It’s been four years since The Avenue first launched, and the indie distributor just scored its first top 10 film with William Eubank’s “Land of Bad.”
The action flick starring Liam Hemsworth, Russell Crowe, Luke Hemsworth, Ricky Whittle and Milo Ventimiglia opened on Feb. 16, had the fourth-highest per screen average over the holiday weekend and was the only independent film in the top 10.
While indie films in awards contention can often make a modest box office dent, it’s unusual for an action film like “Land of Bad” to reach such heights: the actioner’s four-day total on opening weekend was $2.1 million from 1,057 screens.
President of domestic marketing and distribution JJ Caruth says the box office success of “Land of Bad” is a strong signal that audiences are hungry for more action-packed movies. “I’m just happy to see an independent film succeed at the box office. It’s...

(L-r) Liam Hemsworth as Kinney and Luke Hemsworth as Abel in the action film, Land Of Bad, a release by The Avenue.
By Marc Butterfield (Usaf Veteran)
Director William Eubank ’s Land Of Bad is an interesting movie, a story about a fresh-faced young U.S. Air Force Fac, Af Sergeant JJ Kinney, played by Liam Hemsworth out on his first mission in the Philippine Islands to find and extract a person who is their intelligence asset from a compound on the south end of the island.

Getting to the point: it’s a good action movie, however feeling at times like there are two separate movies going on; The Russell Crowe movie about a 59 year old Usaf captain, Af Captain Eddie Grimm ‘Reaper’, who is somehow been allowed to wear a Hawaiian shirt under his regulation jacket, along with smuggling about one hundred pounds over...

For many people, a film like Land of Bad might not have enough to catch the eye. However, personally, almost everything about it made me instantly want to add it to my watchlist: a straightforward, action-driven premise based on a rescue operation; a quite decent cast with Liam (The Hunger Games) and Luke Hemsworth (Next Goal Wins), Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys), Ricky Whittle (The 100), and Milo Ventimiglia (This is Us); and most importantly, it’s directed by William Eubank, who made the overlooked yet loved amongst many of the people who’ve seen it, Underwater.

There’s a particularly intense scene early on in the new war movie Land of Bad. A young soldier is faced with a difficult choice when it comes to breakfast: Fruit Loops or Frosted Flakes. He stares at the two boxes intently, turning them over to compare their nutritional content (or lack thereof). It’s practically a metaphor for the choices facing moviegoers at their local multiplex these days.
A prime example would be William Eubank’s action-thriller, which feels like a Michael Bay film if he faced budgetary restraints. But for all its familiar aspects, Land of Bad does have a few things going for it, namely the presence of not one but two Hemsworth brothers (sadly, though, Chris isn’t one of them) and Russell Crowe, who spends most of the movie sitting in a chair staring at a screen and manages to completely steal it anyway.

Season two of The Terminal List is shaping up. It was recently announced that Umbrella Academy‘s Tom Hopper is joining the cast for this adaptation. Hopper is reportedly set to play Raife Hastings in Terminal List: Dark Wolf, who is described as “a hunter, protector, guardian and Navy Seal.” Now Deadline has revealed that Westworld‘s Luke Hemsworth will now also be joining the fight in this season of The Terminal List. Hemsworth is on board to play Jules Landry, who is said to be “a self-obsessed CIA contractor who hides a dangerously volatile personality beneath his muscled veneer.” The two join the series’ stars Chris Pratt and Taylor Kitsch.

Another Russell Crowe and Liam Hemsworth collaboration was not a square on our 2024 pop culture Bingo card, yet it looks like we're about to check it off. Moviegoers are due to see the pair of Aussies team up for the second time in as many years in February's military action thriller "Land of Bad." The pair recently co-starred in the 2022 movie "Poker Face" (no relation to the TV show of the same name), a thriller about a high stakes poker game gone wrong that was directed by Crowe himself.
This time around it's not a card game that goes wrong, but a mission. "Land of Bad" follows a group of military men on an extraction assignment in the Philippines that takes a bloody turn, leaving one young officer at the mercy of the elements and local militia. Fortunately, he's not alone: he's got Russell Crowe's drone pilot droning in his ear,...

This is Day 95 of the WGA strike and Day 22 of the SAG-AFTRA strike
NBCUniversal has been at the center of a number of controversies involving its picket line over the last few months.
The studio was accused of malicious tree-trimming and construction has caused chaos as writers and actors have attempted to picket at the FBI studio.
Today saw thousands of WGA and SAG-AFTRA members celebrate a new pavement with freshly poured asphalt and the removal of fencing in what is thought to be one of the biggest collection of picketers in LA since the strike(s) began.
“This is what democracy looks like,” the crowd chanted.

In 2011, the silver screen debut of Green Lantern landed like a thud instead of soaring like a triumph. The film was dismissed both by critics and wider audiences; one of the more positive reviews was Roger Ebert's middling praise, "['Green Lantern'] intends to be a sound-and-light show, assaulting the audience with sensational special effects. If that's what you want, that's what you get."
Time hasn't been any kinder to "Green Lantern." Star Ryan Reynolds has poked fun at it in both of his subsequent "Deadpool" movies. "Green Lantern" was conceived as the beginning of a larger DC Comics film franchise, meant to rival the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead, its hero has been persona non grata on film since. Green Lantern is usually a staple of the Justice League but in both versions of that film, the only Lantern who showed up was a cameo.

