Ann Crumb, the stage’s Aspects of Love star who became the first American actress chosen by Andrew Lloyd Webber to originate a starring role, died yesterday of ovarian cancer at her parents’ home in Pennsylvania. She was 69.
Her death, which followed a nearly five-year battle with the disease, was announced by her press spokesman Kevin McAnarney.
The musical theater actress and singer created numerous leading roles on Broadway and London’s West End, including roles in The Goodbye Girl, Nine, Les Miserables, Chess, and, in a 1992 Broadway performance that earned her a Best Actress Tony Award nomination, Anna Karenina.
Lloyd Webber had personally chosen Crumb, born in Charleston, West Virginia, to originate the lead role of Rose Vibert when his musical Aspects of Love opened in London in 1989 and on Broadway a year later. She would also star opposite John Cullum in the National tour of Man Of La Mancha...

Orchestras are indie rock’s new Marshall stacks. That’s fitting on a lot of levels — as a satisfying class-action appropriation of elitist cultural tropes, as a deconstruction of those same tropes, and as an elevation of collectivism over American myths of individualism and exceptionalism that’ve lately been twisted into such ugly shapes. Also: done right, orchestrations just sound dope. There’s plenty of ‘em done right on Angel Olsen’s latest, All Mirrors, her best record yet in an excellent ouevre, giving her goth-folk drama queen tendencies room to roam far and wide.

Sam Green has been making documentaries for over two decades and, to hear him tell it, he’s really hitting his stride right about now. For the past few years, the filmmaker has produced live event documentaries in which he will narrate the action in person and on stage while music is played and media is presented on a screen above.
His most recent endeavor is A Thousand Thoughts, written and directed by himself and Joe Bini. The subject here is the Kronos Quartet, the accomplished music group that’s been around since 1973, founded by violinist David Harrington. While you may know their work best from their collaborations with Clint Mansell (who can forget the score from Requiem For A Dream?), they’ve done so much more.

When I was growing up, New York 's best (now long-defunct) classical radio station, Wncn, played only American composers' music each Fourth of July. With the classical world dominated by Europeans, this was a welcome and educational corrective. In the history of American music, independence wasn't achieved until the 20th century; 19th century composers such as John Knowles Paine and George Whitefield Chadwick studied in Europe and blatantly imitated European models. Listening to their music "blind," few would guess they were Americans. There was Revolutionary War-era vocal writer William Billings, but his originality was more a lack of proper technique. Continuing Wncn's tradition, here's a look at true American classical. music.
There is a bit of chauvinism in this article, as "American" here refers not to all the Americas (North, Central, and South) but rather the colloquial usage in the United States to mean that country's residents (hence, the Mexican Carlos Chavez,...

Director James Wan, writer Leigh Whannell and producer Oren Peli are responsible for two of the most successful horror franchises (Saw, Paranormal Activity) in recent memory. In teaming up to make Insidious, an original horror film, they’ve created something of an event for horror-philes. Sitting down with all three of them for an interview only offers a taste of what it must have been like on set. Nevertheless, in support of their new film (check out my review here), which made its U.S. premiere at SXSW, the filmmakers talked franchises, on-screen violence, genre elements and much, much more.
Tfs: Leigh, how did the project come about?
Leigh Whannell: The project came about because the producers of Paranormal Activity, Jason Blum and Steven Schneider and Oren Peli, who also directed it, had formed a company in the wake of it. I guess it’s almost required of you...
