The 8th annual Sydney Underground Film Festival is a power-packed event featuring outrageous cult films, provocative documentaries and wild short films that will run September 4-7 at its usual haunt, The Factory Theater.
Opening Night: The fest opens with Housebound, a New Zealand horror comedy by Gerard Johnstone about a woman in trouble with the law who comes to believe that her family home is haunted. The film will be preceded by a performance by Renny Kodgers and a free pizza party; and followed by an after party.
Closing Night: The fest will close with the controversial German teen sex comedy Wetlands directed by David Wendt. The film will then be followed by a late-night after party.
Highlights: Usama Alshaibi‘s must see documentary American Arab — an intimate, socially relevatory and essential film — screens at 4 p.m. on Sept. 6. Read the Underground Film Journal review of American Arab.

One stereotype of Norway today: the country, low in population and rich from offshore oil, can provide cradle-to-grave support for its five million people and take in refugees from troubled regions all over the world, while taking time to defuse tensions in the Middle East. Not bad for Vikings who once raped, pillaged and burned. All of that is true, but life just isn’t that easy in the three Norwegian films that premiered at Tiff this year, all of which played under the critics’ radar. "The Immoral" puts that pretty picture to rest, with a couple that revolts against the welfare state that wants to take its child away. Lars Daniel Krutzkoff Jacobsen creates a pretty picture of his own, with a crew of misfits who create an alternative universe in the countryside, away from any constraints of political correctness. Far away. Other writers have noted that "The Immoral...

Soon to have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, an English subtitled trailer for indie Norwegian comedy The Immoral has arrived online. It's raw and edgy stuff and almost certainly not to everyone's tastes but also promises to be quite biting and offer a completely different look at Scandinavian culture than we are usually presented with. The festival describes it like this:Lars Daniel Krutzkoff Jacobsen's corrosive look at contemporary Norwegian society is also a hilarious and provocative comedy that cuts across class lines and rampages through notions of good taste, as it follows an ex-soldier and a single mother who go into the prostitution business after getting kicked off welfare.Check the trailer below....
