Cartoonist Jeff Smith, beloved for his popular indie comic book epic “Bone,” suffered a heart attack this past Sunday and has canceled his book tour for the remainder of this year. The news about Smith, 63, was first shared by representatives from Smith’s own Cartoon Books publishing company, including Smith’s wife.
“Jeff Smith is recuperating from a cardiac arrest, which he suffered on Sunday. There will be a long road to recovery, so regrettably we must cancel the remainder of his book tour this year,” Cartoon Books production manager Kathleen Glosan shared on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
Jeff Smith is possibly the greatest cartoonist working in the Western world today; immense love to Jeff and Vijaya at what must be a very scary time https://t.co/gP45MemN2i

Stories about old people who are happy and content being old, who stoutly resist fantastic temptations otherwise, are I think always the products of much younger people. Actual old people are much less sanguine about looming death, I find, less likely to smile indulgently at mantlepiece pictures of themselves in their younger days, sigh contentedly, and turn their faces away from mysterious elixirs and fabulous potions.
Neil Gaiman was barely thirty when he wrote the short story “Chivalry” in the early 1990s. It’s a light, mostly humorous story. But it’s very much the humor of someone quite young looking at someone else who is quite old, at a light, humorous distance.
Chivalry was turned into a graphic novel recently – just about a year ago – by Colleen Doran, who apparently scripted this version as well as doing all of the art in a variety of styles. (Lettering is by Todd Klein.

I’ve mentioned the short story “Snow, Glass, Apples” before – it’s both one of Neil Gaiman’s best, most pointed short pieces and one of the most successful of the Ellen Datlow/Terri Windling-inspired burst of revisionist fairy tales from the early 1990s.
As so often with successful things, it’s part of different clusters – all those anthologies of nasty fairy tales, first, and then more recently an odd program that seems to be trying to turn every one of Gaiman’s best stories into individual graphic novels. (See How to Talk to Girls at Parties and Troll Bridge ; I’m pretty sure there have been several others that I missed.)
So, in 2019, Colleen Doran adapted “Snow, Glass, Apples” (the short story) into the standalone graphic novel Snow, Glass, Apples – which is what I’ve just read. Like most of the “Neil Gaiman Library” and similar projects that I’ve seen,...

This The Sandman review contains No Spoilers and is based on all 10 episodes of the first season of the show.
After decades of failed or blocked film adaptations of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, Netflix has finally broken through with a new 10-episode series, released on Aug. 5.
And it was all worth the wait. The Sandman is spectacular.
The series, adapted for television by Allan Heinberg, David Goyer, and Gaiman himself, follows Dream of the Endless as he is captured by a human warlock and held in captivity for 100 years. He escapes captivity and returns to his realm, The Dreaming, to rebuild and reorient himself, and that process leads to personal growth and deeper relationships with his subjects and his siblings.

Prepare to start seeing Morpheus in your dreams, because "The Sandman" finally arrives on Friday. The Netflix show follows Dream of the Endless, who is the living embodiment of dreams and master of the Dreaming itself. Like most of us, his relationship with his family is complicated, especially since his siblings happen to be Destiny, Death, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium. The series is based on the seminal comic of the same name by Neil Gaiman and a host of incredible artists including Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg, Colleen Doran, Jill Thompson, and Marc Hempel, among many others.

No, seriously, he’s a book fanatic.
Besides helping millions of kids fall in love with reading, Burton has written several books of his own, including novels and children’s books such as, “The Rhino That Swallowed the Storm.” He’s also narrated books for other authors, hosted public book readings via the “LeVar Burton Reads” podcast,...

Wonder Woman has had quite the renaissance in recent years, and as one of the Big Three (with Superman and Batman) it is thoroughly deserved. You don’t get continually published since 1941 unless you have something that clicks with readers after all. She first appeared in All-Star Comics #8 in 1941, graduated to her own book with Sensation Comics #1 in 1942, and has never looked back since. She has gone through several’ fad’ phases down the years, such as the depowered white jump suit era (yikes), and has sometimes struggled with getting enough readers to pick up her book. Historically, though, having a female character they are trying to aim at girls but written by middle aged men, doesn’t really work, and also ends up alienating the male audience. Most self respecting teenage boys back in the day wouldn’t pick up...

