Taiwanese screenwriter and director Su Chao Bin wrote this Ming Dynasty wuxia drama primarily for Michelle Yeoh to star in. According to Su and producer Terence Chang, the approach was to do a story in the style of Gu Long's wuxia, populated with multiple characters plus a touch of suspense and mystery. Producer John Woo's input is mainly as an adviser, but he did direct one action scene which featured his daughter and thereby also credited as co-director. Su won the Best Director award for his effort at the 17th Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards.

Ye Lanqiu (Gao Yuanyuan) is a beautiful and successful young woman who, as the film opens, is diagnosed with an advanced lymphatic cancer that requires immediate treatment. Numb with shock, Lanqiu sits on a crowded city bus, hiding behind large sunglasses and completely oblivious to what is happening around her, not even registering the conductor’s persistent request that she give up her seat for an elderly pensioner. This moment of perceived incivility is recorded on a mobile phone by an assistant to journalist Chen Ruoxi (Yao Chen), and the zealous reporter quickly decides to go viral with the video, flooding the web with the footage of the callous “Sunglass Girl”. The video triggers a massive internet hate-mail campaign against the already stricken Lanqiu, and heralds even more catastrophes in both her personal and professional life. But fate is not yet finished with Lanqiu, and the chaotic course she has been unjustly set upon will,...

"Nature doesn't love. Nor does it hate. It simple builds as it destroys." Screen Media Films has debuted an official US trailer for a volcano disaster action movie titled Skyfire, arriving on VOD in January after New Years. This is another of these epic Chinese movies that is made by a western filmmaker, even though it's made by and features a cast of mostly Chinese people. Tianhuo Island is as beautiful as a paradise. It almost makes people forget that it is located in the "Ring of Fire" the world-famous Pacific Rim volcanic belt. The volcano surprisingly erupts again, and it becomes a battle with nature to get off the island while fiery death and destruction rains down from the big mountain. Skyfire stars Jason Isaacs, Xueqi Wang, Hannah Quinlivan, Shayn Dou, Liang Shi, and Alice Rietveld. This looks a lot like Skyscraper, a very similar disaster plot setup with...

In the years since, Xiao Meng has grown up and pursued her own journey as a volcanologist, continuing the work started by her parents. Rogue One: A Star Wars story is a film that certainly has quite the task ahead of it. Though the stakes aren't quite as high as they were with last year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the film does have to accomplish a couple of key things. First, it has to be of a certain quality so that it doesn't make The Force Awakens look like a complete fluke, and second, it has to firmly establish itself as a unique beast from the main saga so that mainstream audiences will know what to expect from future anthology films.
With the mostly-positive response to the recent trailers, they seem to be on their way, but not all audiences are convinced, namely the Chinese audience. According to THR, Rogue One is currently facing a mixed response from the Chinese, mainly in regards to the casting of Donnie Yen and Jiang Wen. While...

For movie studios with big blockbusters to sell, it would be fair to say that market saturation has become something of a problem. Films, particularly English language films, are a global business, with simultaneous release dates around the globe now very much the exception rather than the norm. Furthermore, declines in American box office takings have been comfortably offset in recent times by burgeoning receipts outside the Us.
Take, for instance, Sony's Spider-Man films. Since the release of Sam Raimi's original movie in 2002, each of the subsequent webslinger adventures has taken less and less at the American box office. The takings outside of the States? The general trend has been more positive than that.

Oliver Stone was characteristically outspoken on the second day of the Beijing International Film Festival (Bjiff), challenging China to rethink international co-productions and start making films that examine its past.
Speaking at the Sino-Foreign Film Co-production Forum, Stone said, “most international co-productions are bullshit”, due to their bad acting and casting, as expecting actors to use a second language usually doesn’t work.
“The international ballgame has gotten bigger and bigger with films like Iron Man 3 and Transformers,” Stone said, referring to the trend of incorporating Chinese elements into studio pictures. “I hope they use China well. But using Chinese actors in the background because you want money is not an artistic approach.”
Stone also said he’s “run into a wall” three times trying to make films in China about Mao Tse-tung, the Cultural Revolution and a documentary around the Beijing Olympics. “Three times I’ve made real efforts to coproduce and come up short...

