Wildflower Studios, a film studio co-owned by Robert De Niro, has named Cheryl Huggins as executive director ahead of a July 1 opening.
Huggins, who completed earlier executive stints with Quixote Studios and Sunset Studios, will oversee operations at the 11 soundstage, 765,000 square foot studio campus in Astoria, Queens developed by The Deer Hunter and Killers of the Flower Moon star De Niro, his son Raphael De Niro and managing partner Adam Gordon.
The new film studio from De Niro, who has investments in a string of celebrity-driven restaurants, promises “New York City level food” to film and TV productions that shoot on its stages. “It has long puzzled that in one of the greatest food cities, cast and crew were eating at craft tables. We will reset the bar,” Gordon said in a statement.
Gordon added the construction costs for Wildflower Studios was around $1 billion.

As Gov. Phil Murphy continues his push to woo film and television production to New Jersey, the state economic development authority today approved a partnership with a $1+ billion studio complex including 23 sound stages set to rise in the Bergen Point neighborhood of Bayonne, New Jersey at the site of a former Texaco oil refinery.
The project will break ground this fall, said Arpad Busson, the New York-based French financier whose Togus Urban Renewal is spearheading the project along with Rothschild in the UK and New York-based Moore Group. He said construction will take two years. Called 1888 Studios, after the year New Jersey-native Thomas Edison filed a patent for the motion picture camera, the 1.5 million square feet structure designed by architecture firm Gensler will look to evoke imagery of Golden Age Hollywood, spanning 55 acres and including comprehensive on-site production services, security, and a waterfront park and promenade accessible to the public.

Screen finance company Great Point Media has appointed administrators following the death of its founder, Jim Reeve
Great Point Media, which was founded by Reeve and Robert Halmi in 2013, has invested in films including “Asteroid City,” “Lady Macbeth” and “Blue Jean,” among other projects. Its last available accounts, filed in Jan. 2023, reported a turnover of £20 million ($25 million).
Halmi stepped down from the company in 2018, although stayed on as as non-exec chair at Reeve’s request, before going on to found a separate entity called Great Point Studios.
At the time of his death, Reeve was the majority shareholder in Great Point Media. His shareholding transferred to his wife, Laura, an agent for film and TV crew, following his sudden death in February at the age of 64. Reeve’s cause of death has not been disclosed.

With climate change and pollution making environmental concerns more urgent than ever, studios and productions are taking a lead role in incorporating sustainability into the workplace. And in some cases, it’s a necessity. Indeed, the AFM has a green filmmaking panel set for Nov. 3.
As New York City experiences a boom in studio construction, for example, recent legislation requires most buildings that exceed 25,000-gross-square-feet to meet new energy efficiency standards and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 and 80% by 2050 through solar panels, green roofs and other methods. “Studios have a unique opportunity with green roofs, because we’re typically low buildings with flat roofs,” says Silvercup Studios director of studio construction and capital projects Josh Sager.
Sager, a New York City department of environmental protection vet, notes that Silvercup was one of the first adopters of green roof technology in 2005. “It helps clean the air, reduce storm-water runoff, lower...

It seems you can’t aim a camera in New York or New Jersey these days without seeing a studio space that’s brand new, under construction or in the works.
Did you miss the Oct. 24 groundbreaking ceremony for the $350 million Sunset Pier 94 Studios, Manhattan’s first purpose-built studio campus with six soundstages totaling 85,000 square feet, opening in midtown in late 2025? No worries — there’s another on Nov. 15 for East End Studios’ $280 million Sunnyside Campus in Queens, with four stages totaling 91,250 square feet, set to be open in early 2025.
“Having an opportunity to build in Manhattan is like finding Bigfoot — a very unique situation,” says Sunset Studios head of global studios and production services Jeff Stotland. “We were fortunate to be able to partner up with Vornado [Realty Trust] because they had the ground lease on the piers.” The other backers are Hudson Pacific Properties, Blackstone and the New York City Economic Development Corp.

Pop-up soundstage specialist Volume Global has teamed with White Owl Film Studios, an Indigenous-owned multimedia company representing Canada’s First Nation community, on a new production facility in Wahnapitae First Nation territory.
The 20,000-square-foot soundstage features 35-foot-high clear span. Earlier this year, a Volume Global soundstage supported by air columns opened at Lionsgate Studios Yonkers, a new facility just outside New York City that was developed by Robert Halmi’s Great Point Studios. Halmi said Volume Global’s designs would “significantly enhance our production capabilities and expand our overall studio presence.”
John Lynch, the former head of global production at Amazon Studios and Paramount+ TV and a member of Volume Global’s board of advisors said the company’s pop-up stages use “leading-edge” technology. They give content producers “an expedited solution to their production space constraints, with a remarkable turnaround time of just 120 days.”

Robert Halmi’s Great Point Studios has partnered with Spain’s Grup Mediapro to form Phygital FX, offering expansive production services and led by Mediapro veteran Mario Sousa.
Plans are for the joint venture, initially a U.S. project, to expand globally, providing full production services to the film and television industry from stage and studio rentals; rental equipment including lighting, grip and electric; postproduction services; graphics; and virtual production services.
Halmi told Deadline that Phygital has committed more than $50 million to acquire state-of-the-art lighting and grip equipment, and set aside 200,000 square feet of space to store it in across Great Point’s growing roster of studio locations. Lionsgate Studio Yonkers is up and running while still being built out. Great Point now has 63 film stages open or under construction at locations in Yonkers, Atlanta, Buffalo, Newark and Wales. It isn’t just the proximity to New York’s top-shelf production community. It’s also the scale.
That was one of the topline points about Lionsgate Studios in Yonkers, NY made by Lionsgate Television Chairman Kevin Beggs and Great Point Studios CEO Robert Halmi during a panel discussion held there Thursday.
“The overall trend is toward more” production, Beggs said, despite Covid and a pullback in streaming at a number of companies. (The looming WGA strike deadline got only a passing mention during the 30-minute conversation.)
Since Game of Thrones raised the bar for cinematic, finely crafted episodic fare a decade ago, production timelines have lengthened and the need for square footage has increased. In New York, despite the addition of newer players over the years like Steiner Studios on top of legacy ones like Silvercup and Kaufman-Astoria, there is still a premium on basic amenities like street parking and,...
