Apple TV+ is returning to its Bridgerton-esque period drama The Buccaneers.
Based on the unfinished Edith Wharton novel, the high-end series launched last month. It stars Christina Hendricks, Mia Threapleton (I Am Ruth), Kristine Frøseth (The Assistant), Alisha Boe (When You Finish Saving The World), Josie Totah (Saved by the Bell), Aubri Ibrag (Dive Club) and Imogen Waterhouse (The Outpost).
The Buccaneers charts goings-on in the late 19th century as a group of fun-loving young American girls explode into the tightly corseted London season, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash as the land of the stiff upper lip is infiltrated by a refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition. Sent to secure husbands and titles, their hearts are set on much more than that, and saying “I do” is just the beginning.

Kristine Froseth is used to being the new girl. The New Jersey-born actress moved from Norway and back every few years for her father’s banking job, seesawing between friendships and cultures. Due to her nomadic lifestyle, she struggled to find herself during her formative years, she says, similar to her character Nan St. George in Apple TV’s The Buccaneers.
“I just wanted to fit in so desperately,” Froseth tells Rolling Stone. “So, I adapted to whatever people were doing. I was a chameleon.”
In The Buccaneers, whose finale dropped Dec.

While The Buccaneers on Apple TV+ is based on Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel of the same name, the show also depicts some of the real history from the 1870s as well. Wharton modeled the main characters after people she knew during her debutante days and other prominent figures of the era.
Episode 1 “American Poison” introduces Conchita “Conchi” Closson (Alisha Boe) as one of the heiresses representing the new class of business barons in the 1870s. Wharton in fact modeled her character after Consuelo Vanderbilt, the real-life wife of a tycoon.
Den of Geek spoke to series creator Katherine Jakeways, executive producer Beth Willis, and director and executive producer Susanna White to find out how they were inspired by Wharton’s novel and the real story of Consuelo Vanderbilt to bring Conchita to life on screen.

Based on Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel, The Buccaneers is Apple TV+’s newest original series. The story follows five young American women from wealthy families in the 1870s looking to move up the social ladder by marrying the cash-poor and status-rich sons of the British gentry.
The first episode, “American Poison,” introduces the young women, their families, and the way the marriage market is not as romantic as depicted in other period dramas or previous Wharton adaptations. Conchita “Conchi” Closson (Alisha Boe) was the first American woman to marry a British Duke. Her friends Annabelle “Nan” St. George (Kristine Frøseth) and her sister Virginia “Jinny” (Imogen Waterhouse) plus sisters Mabel (Josie Totah) and Lizzie (Aubri Ibrag) Elmsworth are also hoping some of Conchi’s luck rubs off on them. Exclusive: Veteran British director Susanna White has revealed she’s working on a feature film based on her teenage life set against changes in the fashion world, as she gears up for today’s launch of Apple TV+ period drama The Buccaneers.
White is developing an untitled script for the BFI, the first time she has written a feature script herself, and the plot is based on her personal coming of age story. “It’s the story of me at 13, set in the world of fashion in early 1970s,” she told Deadline in an interview. “It’s very fun, sexy and hopefully moving.”
We hear the film will follow 13-year-old Gingernut as she grows up with the fur trade’s decline playing out in the background. The plot will see her trying to make sense of her parents’ dysfunctional relationship and include themes of family, growing up, betrayal, love and loss.

Apple TV+’s The Buccaneers opens with a wedding that almost doesn’t happen. As Conchita (Alisha Boe) frets in her family’s New York mansion, Lord Richard (Josh Dylan) pulls up late with a breakup letter in hand, worried his free-spirited fiancée won’t “fit” with his uptight English family. It’s only when Nan (Kristine Frøseth), Conchita’s maid of honor, reminds Richard that nothing matters but their love that he rips up the note and goes ahead with what looks to be the most lavish nuptials of the century.

Women in late-Victorian England are expected to wave gently, smile politely, and follow their husband’s orders. They’re not expected to splash around in neighboring lakes, shotgun glasses of champagne or uncross their legs in elaborate ballgowns, like the five American girls in Apple TV+’s The Buccaneers. Audiences will likely compare the 8-episode series to Netflix’s Bridgerton, as the women search for love and high-ranking titles. The trailer alone explodes with royal balls, suffocating corset gowns, and star-crossed romance.

