Last year it was strike action in Hollywood, now it’s Canada.
The Writers Guild of Canada (Wgc) has “overwhelmingly” voted in favor of authorizing strike action if there is no resolution to the ongoing talks with the Canadian Media Producers Association.
Some 96.5% of voted in favour of a strike mandate, with the week-long voting period also marking the highest turnout in Wgc history with 70.2% of eligible voters involved.
“This strike authorization vote, a first in the Guild’s 33-year history, represents a pivotal moment for Canadian screenwriters,” said Wgc Executive Director Victoria Shen. “It underscores our members’ commitment to securing fair compensation and meaningful AI protections in an ever-evolving industry.
“While a strong strike mandate does not necessarily mean we will strike, it tells the producers we are ready to defend ourselves if necessary. We remain committed to negotiating a fair agreement for our members.”

The Writers Guild of Canada has called for a strike-authorization vote amid ongoing negotiations on its Independent Production Agreement with the Canadian Media Producers Association.
Voting is open through April 23, giving the Wgc the opportunity to call a strike as early as next week if approved by members.
The current contract expired December 31 but has remained in effect as the two parties continued to bargain. Bargaining on a new contract began in October.
In a memo to members last month, the Wgc wrote that it had last presented an updated proposal to the Cmpa on February 26 and were awaiting a response.
“The main issues that remain outstanding include AI protection and compensation,” the memo reads.
Last year, during Hollywood’s dual strikes, the Writers Guild of Canada — which represents 2,500 professional English-language Canadian screenwriters — called attention to the struggles of its own screenwriters in a submission to the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission.

The Writers Guild of Canada has applauded its sister organization Writers Guild of America’s tentative deal with major Hollywood studios and streamers, which could set the pattern for upcoming Canadian writer-producer contract renewal talks.
“We will be looking very closely at the details of the deal,” Wgc executive director Victoria Shen said in a statement sent to The Hollywood Reporter on Monday. In October, the Wgc will start its own negotiations with the Canadian Media Producers Association, representing local indie producers.
In June 2022, the Wgc and Cmpa extended their Independent Production Agreement, which governs workplace conditions and pay rates, for 18 months. The current Ipa contract is set to expire on Dec. 31, 2023.
On Monday, the Canadian writers guild praised the WGA deal and added its members supported the U.S. writers guild by refusing struck work and rallying in solidarity both in Canada and the U.S.

The So So Glos singer/bassist Alex Zarou Levine has revealed he has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called adenoid cystic carcinoma and started a GoFundMe to help out with medical costs.
“Almost immediately following The So So Glos sold-out show at Bowery Ballroom, I began to experience the same sinus issues that had led to emergency surgery the week prior. After a series of tests, I found out that I have a cancerous tumor,” Levine wrote in a lengthy note on Instagram, before touching on his lifelong battle with the rare metabolic disorder homocystinuria. “Navigating health is something I have all too much experience with. My whole life I’ve been guided down hospital hallways, held by rebel music. What’s gotten me this far is the endless desire to create. Saying that the production and presentation of Canadian programming “is in a state of collapse,” the Writers Guild of Canada revealed today that during the past five years, the aggregate earnings of its Canadian citizen members have declined by nearly 22% when adjusted for inflation.
“These numbers demonstrate the dire straits that Canadian screenwriters find themselves in,” said Wgc President Alex Levine. “The 22% drop in Canadian screenwriter earnings has been devastating to our members. Out of work writers are switching careers. Others are leaving the country. Our domestic industry is dying.”

The Writers Guild of Canada claims its members have seen their average pay slide by 22 percent over the last five years, when adjusted for inflation, in a submission to Canada’s broadcast and telecom regulator.
“These numbers demonstrate the dire straits that Canadian screenwriters find themselves in. The 22 percent drop in Canadian screenwriter earnings has been devastating to our members. Out of work writers are switching careers. Others are leaving the country. Our domestic industry is dying,” Wgc president Alex Levine told the Crtc as the media regulator looks to bring Hollywood online players for the first time into its regulatory framework.
The Wgc did not quantify the fall in writer earnings over five years in dollar terms, but did tell The Hollywood Reporter the median earnings for unionized screenwriters was $28,284 in 2019, before the impact of the pandemic. The guild also stated that rising inflation has pushed up foreign and local production budgets in Canada,...

Update, 1.18am, May 3: The Australian and Canadian film and TV unions have joined the UK’s writers’ guild in telling their writers to down tools on U.S. shows during the strike.
International sources have pointed to the possibility of the Hollywood studios looking to Australian, Canadian and UK writers to pick up U.S. work during the industrial action, but each guild has strongly advised its members against that course of action.
The Australian Writers’ Guild today issued a statement throwing their weight behind the WGA. “The Australian Writers’ Guild supports our fellow writers of the WGA in their current negotiations and in their decision to take strike action,” said the Awg. “The rights and conditions of screenwriters underpin any healthy and vibrant screen industry.

