His father was born in Afghanistan to an Afghan Jewish family. His mother, who was raised in New York, is of Ashkenazi Jewish background from a family of Holocaust survivors.
He was confirmed to be under consideration to play Quasimodo in the future live-action adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame as of 14 July 2019.
Nominated for a 2011 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Elder Cunningham in "The Book of Mormon".
