The Latin Grammys made history last year when its awards ceremony, typically hosted in the United States, moved overseas to Seville, Spain. During the big event, the Latin Recording Academy President Manuel Abud took Rolling Stone behind the scenes and showed us how the organization pulled off a “magical celebration.”
In a new video, we see Abud walking through different elements of the awards show, from its red carpet to its magnificent stage. Abud stops by the outside rotunda of Seville’s Conference and Exhibition Centre (Fibes), where the awards...

Music’s biggest night, the 2024 Grammy Awards, is still a few weeks away. But as awards season officially kicks off this Sunday with the 2024 Golden Globes, the best musical works in film and TV will be honored, too. Rounding out the stacked list of presenters for the Jan. 7 ceremony are Dua Lipa, Jon Batiste, Jared Leto, and Andra Day.
Among the musicians announced as presenters, Lipa is the only artist nominated at this year’s ceremony. The singer’s hedonistic Barbie anthem “Dance the Night” is up for Best Original Song.

Laura Pausini was not only named Person of the Year at the 2023 Latin Grammys, but also received a “surprise” from Rauw Alejandro, who performed a snippet of her song “Se Fue” when he took the stage right after she accepted her award last Thursday.
In a recent interview, the Italian music legend shared her reaction to the performance, saying she liked Rauw’s version of the fan-favorite ballad more than her own. She added that she’d be open to re-recording it with Rauw.

There was plenty of uncertainty surrounding the Latin Grammys this year. For the first time, the award show was planned in Sevilla, Spain, a cross-continental move that sparked plenty of debate.
The European country has had a complicated place with the awards show, and prior to the ceremony, fans pointed out it’s not part of Latin America — though the Latin Grammys have always considered all music, as long as it’s 51 percent in Spanish. Still, others worried that hosting the show across the world would cause logistical issues for...

Karol G won Album of the Year, Natalia Lafourcade won Record of the Year, Shakira and DJ Bizarrap won Song of the Year, and Joaquina was voted Best New Artist to headline the 24th Latin Grammys, held tonight in Seville, Spain.
For the first time, Latin music’s biggest night was held outside the United States, as Seville rocked to the sounds of reggaeton, hip-hop, merengue, tango, and every genre of Latin music.
It was Karol G’s big night, as the singer took home the Latin Grammy for Album of the Year for “Mañana Será Bonito.” She joked from the stage about how much she loves to talk, but in moments like these, she finds herself speechless.
“Es demasiado chimba,” she said of winning the award, which translates to, “It’s very cool.” Karol G added that the album changed her life and she’s happy it changed a...

It’s Rauw Alejandro’s planet and we’re just living in it. The Puerto Rican reggaeton star just took the stage at the Latin Grammys in Seville, Spain Thursday to perform a medley of songs, along with a tribute to Laura Pausini and a performance with Juanes.
Rauw opened his performance with a pre-recorded, autotune-supported rendition of Pausini’s ballad “Se Fue” while surrounded by candles and a ring of fire. (Was that aimed at Rosalía?)

The Oscar category of Best Original Song seems to have a concrete group of four tunes anticipated to be selected as nominees for Tuesday’s announcement. They include Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award winner “Naatu Naatu” from “Rrr” (M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose), plus “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, and “Ciao Papa” from “Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio”. That leaves at least one spot potentially open for a surprise nominee. When predicting the song category, it is best to keep in mind that the music branch clearly has their favorites, and that usually tends to fill up a couple uncertain slots. This year, two of those songwriters may have a better shot at another Oscar nomination than most people think: perennial nominees Diane Warren for “Applause” from “Tell It Like A Woman,” and J. Ralph for “Dust & Ash” from the documentary...

The 14 Oscar nominations Alex North received for his film scores between 1952 and 1985 make him one of the most-recognized composers in academy history, but also one of the most overlooked, as all of his outings were unsuccessful. He did, however, earn the organization’s esteem in 1986 as the recipient of an honorary Oscar – the first given to an artist in his music field. Now, the academy’s board of governors have chosen to fill in another blank space by making Diane Warren the first songwriter on their list of honorary awardees. After 13 unfortunate Best Original Song losses, the time has finally come for the perennial contender to have her day in the sun.

