaded American businessman Ellis Short to take control of the club and was a key figure in the hiring of previous manager Steve Bruce after Keane unceremoniously quit.

2012 will be a new year for Sunderland in more ways than merely chronologically. It has to be, after a disappointing 2011 which saw the popular demise of Steve Bruce, the sideways movement of former chairman Niall Quinn and the loss of several high-profile “star players” like Darren Bent, Jordan Henderson and Asamoah Gyan (who we may yet see again in red and white after his bank-busting loan at Al Ain runs out).
In the shape of Martin O’Neill, Sunderland have made what would appear to be a strong managerial appointment: he has a wealth of experience in the Premiership, and he knows how to win thanks to time spent north of the border shooting fish in a barrel as Celtic manager, and perhaps crucially, he has passion for the club that he know finds himself in charge of. His first job must surely have been to instil some confidence into the dressing room,...

Sunderland chairman/owner Ellis Short has confirmed he has held talks with Martin O’Neill about becoming the new manager of the Black Cats. It is believed these talks took place last night, just 24 hours after Short brought down the axe on Steve Bruce after an appalling 2011 in charge of the Wearsiders, who now lie 16th in the table and are looking anxiously over their shoulder at the drop zone.
The word is talks with O’Neill went well and he will be swiftly appointed after the weekend’s game away at Wolves, for which Assistant Manager Eric Black will be in charge. The expectation is O’Neill may be in the stands by Saturday’s game at the Molineux. O’Neilll is known to have been a Sunderland fan as a kid.

After an absolutely abysmal 2011 where Sunderland were genuinely challenging for Europe in January only to almost stumble out of the league by May, and with the Black Cats currently lying 16th in the table, Sunderland have sacked manager Steve Bruce. The club had only won two games out of thirteen played this season and Bruce becomes the first managerial casualty of the campaign.
Assistant manager Eric Black will now take charge of the North East club for the game away at Wolves on Saturday and until an appointment is made.
The timing of Bruce’s sacking is curious as 99% of the time managers lose their jobs on a Monday after the weekend’s previous result was the final straw but Bruce was given two days to train with his players before the axing came down on him today.
Owner/Chairman Ellis Short said in a statement;

Outside of Blackburn boss Steve Kean, there aren’t two other Premier League managers under more pressure than Arsene Wenger and Steve Bruce, whose Arsenal and Sunderland sides respectively have had hugely disappointing starts to the new season and just can’t seem to get any momentum going to climb the table.
The sides meet at the Emirates today in a 1.30pm live televised Sky Sports game where both managers blood pressures are likely to shoot through the roof. Arsenal currently lie in 15th position with 7 points in 7 games (and minus 6 goal difference!), Sunderland 16th with a point less. If they stay in these positions much longer it’ll be a crisis point for both.
Sunderland will be desperate to get some points on the board today having failed to beat any of the three newly promoted teams (which were probably outlined as 9 points they should obtain) and their fans...

Update: Metro newspaper claims it’s all about money with Gyan’s reps thinking the player is deserving of a better salary on the backs of interest from Turkish sides Galatasaray and Trabzonspor but chairman Niall Quinn won’t give him the dough because he is only 1 year into a long term contract.
Oh dear, Steve Bruce. Things have just gone from bad to extremely worse for the Sunderland boss. On the day he is desperately trying to secure the services of a new striker with Peter Crouch mulling over a £10 million to the North East, ironically the same city that his now wife Abi Clancy couldn’t be convinced to upsticks to a few years ago, Bruce has just heard the one thing he didn’t want to hear today.