With three “Star Wars” series competing for the first time in the same Emmy season — especially in the craft races — how can the critically acclaimed yet underperforming “Andor” hold its own against “The Mandalorian” (which has amassed 14 craft wins in two seasons), let alone the Jedi-infused “Obi-Wan Kenobi” limited series?
Simple: By touting its strengths as one of the top 10 shows of 2022 (per IndieWire’s Ben Travers), as well as the best “Star Wars” since “Rogue One,” which first introduced Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) as part of the daring mission to steal the Death Star plans. In the “Andor” prequel, created by Tony Gilroy (who co-wrote “Rogue One”), we find out how Cassian went from world-weary scavenger to conniving Rebel spy.

The 75th annual Directors Guild of America Awards will announce nominations for the television categories Tuesday, January 10. Voting opened December 9 and runs through Friday, January 6. Awards will be given out Saturday, February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. For more on the film ceremony, head to IndieWire’s Awards Calendar.
With DGA voting underway, clear frontrunners emerge. There are past nominees whose work on ongoing series merits recognition once more, like Bill Hader with “Barry,” Lucia Aniello for “Hacks,” or Donald Glover with “Atlanta”. Then there are directors whose most recent work on new programs has already been honored elsewhere and is likely to be honored again at the DGAs. Popular series like “Abbott Elementary” and “The Bear” will likely earn deserved nominations, as well, but there are more names to consider — names that don’t have a clear peg for awards consideration, whether that’s because...

With "Andor" season 1 in the bag, it's fair to say showrunner and creator Tony Gilroy and his fellow creatives have exceeded expectations with their "Rogue One" prequel series. What might have been little more than another log to add to the fire that is Disney+ and its never-ending supply of exclusive films and shows has emerged as perhaps the greatest "Star Wars" project released by the Mouse House to date. Heck, it's arguably in contention for the distinction of best live-action "Star Wars" title ever. Yes, really.
In its first season, "Andor" not only revealed the origins of the titular "Rogue One" character, but it also shined a light on the early days of the Rebel Alliance, painting the organization and its founding members in far richer shades of grey rather than the clear-cut heroes seen in the original "Star Wars" trilogy. But for as much as the show has...

The last three episodes of “Andor” featured a prison without bars, but part of both the thrill and the pathos of the latest “Star Wars” series is that Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) has felt like a captive of the Empire the entire time. Everyone in “Andor” is trapped, often visually through the sculpted, strong lines of Luke Hull’s incredible production design, and always through the eye of the camera, helmed in the first three episodes and Episodes 8 through 10 by director Toby Haynes.
The last full scene of Episode 10, a rare face-to-face meeting in which double-agent Lonni Jung (Robert Emms) tries to get out of the spy game with his handler, rebellion mastermind Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård), Haynes and editor Simon Smith delight in jump cuts that snap closer and at slightly-off angles on Lonni. The first season of "Andor" has managed to be both a heist movie and a prison movie set in the ever-expanding "Star Wars" universe. While the show's latest arc has seen Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) tucked away as an inmate and worker in an Imperial factory (where he's kept up the trend of alliterative aliases by trading "Clem" for "Keef"), the whole reason Cassian landed there in the first place is that he was vacationing on a beach resort planet using his cut of the money from the heist of an Imperial sector's payroll. It may not sound like the kind of thing a young Joseph Stalin would do, but that's the real-world historical figure whose early life inspired the heist in "Andor," according to showrunner Tony Gilroy.
The build-up and execution of the heist played out in "Andor" episodes four through six, directed by Susanna White and scripted by Gilroy's younger brother,...

In the span of its first handful of episodes, "Andor" has brought a completely new and much-needed creative revitalization to the "Star Wars" franchise. Much of this has to do with the fact that creator Tony Gilroy ("Michael Clayton," the "Bourne" trilogy) put aside any questions of studio interference -- like the kind that plagued the production of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" -- and simply told the boldly visionary story he set out to tell. But part of that success also came from the clever construction of the first season as a whole.
Split up into a number of mini-arcs, "Andor" has generally featured the same pairing of writer and director attached to three or four blocks of episodes at a time. Director Toby Haynes and Gilroy teamed up for the first few episodes, Susanna White and Dan Gilroy took over for the next three, and Haynes and...