Eurovision traditionally has been a place where politics were frowned upon, at least in the overt songs . But the war in Ukraine is much on the world’s mind, so Eurovision made a statement right at the top of today’s finals.
The show began with the audience singing “Give Peace a Chance,” the first of many nods to the ongoing combat situation. Later, Laura Pausini, the Italian cohost, used her opening number for a “Peace on Earth” message. Later, Iceland’s entry had a Ukranian flag on their hands and guitars and shouted “Peace for Ukraine” at the end of their performance. And many delegation held a Ukrainian flag along with their own in the arena’s Green Room section.
Highlighting the competition’s final round, broadcast live from Italy to millions around the world, was the appearance of Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra. Their song, “Stefania,” was considered a favorite heading into the finals.

Also on the TV side of things this month is season 2 of the beautifully rotoscoped series Undone on April 29. Rosa Salazar returns as Alma, a woman who may have become unstuck in time to help save her scientist father’s life. Before that, the British TV series The Outlaws makes its debut...

Giorgio Diritti’s biopic “Hidden Away,” about crazed primitivist painter Antonio Ligabue, was the big winner at Italy’s 66th David di Donatello Awards, the country’s top film prizes.
The Davids were held with an in-person ceremony aired from two venues amid a strong spirit of restart as Italian movie theaters gradually begin to reopen.
“Hidden Away,” which was the frontrunner with 15 nominations, scored seven statuettes including best picture, director and actor honors won by Elio Germano who tackles “the fiendishly difficult role” of the self-taught artist “with customary gusto,” as Variety critic Jay Weissberg noted in his review.
The best actress statuette went to Sophia Loren for her role as Madame Rosa, a former prostitute and Holocaust survivor, in Netflix Original “The Life Ahead,” directed by her son Edoardo Ponti. The Italian icon’s return to the big screen after a decade had been snubbed by the Oscars earlier this year.

Italy’s 66th David di Donatello Awards are set to celebrate on May 11 a year of resilience for Cinema Italiano that also looks likely to germinate some creative renewal, just as Italian movie theaters start to reopen and production is booming.
Giorgio Diritti’s biopic “Hidden Away,” about crazed primitivist painter Antonio Ligabue, Gianni Amelio’s wistful “Hammamet,” which reconstructs the Tunisian self-exile of scandal-plagued Italian leader Bettino Craxi, and dark drama “Bad Tales” by the D’Innocenzo Brothers lead the crowded field for Italy’s equivalent of the Oscars, with no clear frontrunner.
Significantly, “Hidden Away,” which scooped 15 nominations, and “Bad Tales,” which scored 13, both star actor Elio Germano. And Germano also plays the lead in another standout title in the Davids race, Netflix Italian Original “The Incredible Story of Rose Island,” which landed 11 noms, including one for the pic’s producer, multihyphenate Matteo Rovere, whose Groenlandia Group is having a banner year.

At the 93rd Academy Awards, songwriter Diane Warren made the wrong kind of history, losing out in her 12th bid for Best Original Song.
With her loss last night, Warren became the most-nominated woman in the history of the Oscars to have never won. But she is nonetheless taking it all in stride.
“Ok so I lost again but U know what was the hugest win?? Feeling more love and support than I have ever felt in my life,” she wrote on Facebook. “Thank U everyone in my movie music community who voted for this song, U are the best of the best and whenever U choose a song of mine it is huge huge honor that I don’t take lightly and that I am deeply grateful for. Thank U everyone for all the kind and lovely words of support, it means more than any statue.”

It has been another strange and uncertain year for Hollywood, with the pandemic hitting cinemas hard and streaming services rising to hold the fort. It has also been a year in which we’ve seen a growing diversity in front of, and behind the camera, with an increasing focus on new voices and new stories being told.
Last year saw Bong Joon-ho ‘s Parasite achieve Oscar greatness and, for a brief pre-covid moment, it seemed that the world of cinema was beginning to embrace a wider world. The 2021 BAFTAs showed signs this was continuing with Minari, Another Round and Promising Young Woman taking home a clutch of awards each.
This year’s American Academy Awards will be a strange affair, certainly one to remember.
Here is the full list of nominations with Winners in bold.

