Without a market component, the Monte-Carlo Television Festival has nevertheless built out and bulked up its industry section with each passing edition. More than anything, the move came out of sheer practicality, says executive director Cécile Menoni.
“We realized that the professionals who were already present could benefit from certain professional content,” Menoni explains. “The idea was to involve the many people who were already in attendance. To federate the juries, nominees and journalists, and to convey their overall vision of cotemporary industry concerns.”
This year’s festival business program runs from June 17 – 19, beginning with a conversation moderated by Variety’s Leo Barraclough that will find Amazon Studio’s Rola Bauer and executive producer Edward Ornelas discussing the challenges and opportunities, casting choices and artistic ambitions of the festival’s opening series, “Harlan Corben’s Shelter.”

Exclusive: Following the success of Netflix’s Wednesday and Oscar contender Elvis, Andrew Mittman has renewed his overall deal with MGM Television.
Mittman, via his 1.21 label, has re-upped his exclusive deal with the studio, fresh from the launch of Amazon’s Christoph Waltz-fronted series The Consultant.
It’s three years since Mittman struck his first deal with MGM Television.
Last year, he promoted Kai Dolbashian to Head of Development at the company.
It’s a sign of intent for MGM, which was restructured in November after its acquisition by Amazon, in a move that saw Lindsay Sloane become Head of MGM Scripted Television and new roles for Rola Bauer as President of International TV.
Mittman and 1.21 just launched The Consultant on Amazon last month; the series, which was created by Tony Basgallop, stars Waltz as a mysterious consultant who comes to the rescue of a mobile gaming company after...

In the wake of MGM television head Mark Burnett exiting the studio and Amazon on Monday, Amazon is re-organizing MGM’s TV division: folding its Orion Television label into the larger scripted side of MGM and axing the label just two years after it relaunched.
Amazon’s TV chief Vernon Sanders announced the news to staff on Tuesday in a memo obtained by IndieWire, adding that Orion TV head Bradley Gardner is exiting. Gardner is negotiating a producing deal at MGM TV.
The re-launched Orion Television was behind the rebooted “Teen Wolf: The Movie,” which is expected to stream on Paramount+ next year. Gardner came over to lead the division from Paramount Network and focused on comedy and drama series for the label.

The Man Who Fell to Earth will not be back on Showtime.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the Paramount Global-backed premium cable network has declined to renew the series for a second season. The news comes as showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet had originally conceived the drama as a closed-ended limited series but changed course as they were halfway through making the first season. Sources say execs were very pleased with the show’s creative and felt the season came to a natural and fitting conclusion.

Matthew Fox kept a mental checklist of things he’d like to accomplish in his career, and once every gig had been crossed out, he made a decision to “walk away from the storytelling business.”
Fox had starred in a pair of hit television shows in Party of Five and Lost, toplined a string of feature films, acted in a Western and jetted across the Atlantic to hit the stage for a play in London’s West End. So, in 2015, the actor retired, taking what seemed like a final bow with back-to-back films Bone Tomahawk and Extinction before settling down in Oregon with his wife and two children.

The comedy series On the Verge has been canceled by Netflix and Canal+ after one season, according to its creator and star, Julie Delpy.
Delpy broke the news today in the comments section of one of her recent Instagram posts. When a fan asked for an update on Season 2, Delpy said that the show has been “cancelled,” though its distributors “forgot to announce it was cancelled.”
On the Verge followed four female friends in their late 40s—played by Delpy, Elisabeth Shue, Sarah Jones and Alexia Landeau—who chose to use midlife not as a time of mourning their youth, but as an opportunity for personal reinvention, with the hope of finally living lives that embodied their beliefs and values.
The L.A.-set half-hour series was a co-production between Canal+ and Netflix, with the former releasing it in France, and Netflix distributing it in the rest of the world.

Showtime offers the next step to the universe of The Man Who Fell To Earth with its upcoming series of the same name starring Chiwetel Ejofor and Naomie Harris. While not a remake Nicolas Roeg’s 1976 film starring David Bowie series, executive producer, writer and director Alex Kurtzman said the series seeks to pay tribute to previous forms of the sci-fi story.
“I think it’s amazing and it’s beautiful that Walter Teviis is having is moment right now. I wish he had more of it when he was alive so he could appreciate how much people appreciate his work,” Kurtman said of the novelist, who also penned The Queen’s Gambit. I think we felt a tremendous debt to honor the legacy of David Bowie, of Walter Tevis and Nicolas Roeg – of all the people who built these extraordinary stories because they clearly wrenched their hearts open to tell them.