Exclusive: His Dark Materials star Simone Kirby has become the latest to board Apple TV+’s drama adaptation based on Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel The Buccaneers.
Kirby joins the likes of Christina Hendricks, Kristine Froseth and Alisha Boe and will play Miss Laura Testvalley, the American’ girls English chaperone. She is responsible for inviting girls to the London debutante season, at first appearing to be kind and amiable before it transpires she shares a secret with Conchita’s husband, Lord Richard, and is manipulating the invitation.
Kirby played Dr Mary Malone in the second season of the BBC/HBO’s His Dark Materials adaptation. Past credits include Peaky Blinders, Ken Loach’s Jimmy’s Hall and Notes on Blindness.
The Buccaneers adaptation follows a group of fun-loving young American girls exploding into the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash and the disregard of centuries of tradition.

Midway through Season 1 of “Andor” (streaming on Disney+), it’s very clear that this is like no other “Star Wars” series. Showrunner Tony Gilroy has us hooked with his gritty spy thriller-meets-wartime heist about scavenger-turned Rebel spy Cassian Andor (Diego Luna). It should come as no surprise given what Gilroy previously achieved as the screenwriter of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “The Bourne Identity,” and as writer-director of “Michael Clayton.” His “Rogue One”origin story is the kind of nuanced, slow-burning character study “Star Wars” fans have been waiting for, filling in the details of a complex loner who will eventually light the fuse that ignites the rebellion against the Empire.
“Andor” is a Gilroy sibling collaboration, with Tony joined by screenwriter-director Dan (“Nightcrawler) and editor John (who also cut “Suicide Squad” and “Pacific Rim”). Although Lucasfilm and Disney+ initially wanted a five-season commitment, with each season spanning...

The latest episode of Andor is making quite an impressio with the Star Wars fandom.
Episode six of the Disney Plus series, which is based on Diego Luna’s Rogue One character Cassian Andor, has earned acclaim for its willingness to take its time and flesh out the story.
Season one will be 12 episodes, with a second season of 12 episodes, which will conclude the series, already confirmed.
After weeks of build up, the show’s first big set-piece arrived in the latest instalment, which was titled “The Eye’. It showed the lead characters undertaking a heist on Aldhani.
Viewers have praised the “stunning” episode, directed by Susanna White, for its tension, its visuals and for effectively bringing storylines together, and are agreed that it could be the greatest live-action episode of a Star Wars TV series to date.

Diego Luna and Kathleen Kennedy kicked off the Saturday session of Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim by dropping the final trailer for the Rogue One Disney+ spinoff series Andor.
“We’re going to go back five years before Rogue One, and you won’t believe where you find these characters,” Luna said. “You’ll see Cassian and not believe he was able to do what they did in Rogue One. It’s about a revolutionary and bringing change and hopefully a story you will love to watch.”

In the new footage, we see Luna as Cassian Andor listening to Stellan Skarsgård’s character, Luthen Rael, who has a proposal.
“You’ll ultimately die fighting these bastards,” Rael says. “Wouldn’t you rather give it all at once for something real?”
Andor is a spy thriller from Lucasfilm filmed over two 12-episode seasons.

Disney's annual D23 Expo is in full swing, which naturally means new promotions for terribly short-lived deals, a heaping spoonful of self-congratulatory corporate navel-gazing, and a day-long affair where the studio unveils all the entertainment goodies its been holding back for just such an occasion. Luckily, D23 tends to live up to the hype as far as first looks and fresh footage of highly-anticipated movies and shows are concerned. One such item on every "Star Wars" fan's wishlist has been the upcoming "Andor," the Disney+ series prequel/spin-off to the 2016 film "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" — which you may remember was itself a prequel/spin-off to the original 1977 "Star Wars." We're truly through the looking glass here, people.
But compared to the likes of previous streaming "Star Wars" series, "Andor" has appeared noticeably different right from the jump. Bringing back Diego Luna as the Rebel spy/officer Cassian Andor,...

The story of Cassian Andor will last two seasons.
Showrunner Tony Gilroy clarified Wednesday that Andor will end with its second season, and the final scenes of its last episode will directly segue into the Rogue One feature film that came out in 2016.
There had previously been confusion as to how many seasons the Star Wars prequel series would last, given that the show essentially has a five-year plan around Diego Luna’s Andor.
The series focuses on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make, bringing forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved after the destruction of Andor’s home world.
Gilroy, speaking at Disney+’s virtual TCA press day today, said, “We are covering one year in our first 12 episodes, that we’ve completed, in fact we’re finishing our final mix on [episode] 12 tomorrow. We...
