Thanks to enhanced security measures, attendees at this year’s Cannes Film Festival have faced only a few hiccups. Even the ongoing war and Israeli hostage situation in Gaza haven’t made headlines during the festival, in stark contrast with the Berlinale.
But one private screening, which was scheduled outside of the festival and market, was canceled abruptly, and attendees were told it was due to a security threat. Details of what happened remain unclear.
On May 17, WestEnd Films co-founder Sharon Harel-Cohen organized a screening of “Bearing Witness” for a small group of industryites who were in town for the festival. The 47-minute film shows raw footage from the Oct. 7 terror attack in southern Israel, some of it captured by body cameras and CCTV. The invitation warned: “The footage is extremely graphic and violent, including videos of murder filmed by Hamas terrorists.” It also noted, “For security reasons the location...

The 2023-2024 Broadway season has been positively packed with an abundance of talent as dozens of new productions danced across New York City stages. The nominating committee for the Tony Awards usually does a great job in selecting the best of the best, thanks to a fair system that requires committee members to see all eligible productions. But given the sheer volume of shows this season, David Buchanan and I thought it best to remind these voters of contenders most in need of recognition.
David and I sat down to stump for 10 Tony Awards hopefuls who find themselves on uncertain ground heading into nominations (plus a few shoutouts to some stellar designers). Watch the full video slugfest above to hear our passionate pleas to the voters on the nominating committee. Hey Tony voter nominators, please don’t forget these incredible artists!

Jim Berk, a veteran executive who formerly served as CEO of Participant Media and currently serves as chairman and CEO of Goodman Media Partners, will become the CEO of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in 2024, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Swc’s board of trustees has chosen Berk to succeed Rabbi Marvin Hier, the charismatic two-time Oscar winner who founded the Jewish human rights activist organization in 1977 and has led it ever since.
“Jim’s passion for the Simon Wiesenthal Center, its mission and his long history of supporting Jewish rights, Zionism and the State of Israel, makes him the right choice at the right time to lead the Center and all of its divisions,” says Hier. “There isn’t a more experienced or capable executive today with the same level of skill set and understanding of the Center’s mission than Jim, and I am delighted to have him lead...

The Beverly Hills Temple of the Arts at the Saban Theatre, the largest arts and entertainment synagogue in the U.S., is offering complimentary seating to striking members of the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA and their immediate families for its High Holy Day Services on Rosh Hashanah (September 15 and 16) and Yom Kippur (September 24 and 25). Tickets for non-Temple members for both services normally cost $500 each.
“As an arts and entertainment industry synagogue, we feel it is our moral duty to support writers and actors in our community and pray for a quick resolution to their current strikes,” said Rabbi David Baron.
Guests for Yom Kippur, Judaism’s holiest day of the year, will include Cristiano J. Zeledón, a former U.S. Marine who will recount how he was wounded during a Russian missile strike in Ukraine while providing volunteer humanitarian aid there; Aron Bell, 96, who will share his story of how he and his late brothers,...

How often do we come across a teen comedy-drama that stays true to the genre and has a smattering of coming-of-age elements in it? Netflix rarely gives us a film that has young children in the lead and makes it about friendship instead of romance and other risqué subjects. You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is a Netflix romance drama film based on the book of the same name by Fiona Rosenbloom. Written by Alison Peck and directed by Sammi Cohen, the movie, released on August 25, 2023, takes us through the lives of a young schoolgirl and her best friend.
The film revolves around two teenage girls: Stacy Friedman and her best friend, Lydia Rodriguez Katz. They have been planning each other’s perfect bat mitzvah for many years in the hope of making it a talking point at their school. For those not in the know, a...

Israel’s far-right national security minister lashed out at supermodel Bella Hadid on Friday for criticizing his recent fiery televised remarks about Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
In an interview earlier this week with Israel’s Channel 12 following two deadly Palestinian attacks on Israelis in the occupied territory, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir argued that his right to freedom of movement as a Jewish settler outweighs the same right for Palestinians.
“My right, the right of my wife and my children, to move around Judea and Samaria is more important than freedom of movement for the Arabs,” Ben-Gvir said Wednesday, using the biblical name for the West Bank. “The right to life comes before freedom of movement.”

When you’re 13 everything carries high stakes: friendships, romances, who you’re seen with, which parties you’re invited to. Nothing has an adequate frame of reference, because everything is so new, and you’re not sure if you’re supposed to handle it all like the kid you just were or the adult you want to be. The new Netflix coming-of-age comedy You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah manages to convey this liminal state in a way that’s both deeply thoughtful and light as a feather.