In one of the only upsets of the evening, “Fight for You,” H.E.R.’s end-title theme for “Judas and the Black Messiah,” won the best song Academy Award Sunday night.
The 23-year-old singer-songwriter was clearly shocked by the win but thanked her parents, noting, “those days of listening to Sly and the Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye — they really paid off!”
The soul-flavored song by the singer and her co-writers, D’Mile and Tiara Thomas, featured under the end titles of the historical Black Panthers story. It came as a surprise to many, as “Speak Now,” from “One Night in Miami,” “Io Si” from “The Life Ahead,” and “Husavik” from “Eurovision Song Contest” had generally been thought to be the front runners.

H.E.R. brought the themes and even subject of the film “Judas and the Black Messiah” into the performance of her Oscar-nominated song “Fight for You” on the Academy Awards’ pre-show telecast, “Into the Spotlight,” Sunday. Watch it below.
The singer-songwriter started the number off at a drum kit before moving out in front of her band, soon joined by a large phalanx of beret- (and mask-) wearing dancers styled to resemble the Black Panthers. The circular platform at the center of the stage atop the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures showed video images of Fred Hampton, whose betrayal and murder are at the heart of “Judas.” Twin banners bearing the message “Power of the people” were unfurled on either side of the platform.

Molly Sanden may not be a household name, but she just beat out several other A-listers in our recent poll that asked 2021 Oscars viewers to vote for the best performance on the pre-show. The Swedish pop star took on the song “Husavik” from “Eurovision Song Contest” (watch above), stepping in for Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams who memorably performed it during the Netflix movie. She tops our poll results with 64%, more than four times her closest competitor. Here’s a closer look at the poll results:

14% — H.E.R. (“Fight for You”)
11% — Leslie Odom Jr. (“Speak Now”)

One of the major changes made to the pandemic-impacted 2021 Academy Awards was pre-recording all Original Song nominees and moving them to the 90-minute official pre-show, Oscars: Into the Spotlight on ABC.
“Húsavík”, performed by Molly Sandén, was taped in Húsavík, Iceland where Sandén was joined by a children’s choir. In the movie, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, the song is performed by Rachel McAdams and Will Ferrell with vocals by Sandén and Ferrell. Filmed at night, the Oscar performance ended with fireworks over the picturesque Húsavík harbor.
The other songs, “Io Sì (Seen)” from The Life Ahead (La Vita Davanti a Se), “Hear My Voice” from The Trial of the Chicago 7, “Speak Now” from One Night in Miami and “Fight For You” from Judas and the Black Messiah, were shot at the Dolby Family Terrace of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles with views of the city.

Sunday night’s Oscar ceremony was historic in more ways than one, making the 441-day wait for the 93rd Academy Awards well worth it.
“The Father” star Anthony Hopkins nabbed actor, Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) took home the actress prize, Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) won for supporting actor and “Minari’s” Yuh-Jung Youn claimed supporting actress, becoming the first Korean actor to do so. Nine actors of color earned Academy Award nominations — an Oscar record for diversity in those categories — but only two won. Additionally, more women were nominated in 2021 than in any previous year.
“Nomadland’s” Chloé Zhao made history as well, becoming the second woman and the first woman of color to win an Oscar for directing. The film also won best picture.

Another virtual ceremony, another missing red carpet? Not for the Oscars. Just as the Academy somewhat controversially brought the nominees to the show in real life, rather than attempting the fully virtual shows we’ve seen for Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG awards, the Oscars kicked off in style Sunday with a real red carpet. Usually the pinnacle red carpet show of the year, the Oscars tried its best to bring some pre-pandemic level glamour to tonight’s awards at Los Angeles’ Union Station.

The longest awards season in modern history is finally ready to end. On Sunday, April 25, the 93rd annual Academy Awards will take place and crown one of eight films as Best Picture of the year(s): “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Mank,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Promising Young Woman,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” The 2021 Oscars will be unlike any show in memory — a multi-venue production shepherded by, among others, former Best Director winner Steven Soderbergh. “The most exciting thing about this show is that it is going to feel like a film, in the sense that, at the end, we hope it’ll feel like you watched a movie,” Soderbergh told Vanity Fair about his plans for the show. The 93rd annual Academy Awards have finally arrived. After months of delay and an extended awards season that pushed the calendar to its limit, the 2021 Oscars take place Sunday, April 25 beginning at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt live from Los Angeles and points around the world. This year’s ceremony will be unlike any other in Academy Awards history, with multiple locations in Los Angeles (the Dolby Theatre and Union Station) as well as hub venues in London and Paris — accommodations forced by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