Once Upon a Time, in the Digital Age…: Chen’s Latest a Message Heavy Oddity
A critique of the hounding one sidedness of the omnipresent media mixed with a heavy swirl of romance and melodrama dictates Chen Kaige’s latest feature, Caught in the Web, an oddly flat critique of the life and times in which we live, especially considering the controversy courting director’s past work, including his much hailed Farewell, My Concubine (1993). Despite dealing with modern issues of modern technological advances further mutating and bastardizing notions of journalism in a sensational driven news medium, Kaige’s film peculiarly feels out of touch, a generational rift in attitude and communication, or something that thinks it’s a bright critique of “the youth today” in a world still spinning swiftly out of control. While performances and visual aesthetics are engaging, there’s a definite shortage of narrative cohesiveness, and...

Chinese director Chen Kaige is a veteran filmmaker and no stranger to U.S. fans of foreign language cinema. He’s been directing features since 1985 and even scored two Oscar nominations for his 1993 film, Farewell My Concubine. His career since has been somewhat eclectic with the standouts being a handful of epic period pieces (The Emperor and the Assassin, The Promise, Sacrifice) filled with martial arts, doomed romance, and gorgeous visuals. The less said about his singular foray into Hollywood the better. His latest film sees a young woman lost in her own issues unknowingly cause an incident that rattles the fragile social mores of those around her. Her transgression goes viral, streaming across the airwaves and internet, and while it marks her as a pariah, it also sets in motion a chain of events in the lives of several other people. A single act, a multitude of ramifications. Caught In the Web races into the present...

Striking an awkward balance between cornball message-making melodrama and kooky mistaken-circumstance comedy, Caught in the Web finds director Chen Kaige (Farewell My Concubine, The Emperor and the Assassin) vainly stumbling about in search of a tone or point.

Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou returns with “The Rooftop”, his second outing as director following his successful and surprisingly accomplished 2007 debut “Secret”. A long while in development, the film is an ambitious affair, a musical filled with songs, dancing, romance, martial arts and more, with the actor-singer not only starring and directing, but having written the script and composed the soundtrack. Although Chou takes the lead, the film is an ensemble piece of sorts, and also stars newcomer Li Xin Ai as his love interest, along with Alan Kuo, Darren Chiu, and veterans Eric Tsang, Wang Xueqi and Kenny Bee. The film revolves around Jay Chou as Wax, who along with his gang of goodhearted roustabouts hangs around the titular rooftop overlooking the city of Galilee, doing odd jobs for Chinese medicine shop owner Bo (Eric Tsang). Steven Spielberg is once again king of the box office, but in a very unexpected way. While "Lee Daniels' The Butler" may have taken the top spot for the weekend domestically, "Jurassic Park 3D" was the number one film around the world.
The movie's 3D release was able to take in $30 million in ticket sales over the weekend, almost entirely due to its debut in China, which raked in $28.8 million. The country is becoming more of a power in the film world, as the audience grows bigger and embraces new 3D and projecting technology.

People in China were even treated to a special cut of "Iron Man 3" in May, with extra scenes filmed specifically for a release in the country. The movie's additional scenes featured Chinese actors Wang Xueqi and Fan Bingbing.

Having topped box offices around the world to become the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time, Iron Man 3 is just weeks away from arriving on the shelves with its home entertainment release next month.
And with its new release imminent, a couple of the special features have debuted online, with USA Today getting a deleted scene involving the Mandarin and Eric Savin, and Yahoo Movies getting a gag reel centred on Tony Stark himself, Robert Downey, Jr.
Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him.

The website, comicbooktherapy (via AidarSM), has posted a deleted scene from the Chinese cut of Iron Man 3, that features Fan Bingbing and Wang Xueqi. Now, the nearly three-minute clip is in Chinese, so if you don't speak the language you can always turn off the sound and have fun creating your own dialogue. Or, for the more ambitious geeks out there you could pick up Rosetta Stone and learn a new language. Or, maybe you have a friend that can translate Chinese. Either way, enjoy the clip. Chinese superstar Li Bingbing has been added to the cast of Michael Bay’s Transformers 4. Considering much of the film’s production is taking place in China, this makes a lot of sense, and is a lot like Marvel’s Iron Man 3′s casting of Wang Xueqi and Fan Bingbing.
Here’s how Bay announced it: “I am excited to have Li Bingbing join our cast and to be shooting portions of the movie in her native China. I have always aspired to work with the best actors and this cast is especially exciting now with the addition of Li.”
The full cast for the 4th film is now Li Bingbing, Mark Wahlberg, Jack Reynor, Nicola Peltz, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer and Sophia Myles. The movie is aiming for a June 27th, 2014 release date.

