"The German documentary Under Control depicts a world where every precaution requires a set of additional precautions," writes Benjamin Mercer in the L. "In detailing the impossibly elaborate (but still not infallible) safety measures put in place in the shadow of Germany and Austria's atomic cooling towers — and in its slow pans of the plants' mechanical daily operations — Volker Sattel's superlative film highlights the permanent lockdown at several nuclear colonies."
"There's something truly terrifying about elaborate systems of precaution," writes Eric Hynes in Time Out New York. "Danger lurks in the shadows of safety…. In lieu of a traditional narrative arc and talking-head explication — there are, in fact, few words spoken throughout the film — Sattel constructs a tone poem via impeccably composed pictures that toe the line between beauty and banality, revelation and tedium."

Some pretty exciting news here on Bd as Silke Olthoff took top honors at this years Schnitt Awards for her editing of Marvin Krens Berlin zombie movie Rammbock: Berlin Undead, the Bloody Disgusting Selects flick that's now available on DVD and VOD. The jury, which included last years Schnitt winner Monika Willi (The White Ribbon), praised Olthoffs successful splicing of the horror and romance genres. The zombie invasion is terrifyingly believable while the love story truly touching, the jury said in a statement. Both strands hold and build tension until the (films) finale. The Schnitt Prize for best documentary went to Stephan Krumbiegel and Volker Sattel for their editing of Sattels atomic energy doc Under Control while the up-and-coming honor went to Rolf Hellat for his edit of Corina Schingrubers short film I ovo je Beograd.

The crows knew it from Day One: Berlin 2011 would be a—slightly—happier experience. Normally, when night began to fall, the crows descended upon the frost-bleak trees around Potsdamer Platz and cawcawed for hours, filling the silence of bad cinema, crushed hopes and now-for-real lost illusions with their woe-cum sorrowful sounding songs. Hundreds, maybe thousands of them. The trees were black for birds. Every evening, starting around 5pm or 6pm, reliably—you could set your watch to them (if you take things easy, that is...). Yet, this time around, the crows were nowhere to be seen. Maybe it's true what a friend of TO1..., comrade Möller suggested: It looks as if the crows were trying to make Berlin their permanent home, become true city slickers, which necessitates certain changes of behavior; rings scientifically solid. Still, we couldn't shake off the feeling that they somehow sensed a thing or two,...

Already dedicated to a fascinating topic when it screened as part of the Berlin Film Festival in February, Volker Sattel's Unter Kontrolle (Under Control) has become virtually essential viewing given recent events in Japan.A study of atomic energy sites - both active and not - Unter Kontrolle gives a fascinating look into a largely hidden world. Here's how the Berlin Film Festival described it:a tour of different places related to the nuclear industry in Germany and Austria: active and disused nuclear power stations, training facilities, the International Atomic Energy Agency, an institute for risk research, the Annual Meeting on Nuclear Technology, a permanent repository for radioactive waste, as well as research centers. A filmic contribution to contemporary industrial and technological history. The images are...

The Berlin International Film Festival (German: Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin), one of the world’s leading film festivals and most reputable media events has just announced their complete lineup for the Forum program this year, and it looks incredible once again.
With 274,000 tickets sold and 487,000 admissions, it is considered the largest publicly-attended film festival worldwide. Up to 400 films are shown in several sections, representing a comprehensive array of the cinematic world. Around twenty films compete for the awards called the Golden and Silver Bears. Basically it is the place to be if you work in the business. The European Film Market (Efm), a film trade fair held simultaneously to the Berlinale, is a major industry meeting for the international film circuit once a year. The trade fair serves distributors, film buyers, producers, financiers and co-production agents. The festival has established a cosmopolitan character integrating art, glamour, commerce and a global media attention.
