Valter Skarsgård steps into the skates of hockey legend Börje Salming as the sports icon’s story is told through Börje: The Journey of a Legend. Inspired by real events, the Viaplay drama series takes viewers back in time to the 1970s, chronicling Salming’s evolution from an outcast youngster living in the mining town of Kiruna, Sweden to realizing his dreams of going pro. He spent 16 years playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs and was the first European inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Salming blazed a trail all his own and showed what was possible for other Europeans with similar aspirations. Skarsgård worked with Salming before his tragic passing to Als in November 2022 to make sure he played the role with genuine authenticity. Here the actor opens up about taking on the role and how he received emotional support from his famous family. Being from Sweden and hearing Börje’s story,...

Jason Priestley has been able to embrace his love of hockey through his recent projects including Börje: The Journey of a Legend. The six-episode biopic series on Viaplay centers on the late Hall of Famer Börje Salming (Valter Skarsgård) and his fish-out-of-water journey. He went from small-town Sweden to playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs with the show chronicling the physical and personal struggles he faced. If you’re mourning the loss of Winning Time and captivated by the drama of the Stanley Cup, then this show is for you. Priestley took on the role of respected talent scout Gerry McNamara, who brought Salming over and put the gears in motion for what was to come. The 54-year-old Canadian also directed a documentary called Offside: The Harold Ballard Story on the polarizing team owner Harold Ballard, who in Börje is played by A.C. Peterson. Here Priestley talks about playing McNamara,...

In a TV sports world filled with athletes, Swedish director Amir Chamdin sees Borje Salming — the late Hall of Fame defenseman who paved the way for Europeans into the National Hockey League when he joined the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1973 — as the perfect role model worthy of a pedestal for his humility and devotion to family.
“I saw this tough guy. In fact, he’s the most humble guy I ever met. He’s a sweetheart … he’s a king in how he treated people,” Chamdin tells The Hollywood Reporter of first meeting Salming in a Stockholm café to discuss making Borje: The Journey of a Legend, a six-part drama for Scandinavian streamer Viaplay that will bow May 2 in the U.S. after premieres in Sweden and Canada.

Viaplay’s streaming service — specializing in award-winning Scandinavian series and films — is now available as an add-on subscription on Amazon’s Prime Video Channels in the United States.
Starting Wednesday, Prime members in the U.S. will be able to sign up for Viaplay for $5.99 per month (with a seven-day free trial available for eligible customers) through Prime Video Channels.
In February, Viaplay shut down its own app and direct-to-consumer streaming service in the U.S. and Canada, and the company has now focused its international distribution strategy in building growth via partnerships. Viaplay is already available in North America through partner platforms such as Comcast Xfinity, the Roku Channel and Xumo.
Viaplay said its U.S. content offering centers on “the Nordic region’s high-quality and psychologically penetrating series and films, from atmospheric and suspenseful crime dramas and provocative and stylish young-adult series to award-winning dramas and riveting documentaries.

Viaplay shut its direct-to-consumer service in February, but the Scandi streamer is still active in the U.S.
The platform has struck a deal to launch a subscription channel on Prime Video Channels, offering originals such as Börje – The Journey of a Legend, Furia and Gold Run.
The channel launches on Prime Video Channels today, offering access to Viaplay for $5.99 a month, with a free seven-day trial.
The development comes after Viaplay closed its subscription streaming app in North America after a turbulent 2023 in which the Sweden-based company made 25% of its staff redundant and restructured around a package of sports rights and unscripted content. Expensive scripted shows were axed and sold, and the streamer has since pulled out of North America and the UK.
Exits from the Baltics and Poland are also coming, with Group President and CEO Jørgen Madsen Lindemann telling shareholders the company “will be different” in its annual report last month.

