Exclusive: London-based documentary specialist Dogwoof has acquired international sales rights to Mstyslav Chernov’s documentary feature 20 Days in Mariupol following its award-winning bow at Sheffield DocFest.
The doc picked up the Tim Hetherington Award at Sheffield, the latest award it has clinched during its expansive festival run. The film debuted at Sundance, where it won the Audience Award for World Cinema Documentary. A co-production between The Associated Press and Frontline, the doc also won Best Film at DocuDays, Best Director at DocEdge, and filmmakers Chernov, Vasilisa Stepanenko, Evgeniy Maloletka, and Lori Hinnant won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service reporting for their work on the doc.

The last year has been a chastening one for television, with budgets nosediving and streamers pulling back on the mega-spending of yesteryear to offset financial disappointments. But the investment in eye-catching doc series has continued despite the threat of global recession, and the unscripted market now finds itself at a crossroads as it splinters into expensive, premium fare and low-budget, high-volume returners.
“There’s still big appetite from commissioners,” says one prominent UK doc maker, while a German-based factual producer adds, “What’s being sold are very commercial projects – bankable names and directors.”
Dogwoof Head of Sales Cleo Veger believes there’s a bigger divide than ever between the sales of lower-budget festival docs and premium projects. “There’s a drive towards IP and buyers are talking about ‘fewer, bigger swings’,” she adds.

Exclusive: Cohen Media Group has acquired all North American distribution rights to filmmaker Mark Cousins’ Alfred Hitchcock doc My Name Is Alfred Hitchcock.
The film premiered at Telluride and examines the Psycho and Vertigo director’s vast body of work, exploring his techniques, themes and obsessions. The plan is for a theatrical release later this year.
Cousins, who utilizes actor and impressionist Alistair McGowan to portray Hitch in voiceover, connects the stylistic dots running through the director’s 50-plus films, from revered classics like North by Northwest, Psycho and Rear Window to less frequently discussed but intriguing works such as The Paradine Case, Sabotage and more, stretching all the way back to his silent films.

London-based documentary specialist Dogwoof has restructured its business affairs and sales teams as it continues to expand into production.
Former Western Edge Pictures executive Will Kane will join the company as head of business affairs, working closely with CEO Anna Godas and head of acquisitions and distribution Oli Harbottle to grow Dogwoof’s production and financing arms.
Meanwhile, Cleo Veger has been promoted to head of sales, and former Tvf International sales and acquisitions executive Katie Bench has joined as new senior sales executive.
Veger joined in 2014 and moved to the role of sales executive in 2017, and then sales manager in 2019. She will head an expanded sales team across all sales and pre-sales as well as festivals. Bench, who specialized in sales for Latin America, Iberia and Benelux at Tvf, will oversee TV sales in a number of territories. A new film about the development, regulation and roll-out of Covid-19 vaccines from “How to Survive a Plague” director David France has scored a raft of international sales.
Documentary specialists Dogwoof have sold the film — which will debut on HBO and HBO Max in 2022 — into Sky in the U.K., Germany and Italy; Nrk for Norway; Dr for Denmark; Svt for Sweden; Channel 8 and YesDocu for Israel; and HBO and HBO Max in Latin America.
Filming on the documentary, which is still untitled, began in April 2020 and wrapped in October. The project is now in post-production.