“Nanny McPhee” director Kirk Jones is set to take on Donald Trump in his first television series, “You’ve Been Trumped.”
The drama, based on Anthony Baxter’s 2011 documentary, tells the story of a small Scottish village who took on the then-reality TV star when he tried to build a golf course in a nature reserve. Jones, who has previously written and directed “Waking Ned” and “Everybody’s Fine,” is also writing the project while Baxter will serve as a creative consultant.
“There was a reason why the world’s media was drawn to this story in 2006 and why there was such a determined effort to prevent Anthony Baxter’s excellent documentary of the same name, being released in 2011,” said Jones. “A special site of scientific interest was stripped of its status and a community of decent people faced an unwanted aggressor. Exclusive Update, 2:38 Pm: Two days after Starz made public its lack of faith in any more seasons of American Gods, producers Fremantle on Wednesday said the series based on Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed novel is still alive and kicking.
“Fremantle is committed to completing the epic journey that is American Gods, one of TV’s most inclusive series with the most amazing fans across the globe,” a spokesperson for the company told Deadline of a possible fourth season or more. “With Neil Gaiman and this fantastic cast and crew, we are exploring all options to continue to tell this magnificent story.”
The statement today backs remarks made Tuesday by EP Gaiman that the Ricky Whittle- and Ian McShane-led series wasn’t going quietly into the premium cable night.
Two early possibilities for more American Gods that may be coming into focus are Netflix and Amazon, we hear.

“American Gods” may be canceled, but “it’s definitely not dead,” according to author Neil Gaiman.
The fantasy drama, which is based on Gaiman’s book of the same name, got the ax after three seasons at Starz late Monday. The following day, a fan asked Gaiman via Twitter if Netflix might pickup the show for Season 4, “Considering you guys are working on #TheSandman [TV series adaptation] together it would be awesome to finish Ag’s story next! God’s don’t die unless they’re forgotten.”

“American Gods” has been canceled after three seasons at Starz.
“Everyone at Starz is grateful to the dedicated cast and crew, and our partners at Fremantle who brought author and executive producer Neil Gaiman’s ever-relevant story to life that speaks to the cultural climate of our country,” Starz said in a statement Monday.
The news comes a week after the Neil Gaiman adaptation concluded its third season. The 10-episode season debuted in January to declining ratings for the premium cable network after a lengthy hiatus coming out of the behind-the-scenes turmoil on Season 2.
An adaptation of Gaiman’s 2001 novel of the same name, “American Gods” followed the conflict between Old Gods of mythology and New Gods of technology. Ricky Whittle starred as Shadow Moon, an Old God looking to outrun his past by hiding out in a fictional town of Badger State where magic and murder abound, alongside Ian McShane as the mysterious Mr.

The TV gods have turned their favor away from American Gods, at least for now. The series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel starring Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane will not return for a fourth season on Starz, the network confirmed Monday.
The news of the premature end to the often-troubled series is not altogether unexpected, and follows the Season 3 finale on March 21. That season-ender saw Whittle’s Shadow Moon seemingly killed after a vigil at the mythical Tree of Life for his seemingly deceased and estranged father, Mr. Wednesday/Odin, played by McShane. A pivotal point in Gaiman’s book, the incident set up American Gods‘ fourth season with Wednesday taking advantage of Shadow Moon’s sacrifice for Wednesday’s own resurgence in the battle against the New Gods.

Sunday’s American Gods finale will find Shadow Moon holding an extremely physically taxing vigil for his dead father Mr. Wednesday, who also happens to be the Norse deity Odin. There’s no assurance that Shadow, whose mother was a Black woman with no celestial powers to speak of, will even make it through the nine-day ordeal. And then there’s the orisha, aka the Yoruba spirits who have literally danced through Shadow’s dreams and visions this season. What part might they play in our protagonist’s fate?

This month on Amazon Prime Video UK sees the final three episodes of Neil Gaiman fantasy drama American Gods arrive, along with the first three episodes of new comic book animated series Invincible, adapted from the books by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman.
Movies-wise, there’s the sequel to John Landis’ 1988 comedy Coming To America, which follows the story of Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem as he’s drawn back to the US ahead of taking on Zamunda’s throne. Also, in his most anticipated role since he put on a beanie for those Kia car ads, Robert de Niro plays a granddad fighting with his young grandson over the use of a bedroom in The War With Grandpa.
Also – tennis, and a collection of existing movies including the very good Call Me By Your Name, which lands on the 26th. We’ll update this guide as new release...

Updated Exclusive: CAA has dropped Marilyn Manson as a client, sources told Deadline on Tuesday, a day after allegations of sexual and emotional abuse made by Evan Rachel Wood were followed by similar claims by other women.
The news comes after the singer and actor was dropped by his music label, and his performances in upcoming episodes of Starz’s American Gods and Shudder’s Creepshow would be scrubbed.
Manson in a statement Monday said the claims are “horrible distortions of reality.”
CAA had no comment today.
Fyi – Evan Rachel Wood continues to be represented by CAA.
Previously, Monday Pm: Already dropped by his label and possibly his agency, Marilyn Manson’s bloody stint on Starz’s American Gods is over now too.
The axing comes after Evan Rachel Wood publicly accused the long in the tooth shock rocker of “horrifically” abusing and “grooming” her when the Westworld actress was still a teenager.

If your UK lockdown viewing is starting to feel a bit barrel-scrapey (there are only so many times one can rewatch The Office: An American Workplace without turning into a Dwight Shrute bobblehead) then Amazon has some potentially tasty options for the coming month. US sci-fi Soulmates starring Succession‘s Sarah Snook (pictured) arrived on AMC last year and makes its UK debut on the 8th, while Rosamund Pike-starring con-artist thriller I Care a Lot, also starring Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage, has been picking up some great reviews.
Here’s that, plus new weekly episodes of American Gods, The Expanse, The Stand (via Starzplay), and some tennis if you enjoy that kind of thing. We’ll update this guide as new release dates are confirmed and changes are made.
