Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the Film Festival Cologne will be one of the first major festivals in Europe to take place entirely physically as the coronavirus continues to wane in Germany. It runs Oct. 1-8.
Launched in 1991 as the Cologne Conference, as it was known until 2016, the international film and television festival celebrates some of the year’s best feature films, series and documentaries.
This year’s Best of Cinema Fiction selections include Todd Haynes’ environmental drama “Dark Waters,” starring Mark Ruffalo, and Josephine Decker’s biopic “Shirley,” featuring Elisabeth Moss as novelist Shirley Jackson. Thomas Vinterberg’s “Another Round” (pictured) is also among the films making its way to Cologne via the festival circuit.
Among the works being presented in Top Ten TV are the BBC series “Trigonometry,” which follows a young married couple in London whose life takes a turn for the better when they take in a flatmate; and “Parlement,...

Berlin -- German media festival and confab the Cologne Conference has added a new section focusing on independent cinema.
The Independent section will screen indie films from around the world as German premieres.
Cologne Conference director Martina Richter said the new section filled a need among the Cologne festival audience.
"The audience has been demanding more independent films, films that, in Germany, one sees either very late or not at all," Richter said.
The new sidebar will run alongside the Cologne Conference's TopTen section, featuring international TV and film highlights from the past year, as well as the Look section, which focuses on productions with an unusual visual aesthetic.
The 2009 Cologne Conference runs Sept. 30 – Oct. 4. The Hollywood Reporter is the festival's media partner and will again this year present The Hollywood Reporter Award honoring innovation in the German media industry, at a gala awards ceremony Oct. 3.

Cologne, Germany -- U.S. TV will take center stage at this year’s Cologne Conference, Germany’s leading television festival/confab (Oct. 8-13).
U.S. productions dominate the Cologne Conference lineup with six of the festivals Top Ten section made in the U.S., including HBO’s “The Flight of the Conchords,” the FBI drama “Fringe” from Warner Bros. TV and A&E’s sci-fi miniseries “The Andromeda Strain.”
“We’ve had years where we couldn’t find any U.S. series but U.S. drama is on the ascent now,” Cologne Conference organizer Martina Richter told THR. “The writing and storytelling, the production value, the issues addressed make U.S. shows simply the best in the world right now.”

COLOGNE, Germany -- "Back to the Roots" could be the motto of this year's Cologne Conference, the international television festival that runs Sept. 26-Oct. 2.
Previous events had focused on the byzantine worlds of digital TV technology and European media policy.
But in its 17th year, the Cologne Conference returns to its core strengths: presenting and discussing the best in television programming from around the world.
The shift comes in part from organizers' decision to break free from German state media confab the Medienforum NRW in June and "re-launch" the Cologne Conference in late September to coincide with the German TV awards on Sept. 29.
"It's a relief to get back to focus solely on content, on the best new television that's out there," said Martina Richter, co-head of Cologne Conference organizer HMR International. "This is what the industry has been telling us they want: one event where they can see the absolute best new series and formats."
Among the programs picked for this year's Cologne Conference Top 10 lineup are NBC Universal Television hit "Heroes", grifter satire "The Riches" from FX Network and Granada Television's suburban drama "The Street", which will open the confab with a gala premiere Wednesday.
This year's event also includes a new "top 10" sidebar called Look, for innovative productions from across the media spectrum -- from feature films to Internet postings.