Given the unseemly, on-their-knees groveling nature of Hollywood when it comes to the Chinese market these days, you’ll excuse me for not getting all that excited by this news that Chinese actress Bingbing Li has nabbed a role in Michael Bay’s upcoming “Transformers 4″. I only need remind you of Xueqi Wang and Bingbing Fan’s roles in Shane Black’s “Iron Man 3″. Those two roles were much ballyhooed, but as it turns out, Wang only appeared in a blink-and-you’ll-miss cameo in the International cut of the film, with only Chinese audiences in China getting a few extra minutes with Wang and Fan that, frankly, were so haphazardly shoehorned into the movie it provoked more embarrassment from the Chinese audiences that saw it than pride, which was obviously what everyone (including a very complicit Marvel) was going for. We already know that Bay and Paramount have...

Much has already been written, both on these pages and many others, about the landmark Hollywood-China co-production that is Marvel and Dmg Entertainment's Iron Man 3. The film, directed by Shane Black, is the third solo outing for Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark, and has proved a phenomenal success around the world. As it closes in on $1 billion at the global box office, the film is on the cusp of breaking $100 million in China, despite the fact that the producers withdrew their application for official co-production status at the eleventh hour. We knew ahead of time that the mainland release of Iron Man 3 would feature exclusive footage, filmed in China with homegrown stars Wang Xueqi and Fan Bingbing, But what exactly would these...

Marvel hero's latest outing becomes the second most successful comic-book film in history after outstripping The Dark Knight
Iron Man 3 has passed the $1bn mark at the global box office, less than four weeks after it first hit cinemas.
The superhero sequel has also become the second highest-grossing comic book film of all time after passing The Dark Knight, which pulled in $1.004bn in 2008. Starring Robert Downey Jr in what has become the actor's signature role as Iron Man/Tony Stark, Shane Black's film will now take aim at its predecessor in Marvel Studios' series of superhero movies, last year's The Avengers.
Joss Whedon's ensemble outing, which featured Iron Man alongside the Hulk, Captain America and Thor, made it to $1bn in just 19 days and eventually racked up $1.5bn, the third highest gross of all time. By contrast, Iron Man 3 reached the figure in 24 days.

Marvel's "Iron Man 3" stomped its way through the box office last weekend, raking in $175 million in North America in its first three days alone and more than $680 million internationally in less than two weeks. These were huge numbers, even for a superhero flick, second only to last summer's blockbuster of blockbusters, "The Avengers" (another Marvel product). It was a sound conclusion to the Iron Man trilogy, with a well-pitched sardonic tone, a thoughtful had-ya-fooled plot twist, and an enjoyably bombastic set piece finale. And, of course, there were the cameos. Remember Dr. Wu, the medical genius played by Wang Xueqi who was the only doctor who could un-Iron Man Tony Stark at the end of the film? And Fan Bingbing, who excitedly proclaimed, "He's here!" when Stark arrived at the hospital? Alas, if you were one of the many who flocked to see "Iron Man 3" in theaters across the U.

According to Dmg Entertainment, the Beijing-based co-producers of "Iron Man 3", Chinese actor Xueqi Wang, who plays 'Dr. Wu' in the Marvel Studios' production, will 'save face' and receive his own short film titled "The Prologue", after being edited out of the international cut of "Iron Man 3" and most of the Chinese version as well.
The film will reportedly feature the full cut of scenes which included the actor meeting a young 'Tony Stark' in the 1990's, a telephone conversation he later has with the super-computer 'J.A.R.V.I.S.', as well as a scene where he conducts surgery to remove Stark's 'arc reactor'.

After “Iron Man 3” diehard fans apparently lost their minds when they heard that there were scenes exclusive to Chinese theaters that they might never get to see stateside, the powers that be decided to turn those “lost” scenes into a short film focusing on a character who only gets 10 seconds of onscreen time in the U.S. cut. This short film, dubbed “The Prologue,” will be about Dr. Wu (played by Chinese actor Wang Xueqi). Approximately three minutes long, the short film will delve more into a character we didn’t get too familiar with in the first place (and that’s if we didn’t blink). There is no word yet on whether “The Prologue” will get a standalone release (mayber on the internet?) or will be part of the additional features of the eventual “Iron Man 3” DVD/Blu-ray. This is not the first time a film...

The additional three minutes of footage from the Chinese release of "Iron Man 3" will be incorporated into an upcoming Marvel short film currently titled "The Prologue".
While no plans are yet set, it seems very likely that it will be featured on the future Blu-ray/DVD release of "Iron Man 3."
The extra scenes were produced exclusively for the version of "Iron Man 3" shown in Chinese theaters and mostly revolve around the character of Dr. Wu (Wang Xueqi) seen briefly in the opening sequence of the U.S. version.
Scenes include Dr. Wu having a telephone conversation with Jarvis, and a scene where he performs surgery on Tony Stark.

