The 57th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival got off to a banging start on Friday evening as free opening concerts by Russell Crowe — with his musical collective Indoor Garden Party — and British electronic music band Morcheeba got crowds rocking and grooving in the square in front of the picturesque Czech spa town’s Hotel Thermal.
Morcheeba fans came out in droves in the early evening despite some rain, cheering and moving along to such hits as opening number “The Sea” and “Trigger Hippie.” The performance followed the fest’s opening ceremony and seemed to put the town into party mode.
After Morcheeba’s appearance, anticipation started building for the late music act. Just before 11 p.m., Crowe arrived on stage, with a drink cup in hand, where he was greeted with loud cheers and applause. Earlier in the evening he had received the Crystal Globe for outstanding...

The 2023 edition of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival opens Friday night with some A-list firepower. Ewan McGregor and Alicia Vikander will be in the Czech spa town to collect special honors, while Russell Crowe is attending for a career retrospective and to receive the Crystal Globe lifetime achievement award. Crowe will also be performing on the opening night along with his band The Gentlemen Barbers.
But there’ll also be another musical act set to play June 30 at the opening concert, one that’s perhaps a little more established than the Gladiator star (no disrespect, Russell).
English band Morcheeba have been fine-tuning their downtempo, electronic vibes since forming in the mid-1990s, moving from trip hop origins into more pop-based, hip-hop-infused soul waters, most notably with the 1998 breakout album Big Calm and 2000’s follow-up, Fragments of Freedom. More than two decades on and the band — now made up of two...

The plot of Steven Soderbergh's new film, Side Effects, sets into motion when an ER shrink (Jude Law) is assigned a patient (Rooney Mara) who has crashed her car in an apparent suicide attempt. From there, the movie shifts and twists. What begins as realist portraiture transforms into legal drama before turning into a cat-and-mouse corporate thriller.
The film is Soderbergh's fourth in 18 months—and will also reportedly his final theatrically-released feature. An HBO production, the Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra, will premiere later this year. After that, Soderbergh—who recently turned 50—claims that he will retire from film directing.
Since bursting on to the international stage with his Palme d'Or-winning debut feature, sex, lies, and videotape (1989), Soderbergh has produced a vast and profoundly eclectic body of work which includes blockbusters, low-budget experiments, and everything in between.
