Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes had its world premiere at London’s BFI Imax this evening, with a red carpet that featured director Francis Lawrence and stars Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth, Hunter Schafer, Josh Andres Rivera and more.
The return to the Suzanne Collins franchise that’s based on her prequel novel marks the first major world premiere outside of a festival to include actors on the media line since the SAG-AFTRA strike started in July. Even if the guild and the studios had not reached a tentative agreement to end the strike last night, the film had already secured an Interim Agreement with Lionsgate a non-amptp company.

In an age of reboots, it was only a matter of time before the Power Rangers franchise took a spin in the Hollywood machine – and this one is attracting all sorts of speculation. While it is still only a rumour, the buzz around the internet is that Chronicle writer Max Landis has been recruited to pen the Lionsgate-produced movie. In fact, a script has already been given to Power Rangers creators Saban and Co. and producers Jim Miller and Alison Shearmur.
When it first came to our attention, the idea of a Power Rangers reboot didn’t seem to sit too well. To tell you the truth, it still doesn’t, but with a fanbase already assembled, the climate obviously seems ripe for the bigwig studio executives over at Lionsgate to unleash an extra helping of spandex and ‘zords’ on the world.

A couple of months ago we learned that Lionsgate was going to produce a new Power Rangers movie. There was a lot of excitement around that announcement. It's safe to say that this is going to be a very different Power Rangers film than what we might expect. The main reason I say that is because the filmmakers are actually going to have a decent budget to work with. When the project was first announced this information was given:
"The film will be a re-imagining of the original Power Rangers, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers; a group of high school kids who are infused with cool and new super powers but must learn to work together as a team and harness their powers if they have any chance at saving the world."
We've now got word from a source at the Schmoes Know that Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis is currently writing the script.

When Lionsgate announced they were making a Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers movie, aside from wondering "Why?", everyone was curious as to what kind of movie it would be. Would it bear any resemblance to the two films made in the 90's? Would it bring us a vision of the Power Rangers that we've never seen before? Would it still be using old footage from the Japanese series repurposed for America thanks to dubbing? It looks like someone has asked Max Landis, and he may have put the secret formula to a Power Rangers movie in screenplay format! SchmoesKnow is reporting that Max Landis was the scribe of choice for Power Rangers and has already submitted a draft to producers Jim Miller, Alison Shearmur and the mighty Haim Saban. SchmoesKnow accurately points to the fact that the Chronicle writer is basically porting over the concept for that film into Power Rangers,...

The Dead Island cinematic reveal trailer propelled the game from an obscure title known only to horror gamers to one of the most talked about titles in 2011. A feature film may not be moving forward yet, but Hatchet III director Bj McDonnell teamed up with Machinima to create a live-action version of the trailer.
For those that weren’t aware, Lionsgate acquired rights to produce a Dead Island movie back in 2011. We haven’t heard anything since, but this may draw a bit more interest to the project. Here are details from the original announcement:
“Santa Monica, CA, September 27, 2011– Lionsgate® (NYSE: Lgf), a leading global entertainment company, today announced that it has optioned film rights from Deep Silver to develop a feature inspired by Dead Island, which became a viral media sensation when its haunting, artful trailer launched in February 2011. The announcement was made by Lionsgate’s co-coo and Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake.

Imagine if you could not hide even a single thought from anyone else. Now imagine what would happen if it wasn’t just you? Chaos Walking, the Carnagie Medal winning young adult novel trilogy by Patrick Ness, presents a futuristic world where an infection makes every thought an audible utterance and privacy absolutely non-existent and follows the story of a boy who holds the key to salvation.

After a fairly interesting and lengthy bidding war, Lionsgate has won the rights to make a movie off of the recently released video game Dead Island, and have released a statement about the film's production.
Back in February of this year, the cinematic and powerful trailer for Dead Island was released. The internet quickly exploded and websites all over (for both games and movies) were quick to show it off. It was haunting, filled with emotion, story and altogether took people by surprise. It was incredibly well done, and I've yet to see any other trailer move me in such a way.
The game released earlier this month and to everyone's surprise, the trailer had very little to do with the story of the game. Reviews for the game so far have been fairly mixed with fans and haters on both sides. That's not stopping Lionsgate.

