A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

Cinelinx gets the willies from the Love Me Blu-ray!
The Set-up
Sylvia (Lindsey Shaw) thinks she may have found the perfect boyfriend in Lucas (Jamie Johnston), but then discovers he is the lead suspect in the disappearance of schoolmate Melissa (Kristina Elliott).
Directed by: Rick Bota
The Delivery
Love Me is a slow-building romantic thriller that will appeal to tweens and teens that can't get their fill from the current WB TV schedule. Adults may find it a bit angsty, but it is entertaining enough to keep them interested in this high-school-whodunnit.
Lindsey Shaw plays Sylvia, a girl who doesn't date much, who meets Lucas (Jamie Johnston), a rebel who shares her taste in music. As the two grow closer, her friends all disapprove, driving a wedge between them.
Things get complicated when Lucas is named as the suspect in the disappearance of a local girl, and his past relationships raise suspicions.

Creating a stimulating, suspenseful thriller that equally and expertly balances its time between its coming-of-age love story with exhilarating anticipation of its murder mystery can be a challenging task. The movie chronicles the tribulations of discovering new teenage love, set against the backdrop of a town struggling to find the truth about a missing classmate. Actors Jamie Johnston and Lindsey Shaw, two of the main stars of the movie, quickly formed a close bond on set that authentically helped [ Read More ]

I’m giving the Oct. 11 episode a solid A for totally changing everything!
You’d never know it from the silly promos, but 90210 deals with some pretty serious issues: coming out, poverty, rape, HIV — and best of all, no homework! This week, our characters dealt with those issues and more, plus the birth of Jen’s (Sara Foster) demon spawn.
Did anyone Really think they were going to give Dixon (Tristan Wilds) HIV? I mean, it did make for a dramatic hour: Dixon lied and told Ivy (Gillian Zinser) he stilled loved Sasha, so he wouldn’t have to tell her he might be positive. That gave Oscar (Blair Redford) a shot, which he took — and he finally slept with Ivy!
Jen is one of the most annoying characters, not just on the show, but on all of television. I hate the way she’s so needlessly theatrical, I hate...

From 2002 until 2008, twenty-two-year old Adamo Ruggiero played gay teen Marco Del Rossi on the long running teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation. Viewers followed Marco as he struggled to come out to his friends, fell victim to a gay bashing, found love for the first time and simply struggled to find his way in the world as an openly gay man. Behind the scenes, Ruggiero dealt with his own personal coming out story, which mirrored his on screen counterpart’s life in many ways.
Recently, AfterElton.com talked to Ruggiero not only about his decision to come out of the closet, but how it affected his career, his feelings about his years at Degrassi, his thoughts about the struggles of young gay men today, his first feature film and much more.
But we started off by talking about his starring role in Dog Sees God, a stage play about the...

In The Spotlight – Degrassi: The Next Generation, Clara Sheller, and River City
This week we look at three very different series that hail from three different countries. But all have one thing in common: each tell interesting and intriguing stories about the lives and loves of gay men.
First up, Degrassi: The Next Generation and ‘The Life of Riley’.
Riley Stavros, played by Argiris Karras, is the long running Canadian teen drama’s latest entry in its much-lauded history of depicting the lives of gay characters. But two recent episodes clearly showed Riley is very different from Degrassi’s last gay character, Marco (out actor Adamo Ruggiero). Where Marco was openly gay and never struggled with his sexual identity, it’s been nothing but a constant battle for Riley. In fact, he hates being gay and desperately wishes things were different. But as we see in this first clip, he...

Degrassi: The Next Generation has a long history of prominent gay characters and this season is no exception. Earlier this year we met Riley Stavros, a teenager struggling with his sexuality, unable to accept that he is gay. With an episode featuring Riley set to air this week on The N, we decided to chat via e-mail with Argiris Karras, who plays the troubled young man, to get his thoughts on his role.

AfterElton.com: Tell us something about yourself. How old are you? Where are you from? What do you do for fun? What kind of music do you listen to?
Argiris Karras: I'm 19 years old and I was born in Toronto, Ontario, one of the greatest cities around!
For fun I often chill with my friends and do a whole bunch of random things such as play soccer and video games, watch movies and listen to music.