"Shut them down or we won't have an industry." Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for the mini-series The Playlist, arriving this October. This is pretty much The Social Network but about the creation of Spotify, following other series recently about tech businesses – from Uber to WeWork. In this hyper-fictionalized account of the true story: led by Swedish tech entrepreneur Daniel Ek, a group of passionate young people come together in what seems to be the impossible task to revolutionize the music industry - and the world. They set out to create a legal streaming service for music. The series stars Edvin Endre as Daniel Ek, Ulf Stenberg as Per Sundin, Gizem Erdogan as Petra Hansson, Joel Lützow as Andreas Ehn, Christian Hillborg as Martin Lorentzon, and Janice Kamya Kavander as "Bobbie T". Also with Valter Skarsgård, Amy Deasismont, Hanna Ardéhn, Ella Rappich, Agnes Kittelsen, and Sofia Karemyr. This all looks like extremely exaggerated,...

Gravitas Ventures has acquired worldwide rights to G-Hey Kim’s horror film “Don’t Click,” starring Valter Skarsgard, Mark Koufos and Catherine Howard.
Skarsgard portrays 21-year-old Josh, who tries to convince his roommate and best friend, Zane (played by Koufos), to join him at a party. Zane declines the invitation, claiming he has to study, but instead surfs the web for porn. A sexually graphic pop-up catches Zane’s attention, and when Josh comes back to an empty apartment, Zane’s laptop is still open but there’s no sign of Zane — who passes out after the laptop starts flashing and wakes up in a dank, surreal cellar with no way out.
“Don’t Click” is based on Kim’s 2017 short film of the same name. The feature premiered in August at the U.K. horror festival FrightFest.
Gravitas will release “Don’t Click” in select theaters and on demand on Dec.

Don't Click comes to us by way of director G-Hey Kim and writer Courtney McAllister. For both laides this will be their feature film debut. Writer/director (and former Bathory drummer) Jonas Åkerlund’s new black metal murder dramedy Lords of Chaos has really stuck with this critic since I first saw it two weeks ago. The controversial true crime tale has plenty to say about the lives of fringe musicians, the dangers of toxic masculinity and groupthink, and the tenuous nature of friendships amidst creative partnerships — all wrapped up in an irresistible tragicomic package. Chaos is currently available on demand and in limited theatrical release stateside.
Lords of Chaos, adapted from the 1998 nonfiction book Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground from authors Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind, unpacks an insane true story that has become legend in extreme metal lore: the church-burning, murder- and suicide-filled misadventures of a group of angry young Norwegian men that nicknamed themselves “The Black Circle.”

‘Stan & Ollie’
British audiences embraced Stan & Ollie, not least because the charming biopic of comic duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy is set in the UK, while Us moviegoers were far less enthused.
Australians’ sentiments towards the comedic drama starring Steve Coogan and John C Reilly seem somewhere in the middle, judging by its fourth-ranked opening last weekend.
Fox’s Alita: Battle Angel easily retained top spot in its second weekend but is not performing at the level here or internationally which the studio needs to recoup the $US170 million production budget and hefty marketing costs.
Mindblowing Films’ Bollywood adventure comedy Total Dhamaal began brightly but there were minimal contributions from the other openers including Umbrella’s Lords of Chaos and Madman Entertainment’s Vox Lux.
Umbrella launched Nicholas Wrathall’s feature documentary Undermined: Tales From The Kimberley on limited sessions at eight cinemas, fetching a modest $19,000 including previews.

Talk to “true” Norwegian black metal fans and they’ll tell you Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind’s book about the scene’s origins and criminality is a bunch of baloney (but in much harsher words). It’s interesting because the facts behind a series of church burnings, the suicide of a lead singer, and two subsequently high profile murders are indisputable. Those who were tried and found guilty before serving their time in prison don’t dispute the acts themselves, but merely the way in which they are presented. And who are we to defy them? These are convicted monsters that continue making music today for a rabid fan-base reveling in their no-holds-barred demonic creed. They’ve got their reputations to uphold and this story works to question their mettle let alone sanity.
So they of course hate the idea of director Jonas Åkerlund’s adaptation of said book alongside co-writer Dennis Magnusson.

