The Walking Dead season 9 has been teasing the mystery of the matching “X” scars sported by Michonne and Daryl for a while now, and we knew going in that episode 14, “Scars,” would explain the origins of the strange brand. We never expected the story behind them to be this dark, though, as the outing turned out to be one of the most shocking and devastating hours that the AMC series has ever delivered.
Via flashbacks, we learned that an old friend of Michonne’s, Jocelyn, was the one responsible. During the 6-year time skip, Michonne invited Jocelyn and her young charges to Alexandria, but the group of brainwashed, murderous children repaid her with bloodshed, leading Michonne to reluctantly kill them to protect Judith, her unborn son and her people. Now it makes sense why Michonne has become so withdrawn and taken an isolationist stance in the present.

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2015 discoveries”.
Nick Case: 1.) Recording Artists: They aren’t brand new bands, but I listed to Lord Huron and Dawes a lot, so they were discoveries to me. 2.) Restaurant: Sisters of the New South in Savannah. Most delicious soul food I’ve ever had…and I’m from Memphis. 3.) Author: Rick Bragg. I finally started reading his works after living in Alabama. Must-read is ‘All Over but the Shoutin’.
Lavallee: Christine sees Antonio Campos reteam with cinematographer Joe Anderson. Was wondering if you could describe the type of synergy/working relationship between them.
Case: I lived in a condo with Antonio & Joe for a week during prep and it was a pleasure to see them watch films together, discuss photography books, and design the look of the film. Given that they have worked together before, they have a very natural chemistry on...

If Cannes’ Thierry Frémaux doesn’t snag it away first, we might be chalking this unsettling piece of cinema as yet another Park City homecoming for the Borderline films crew. Ever since Afterschool was launched in Cannes back in 2008, their string of feature films Martha Marcy May Marlene (Sean Durkin), Antonio Campos‘ sophomore film Simon Killer, James White (Josh Mond) plus the award-winning short Mary Last Seen all got their starts at this January set fest. While creative collaborators such as dp Joe Anderson and composers Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans return to the fold, Campos’ third film is a departure of sorts as he works from a screenplay other than his own, and very busy filmmakers in their own right in Durkin and Mond are on board in the executive producer roles. Production on Christine took place last May, so this will indeed to fit to go. Rebecca Hall...

While noteworthy Sundance Next section titles Entertainment, James White, Nasty Baby and Tangerine all found distrib homes, we’re finally seeing Matt Sobel‘s break-out debut finally leave the nest. The Film Movement folks have landed Take Me to the River and are prepping it for a theatrical release next January. Look for the film to make it’s international film fest debut at either Locarno or Tiff with possible showings at Nyff and/or AFI.

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2014 discoveries” …
Nick Case: 1.) Favorite Musician: Keegan DeWitt. Keegan is the lead singer for the Nashville-based band Wild Cub and is quickly becoming one of my favorite film composers. His work on Listen Up Philip and Land Ho! were two of the more memorable scores for me in 2014. 2. Favorite Multi-Hyphenate: Andre Hyland a.k.a bLonNd cHiLi. Andre is a very talentedwriter/director/actor/comedian. His short Funnel, which premiered at Sundance was probably my favorite short in 2014. I also highly recommend checking out his Youtube channel as there are some real gems particularly his Running Late series. 3. Most Memorable Film Experience: Rich Hill. Beautifully heartbreaking. See it.
Lavallee: Was wondering what lured you to Take Me to the River and what are you hoping auds will take away from this film experience?

Safe to say that 2015 should be the roll out year for this directorial debut. Some got an early peak at this summer’s Rooftop film series and then it received some cool parting gifts from the Us in Progress in Wroclaw, Poland. Matt Sobel, a Filmmaker Magazine Top 25 New Faces of ’14 personality made his debut feature in his own backyard of Nebraska. Starring Logan Miller, Robin Weigert (Stacie Passon’s Concussion), Josh Hamilton and Richard Schif, Take Me to the River sounds like the uncharted waters type of discomfort drama that’ll make some folks queasy. Sign me up.