Remember when the internet went batsh*t crazy over the announcement trailer for the Dead Island zombie videogame? Soon after movie rights were apparently picked up, but that proved to be false. Lionsgate has now officially announced that they have optioned the rights and have entered the “early development stage” with producers attached. The Mummy producer Sean Daniel plans to oversee the production and the below press release states the film will “focus on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling.”
I’ve also embedded the previous much-buzzed-about trailer below and although it seems like the game came and gone without the same level of buzz, this could prove to be a fun property. With Marc Forster‘s World War Z coming out next year and likely dealing with the same themes as above, it will be interesting to see if this one is necessary, or simply feels like a repeat.

Ever since that frighteningly beautiful trailer for the zombie killing video game Dead Island was released everyone was wondering when we the film adaptation would be announced. That trailer was so awesome, unfortunately when the game was released we found that it actually didn't really have a story and had nothing really to do with that family in the trailer that was released. The basic plot follows a a bunch of vacationers on an island paradise who are attacked by a horde of hellish zombies, but the movie will put a focus on this family we were all introduced to.
According to the press release, "Like the trailer that will serve as its primary creative inspiration, the film Dead Island will be an innovation of the zombie genre because of its focus on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling."
Today it's been announced that Lionsgate has acquired the movie rights to the game.

The Atlantic Film Festival has added Australia as the third spotlight country at its Canadian co-production market Strategic Partners, sitting alongside the Us and South Africa.
“It’s terrific that we are able to add Australia to our Spotlight this year. With so many strong Aussie producers interested in co-production with Canada and the rest of the world, it is bound to be fruitful on many levels,” said Strategic Partners director Jan Miller.
Selected producers will be supported by Film Victoria, Screen Nsw, Screen Queensland, ScreenWest and the South Australian Film Corporation to attend the event in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Strategic Partner has also renewed its partnership with Melbourne Film Festival’s financing market 37° South. One Canadian delegate has already been selected to attend the July21-24 event in Melbourne: Phyllis Laing from Buffalo Gal Films, in Manitoba.

Toronto -- With Wall Street coin drying up, the search for soft money and international options is taking film and TV producers to Canada for co-production financing.
Jan Miller, director of Strategic Partners, the co-production conference aligned with the Atlantic Film Festival, said getting American and European indie producers to Halifax later this month has suddenly turned into an easy sale.
"The last couple years were difficult in pulling together the conference. But this year, we've had more submissions than ever before, and we're really not having to talk people into coming," she said ahead of Strategic Partners' upcoming 13th edition.
This year's focus is on American and German producers, financiers, sales agents, agencies, broadcasters and distributors chasing potential Canadian partners for their local tax credits and other taxpayer subsidies, and co-production and co-venture know-how.

There is more here than meets the eye, mainly because the festival organization is so loose that events are not announced, nor are films announced until the day before they show and nobody goes out of his or her way to be especially helpful. It helps somewhat to speak Spanish, but even the Cubans are at sea when it comes to knowing what is going on.

Jason Reitman, the Oscar-nominated director of "Juno," says he is not interested in an actor's range, much preferring honesty. "I suppose I don't really enjoy acting," he admits frankly. "I find the most memorable and impressive roles are the ones in which actors magnify elements of their own personality and are forced into a kind of self-examination." Indeed, he says he writes screenplays with specific actors in mind, writing the part tailored not only to a voice but also a similarity with the performer or his persona.Based on the novel by Walter Kim, "Up in the Air" was no exception. For Reitman, George Clooney was the obvious choice for Ryan Bingham, a corporate downsizer and relentless business traveler who, after years of an unattached life, suddenly finds himself ready to make a romantic connection. Well, sort of. As with the protagonists in other Reitman films, Ryan's life choices and...

Toronto -- Tough times have coin-starved indie producers hopping from the Toronto International Film Festival to IFP in New York City, by way of the Strategic Partners co-production conference in Halifax.
Strategic Partners organizer Jan Miller points to a "higher caliber" of producers, sales agents, funders and broadcasters in Halifax from Friday to Sunday as traditional financing sources these days go dry or are depleted.
"Everyone has limited funds and limited time as they look to grab people between Toronto and Ifp," she said of this year's producer matchmaking.
About 30 projects have been invited to Halifax to participate in Canada's biggest film financing forum during the Atlantic Film Festival.
Montreal-based producer Melissa Malkin of Silo Corp. will be shopping in both Halifax and New York "White Circus," a live action/animated feature from Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski, who wrote and directed the Academy Award-nominated short animated drama "Madame Tulti Pulti.