The Writers Guild of Canada has told its members to follow Writers Guild of America strike rules and not accept any work under the WGA jurisdiction.
“As a fellow guild and member of the International Affiliation of Writers Guilds, the Writers Guild of Canada will support the WGA during its strike to the fullest extent possible. The compensation issues raised by WGA writers are the same concerns affecting writers around the world,” the Canadian writers guild said in a statement to its members on Tuesday that was obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
The Wgc communication to its rank and file followed unionized Hollywood screenwriters getting ready to set up picket lines for the first time in 15 years as they failed to agree on new contract terms with major studios and streamers. Heart-on-their-sleeve rockers the Gaslight Anthem reunited last year and launched their first tour in four years. Now they’re dropping new music: “Positive Charge” is the New Jersey group’s first new song in nine years. And as its title suggests, it’s electrifying.
Opening with a stomping drumbeat and a skronky guitar lick, the track’s dissonant attack is at odds with the optimistic message of the lyrics. “I wanna live, I wanna love you a little longer,” singer Brian Fallon declares. “How I’ve missed you/and feeling good to be alive.

On Tuesday, the world lost an icon in the legendary performer, civil rights activist, and humanitarian Harry Belafonte. The Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winner passed away at the age of 96. After starting his career in his native New York City as a jazz singer in the late 1940s and early ’50s, often backed by the likes of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Max Roach, he released his first hit song “Matilda” in 1953. Then, a year later, he won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for “John Murray Anderson’s Almanac.” His first album “Calypso” was released in 1956 and brought unquestionably the most enduring song of his career, “Day-o (The Banana Boat Song).”
Belafonte went on to regularly perform with the Rat Pack in Las Vegas throughout the years while also transitioning to the screen. During the 1950s, he starred in such films as “Carmen Jones,” “Island in the Sun,...

The Writers Guild of Canada has named veteran labor negotiator Victoria Shen as its new executive director.
As the first person of color to hold the post, Shen replaces longtime Wgc executive director and president Maureen Parker as head of the national guild representing around 2,500 homegrown screenwriters.
Before joining the Wgc, Shen was director of national industrial relations and counsel at the Canadian Media Producers Association, representing local indie film and TV producers that at times are called on to hammer out major labor deals on behalf of American producers shooting in Canada.
She also worked as a special advisor at the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists, representing domestic performers.
“I’m thrilled to be part of the Writers Guild of Canada. I look forward to working closely with our talented members, and other leaders and creators in our industry, to ensure that Canadian stories and storytellers...

Brooklyn band the So So Glos are known for a few things — their long-standing involvement in the local Diy scene, their omnivorous approach to otherwise straightforward garage-punk — but their real strength is in making slightly neurotic anthems for ragers. Indebted to the Hold Steady, the Ramones, and Green Day, these songs are the ones that sound best at So So Glos shows. (It helps if you happen to be swigging a Miller High Life.) The band's new song "A.D.D. Life," premiering here, takes this approach to its heights, as front man Alex Levine loses his shit over how we're all too busy and overstimulated to even focus. I'm sure some of us can relate. Levine's stream of consciousness regarding the context: "We were out the door of the scene. Suddenly, I had trouble breathing, trouble concentrating. Blood pressure was High, times were Low. Panic attacked. There were too...

Orphan Black, Ep. 3.05, “Scarred by Many Past Frustrations” brings season three roaring back to life
Orphan Black, Season 3, Episode 5, “Scarred by Many Past Frustrations”
Written by Alex Levine
Directed by David Frazee
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on BBC America
After four episodes bogged down with disparate strands and far more plot than character, “Scarred by Many Past Frustrations” pares down the narrative and in doing so, delivers by far the best episode of season three. It’s no coincidence this upsurge in energy comes the week Alison, Donnie, and their new drug business stay on the bench; with the exception of Cosima’s C storyline, every scene contributes directly to the main thrust of the season and by the end of the episode, even the most seemingly superfluous corners of the show—again, besides Hendrix Pharmaceuticals—gain relevance.
Though much of the season has floundered, Helena’s imprisonment at the hands of Project Castor has been almost uniformly engaging, giving Helena clear motivation and a tangible enemy.

Southland, “Chaos”
Written by Zack Whedon
Directed by Christopher Chulack
Aired April 10th, 2013 on TNT
Forget Hannibal. Forget American Horror Story. Forget “The Rains of Castamere.” You want harrowing? You want soul-crushing blackness with a side of trauma? You want pure, unforgiving narrative nihilism? Try on the penultimate episode of sadly-departed cop drama Southland. Whereas the typical episode hones in on a few plotlines between seven or eight characters, “Chaos” revolves mostly around a single, nightmare-inducing act: the kidnapping of two of our principal characters by a pair of deranged meth-heads. On paper, it sounds like your average “Very Special Episode” of… really, any cop show ever. The “team member(s) get nabbed and have to be rescued by the rest of the team” setup is well-worn territory. “Chaos”, however, is a different beast entirely. Based loosely on a real incident, “Chaos” earns its title honestly, unfolding seemingly without rhyme or reason,...