In order to get money from China to make "Iron Man 3," Marvel had to include scenes featuring Chinese actors in Chinese settings. When the film was released, it became clear that the studio did the minimum to meet the requirements by adding scenes that don't add anything to the story. The scenes were so pointless that Marvel kept them only for screenings in China and cut them for everywhere else. To make it worse, a scene featuring Iron Man launching into the sky in front of Dr. Wu (Want Xueqi) and a group of cheering children was not only in the Chinese cut of the film, but appeared only in a sequence shown on a television set playing in the background of Dr. Wu's office. Now comes word that the rest of the world will get a chance to see those scenes since the studio is planning to combine them into a short film,...

For those of you who are waiting to see those additional Chinese scenes from Iron Man 3, you'll be happy to know that Marvel is planning on releasing a short film that features them. It will also include other scenes that were shot not featured in either of the films.
From what I've heard, the scenes are nothing to get excited about, which is kind of a shame. It was previously reported that Chinese actor Wang Xueqi said he only agreed to be in Iron Man 3 because he was told his character would have weight in the film and would be “the one who saves Tony Stark’s life.” An argument can be made that he did, but I'm sure not in the way he was thinking. Maybe they will be able to cut together an interesting short from the scenes.

Before the release of Iron Man 3 last week, news surfaced that China would be getting their own cut of the film featuring extended scenes utilizing the country's actors Wang Xueqi and Fan Bingbing. While their characters appeared only about 10 seconds in the cut of the film in the rest of the world, they were given three minutes of screentime in China's cut. Xueqi played Dr. Wu, and in the special cut, meets Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in the opening flashback in 1999, having a conversation with Jarvis, and then he shows up towards the end of the film to heal Stark's injuries with acupuncture aided surgery. More below! Meanwhile, Bingbing played the doctor's assistant. Well, apparently the actors and the Chinese production company Dmg Entertainment, who worked with Marvel on the Chinese aspects of the film, are not happy about the final cut. While Xueqi was told that his...

With a rapidly expanding cinema audience, the biggest new films are being adapted for what is now the second largest box office in the world
There's a lesson to be learned from new teen comedy 21 & Over, though the abstract of that lesson will largely depend on where you see it. Catch it on one of the 300-odd UK screens it opened across yesterday, and witness a jocular salute to the redemptive power of youth, rebellion and getting fucked-up. Hold out for the film's debut in China later this month and you're in for an altogether more moralistic experience.
Along with a growing band of Hollywood innovators, the producers of 21 & Over have worked closely with the Chinese government to produce an alternate cut for their audiences, one in which the film's hero is refashioned as a Chinese exchange student who ultimately shakes off the rank delinquency of American college life and returns home a reformed character.

Like many other films, "Iron Man 3" was partially funded by China. As a result, Marvel had to make sure to include Chinese actors, Chinese dialogue and Chinese settings in the movie. The studio accomplished all that, but then cut most of the Chinese content out of the film for Us audiences. In other words, the Chinese version is longer, containing footage that the rest of the world won't see. THR now provided a break-down of the footage, which is nothing more than throw-away scenes, meaningless characters and production placement. Scene 1: A question appears on screen, asking: "What does Iron Man rely on to revitalize his energy?" After three seconds of black-screen, the words "Gu Li Duo" were shown. Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 has topped the global box office this weekend, taking the #1 spot in every single one of the 42 markets it opened in, racking up just shy of $200m.
Needless to say, it’s on track for a huge weekend as it opens in North America this weekend, with projections estimating it will be the highest-grossing domestic release of the year so far.

Internet users in China who have seen international cut of new superhero movie dismayed at lack of airtime for Chinese stars and China-set sequences
It was billed as a joint venture between two cinematic superpowers, a collaboration between east and west. But the comic-book blockbuster Iron Man 3 has now been split into two distinct entities. The version playing to audiences in China will contain Chinese characters and Chinese sequences. The official international version, by and large, will not.
The change has not gone unobserved by some film fans in China, with a handful of bloggers crying foul over locally-shot scenes that failed to find their way into the version released to the rest of the world.
Disney-owned Marvel Studios announced in March that the version playing to audiences in China would contain Chinese superstars such as Wang Xueqi and Fan Bingbing, as well as sequences shot in China. Yet some are still angered.