With Sundance Film Festival 2019 in the rearview (all of our coverage here), it’s time to look at the promising films of February. An eclectic selection of major blockbusters, foreign highlights, and American indies, there’s something for everyone this month. See our picks below.
Matinees to See: The Gospel of Eureka (2/8), The Man Who Killed Hitler And Then The Bigfoot (2/8), The Unicorn (2/15), (2/15), How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2/22), Paddleton (2/22)
15. Alita: Battle Angel (Robert Rodriguez; Feb. 14)
Developed as a James Cameron directing vehicle, he was a bit too consumed with his Avatar sequels to helm Alita: Battle Angel so he stepped down to be a producer and give over the reins to Robert Rodriguez. Despite the first trailers selling more of a generic visual effects-heavy drama, hopefully there is something stranger under the surface in this adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s work, following a non-human awakening with virtually no memory.

Rory Culkin and Sky Ferreira star in the disturbing, darkly comic new trailer for Lords of Chaos, director Jonas Åkerlund’s upcoming horror-dramedy film about the ill-fated Norwegian black-metal band Mayhem – and the series of crimes in the 1990s that define the band’s legacy. The movie, which premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, hits theaters on February 8th.
The clip, soundtracked by Sigur Rós, opens with young guitarist Euronymous (Culkin) narrating his innocent early days. “Here I am: an average teenager, may think,” he says. “But you couldn’t be more wrong.

A quick glance at Jonas Åkerlund’s music video credits and one might be surprised that the guy who directed “Telephone” for Lady Gaga would make a murder thriller about angsty teenagers in a black metal band. But in the latest narrative feature from the Norwegian filmmaker, “Lords of Chaos,” which just released its first official trailer, Åkerlund stays true to his metal roots. Cutting a striking figure with his signature long black hair and leather jacket, Åkerlund’s latest film is a love letter to his youth — death metal style.
The official synopsis reads: “A teenager’s quest to launch Norwegian Black Metal in Oslo in the 1980s results in a very violent outcome. Lords of Chaos tells the true story of True Norwegian Black Metal and its most notorious practitioners — a group of young men with a flair for publicity, church-burning and murder: Mayhem.”

"Everyone around you are disgusting little insects." Gunpowder & Sky has debuted the killer full-length, official trailer for the indie horror drama Lord of Chaos, which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year in the Midnight section (as a late addition to the fest). The indie film is based on "truth and lies", as the marketing indicates, telling the (mostly true) story of an attempt to launch Norwegian Black Metal, following its most notorious practitioners at the time. The plot is actually about a teenager's quest to spread Norwegian Black Metal in Oslo, Norway in the early 1990s, which results in a very violent outcome. Rory Culkin stars, with Emory Cohen, Sky Ferreira, Jack Kilmer, and Valter Skarsgård. The first teasers for this didn't show much, but this trailer gives us plenty of crazy footage to chew on. And this looks totally gnarly, with some crazy violent, intense moments...

This past Tuesday night, Jonas Åkerlund’s Lords of Chaos closed out the Midnighter premieres at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Starring Rory Culkin, Emory Cohen, Jack Kilmer, Sky Ferreira, Valter Skarsgård, and Sam Coleman, Akerlund’s Lords recounts (in its own way) the start of the Norwegian Black Metal movement in the late 1980s, which was pioneered by Euronymous (Culkin), the founder of the band Mayhem, and how jealousy and egos corrupted the scene once an eager fan-turned-bandmate Varg (Cohen) takes Euronymous’ ideologies as a battle cry, culminating in an unforgettable showdown between the two musicians.
Ahead of its premiere, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with a handful of folks behind Lords of Chaos, including co-writer/director Åkerlund, co-stars Culkin, Kilmer, and Ferreira, and producer Danny Gabai, who discussed the challenges of taking the infamous story of Mayhem and bringing it to the big screen, blending fact and fiction,...

The sordid history of black metal has long fascinated headbangers and outsiders alike. More than just a lo-fi genre of extreme music, it was thought of by its ardent practitioners as a movement — and, like most movements founded upon ill-advised and/or xenophobic ideals, it eventually turned violent. Vice Films, Insurgent Media and 20th Century Fox are bringing black metal’s most infamous story to the screen with “Lords of Chaos,” an adaptation of the book by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind.