It’s not easy being the greatest female icon in the history of American comic books but, even after more than seven decades on the job, the Amazon princess they call Wonder Woman handles that burden with noble grace and singular determination.
That’s one way to interpret the striking, just-released cover artwork for the upcoming, 96-page, prestige-format, 750th issue of Wonder Woman from Burbank-based publisher DC Comics. The milestone issue will hit shelves at brick-and-mortar retailers on January 22, the same day it lands on the virtual spinner racks of online retailers.
The image evokes the Hellenic imagery of mighty Atlas hefting the world on his Titan shoulder and it was illustrated by Catwoman writer/artist Joëlle Jones, just one of the many DC stars who made contributions to commemorative issue.
Announced interior artists include Colleen Doran, Jesus Merino, Elena Casagrade, Gabriel Picolo, and Wonder Woman Rebirth illustrator Nicola Scott.

Wonder Woman #750 features an all-star lineup of talent.
Action Comics and Detective Comics went back to legacy numbering for huge milestones. In January, the Trinity is complete, as it's Wonder Woman's turn.
DC announced a giant anniversary issue - Wonder Woman #750 - coming January 22nd. It will be a 96 page comic, and like Action Comics and Detective Comics #1000, it will be a bit of a short story jam session. However, unlike those two thousandth issues, Wonder Woman #750 mixes in some newer talent to go with the classic Diana creators who are almost fundamentally required by the universe to be in here.
The book will feature new stories from Greg Rucka and Gail Simone, arguably the two most accomplished and important Wonder Woman writers still making comics today. Rucka wrote Diana's Rebirth arc that brought her up to date in the new continuity in addition to fleshing out...

DC Comics' "The Vampire Diaries" comic book series, debuting in 2013, ran for 39 issues, adapting The CW TV series, featuring stories by B. Clay Moore, Colleen Doran, Leah Moore and John Reppion:

The romance of monkeys in tin cans continues to elude me. It was one of my pet peeves back when I was working at the Sfbc — an endless stream of stories, all by men (it was always men) who imprinted on an Apollo launch early, with another piece of special pleading about how Man was Destined to Go To The Stars because it was His Destiny Goshdarnit and We Can’t Put All Our Eggs In One Basket and The Frontier Breeds Real Men and Man Must Go Ever Onward and similar piffle.
I thought I’d left that all behind a decade ago when I was cast out of paradise lost my Sf job, and that was one of the few bright spots of the transition. [1]
But I still read Sf, some of the time. And those same guys — mostly my generation, more’s the pity, so I can...

I didn’t remember Neil Gaiman’s story “Troll Bridge” well. In fact, if you’d asked me about it, I would have assumed some confusion on your part with Terry Pratchett’s short story “Troll Bridge,” and tried to lead you in that direction.
But story titles can’t be copyrighted, and even good friends can use the same ones without stress or strife. I’d forgotten it, but Gaiman did also write a story titled “Troll Bridge,” originally for the Datlow/Windling anthology Snow White, Rose Red in 1993 and collected a number of times since then. And, since Gaiman has a huge audience in comics that might not be as familiar with his just-prose works — or, at least, there are publishers willing to bet that’s the case — a number of his short stories have been turning into short graphic novels from Dark Horse over the past few years.

Director: Marisa Stotter; Featuring: Karen Berger, Gail Simone, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Jenette Kahn, Becky Cloonan, Colleen Doran, Wendi Pini, Kate Leth, Raina Telgemeier, Marjorie Liu, Louise Simonson, Heidi MacDonald; Running time: 110 mins
The issues faced by women in comics are perennial but have been particularly visible in recent years - whether it is in terms of people speaking out about poor treatment, creators and fans saying appalling things or, on better days, representation and inclusion actually improving in the industry.
There's a whole lot to say on the matter, and today (December 9) director Marisa Stotter's documentary She Makes Comics has arrived to have its say.
The film has done a fantastic job of representing the new and old guard of comics, with interviewees including Jenette Kahn, Louise Simonson, Colleen Doran, Wendi Pini, Kate Leth, Becky Cloonan, Raina Telgemeier, Marjorie Liu, journalist Heidi MacDonald and many more.

I may be behind the eight-ball here, but last month much blogging, Facebook and Tumblr posts and Twitter accounts were ablaze with comics artist Tess Fowler’s account of sexual harassment at the 2007 San Diego Comic Convention – a comics pro used the age-old pretense of being interested in her work to try and get her to come up to his room, and when Tess declined, he then went about insulting her work, her cosplay and talking bullshit about her to other male comics professionals and anybody else who would listen on the convention floor, i.e., in public.
Yeah, I know I’ve written about this subject before, and so has Heidi MacDonald over at The Beat, Colleen Doran on her own blog, former Dark Horse editor Rachel Edidin on her Tumblr site Postcards From Space, Jill Pantozzi at The Mary Sue, and Corrina Lawson on her site, Geek Mom.

Get ready for a whole new way to feed your Salvatore addiction, folks! Starting Thursday, DC Comics will begin releasing chapters of a digital comic based on The Vampire Diaries. "The first issue is going into the mythology behind vervain," previews Colleen Doran, who's writing the tales on an alternating schedule with fellow comic-book contributor B. Clay Moore. "I've always wondered how they got all of the vervain out of Mystic Falls...it's a really common plant, what happened? Since there's never been an explanation, I came up with one."

Main Cover: Nicola Scott
Variants: Amanda Connor, Fiona Staples, Jenny Frison, Colleen Doran
Publisher: Dynamite Comics
When people first start reading comics, they tend to gravitate towards certain characters with which they share a familiarity with. You’ve heard of Spider-Man, so why not read a Spider-Man comic and so on. Yet the deeper a reader delves within the comic world, one tends to leave the comfy confines of character and ventures out into the world of the creator. Creators are those unique individuals who’ve done wonders with the characters you know, that you have no choice but to see what they are going to cook up next.

As we’ve seen in the previous installments of “Clive Barker in Comics,” the author’s short story collection Books of Blood provided a lot of fertile ground for comic book creators. Eclipse published several volumes of comics adapting those short stories, getting a lot of mileage out of one corner of Barker’s overall body of work. It’s interesting, then, that one single novella of Barker’s has gone on to generate much more in the way of adaptations and extensions than the entire contents of Books of Blood. The Hellbound Heart originally appeared in Night Visions 3 (1986), one of a series of collections edited by George R. R. Martin. It’s since become arguably the defining work of Clive Barker’s career: it’s been reprinted in a multitude of mass market and limited stand alone editions, spawned the Hellraiser film series, and became the basis for that...

I like anthology comics. For one thing, that’s how the comic book medium started – single-character comics didn’t really start until about six years down the road. For another, the anthology format reinvented comics with 2000Ad back in the mid-1970s. Today, the anthology format is all but gone, with the notable – and highly laudable – exception of Dark Horse Presents, Creator-Owned Comics and a handful of others.
I like electronic publishing in general and electronic comics publishing in specific. I am a well-known advocate of the movement, at least in my own mind. Well before e-comics became real, I had a debate with my pal and oft-time co-conspirator Mark Wheatley, one of the most innovative and hardest-working people in the known universe. Mark advocated the potential of e-comics expanding the medium by incorporating effects that would move the medium past the boundaries imposed by print. Whereas I agreed with that position,...

Neil Gaiman and Colleen Doran will reunite at Dark Horse Comics. The pair are collaborating on an untitled graphic novel, Doran has revealed while discussing her pencilling technique on her blog. The artist previously worked with Gaiman on his legendary series The Sandman. "My pencil technique is exactly the opposite of what they teach now in art school," Doran wrote. "I do not use the side of the pencil, or graphite. I use the sharp tip of the pencil, and build up everything from hundreds of strokes. This is the way old masters drew back in the day with silverpoint. "It's a look (more)...

Below are some concept sketches that artist Colleen Doran did for J Michael Straczynski. The art, she says, was suppose to have a fantasy feel to it. The concept didn't stick but Colleen posted the sketches on her official web site. From Colleen Doran:Some time ago, after J Michael Straczynski’s new version of Wonder Woman was first released, Jms asked me to do some concept sketches for a more fantasy-oriented version of the character. I know this will set the internet into a tizzy, but this was more rumination than reality. I was not asked to draw a series, just to do some concept sketches. It is very unlikely any of these sketches will be used for anything. So whether you like ‘em or hate ‘em, be aware that concept sketches are meant for brainstorming, and we do not censor our brainstorms. You put it on the paper,...

Artist Colleen Doran and writer Barry Lyga will team up on a new graphic novel. Mangaman is a "metafictive" story aimed at young adults that blurs the line between fiction and reality. "Ryoko, a manga character from a manga world, falls through the Rip into the 'real' world - the Western world - and tries to survive as the ultimate outsider at a typical American high school," wrote Lyga on his website. "When Ryoko falls in love with Marissa Montaigne, the most beautiful girl in the school, his eyes turn to hearts and the comic tension tightens as his way (more)...
