David Berman, the singer-songwriter best known for leading the long-running band Silver Jews, died Wednesday at the age of 52. Drag City, the Chicago record label that has released all of the group’s albums dating back to 1994’s Starlite Walker, confirmed the musician’s death. The label did not immediately reveal the cause of death.
“We couldn’t be more sorry to tell you this. David Berman passed away earlier today,” the label wrote in a statement. “A great friend and one of the most inspiring individuals we’ve ever known is gone.

A man accused of supplying Michael Douglas' jailed son with drugs has been ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation after rejecting a plea deal. Cameron Douglas is serving a five year sentence in New York after admitting to charges of methamphetamine possession with intent to distribute, and one count of cocaine possession, stemming from his arrest in 2009.
The incarcerated actor's alleged suppliers, illegal Mexican immigrants David and Eduardo Escalera, both face life in prison for reportedly providing "large amounts" of methamphetamine to Douglas and others. The brothers have been offered plea deals, with prosecutors agreeing to drop the drug charges against them if they pleaded guilty to illegal re-entry into the U.S., which carries a recommended sentence of between 35 and 51 months.

But Eduardo has turned down the offer, prompting Manhattan federal Judge Richard Berman to demand he seek professional mental help during a court hearing on Wednesday.
Eduardo's lawyer James Cohen told the court his client is "in denial", according to the New York Post.
If the Escaleras take the plea deal, it would mean 32-year-old Cameron Douglas would not be required to testify against his alleged dealers, coming face-to-face with the men for the first time since he agreed to co-operate with prosecutors.

Michael Douglas has praised the judge overseeing his son's court case for handing Cameron Douglas a five-year prison sentence - calling the punishment "adequate". The 31 year old faced a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years behind bars after he pleaded guilty to one count of methamphetamine possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and one count of possession of cocaine in January.
Douglas, along with his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and his father Kirk, wrote letters to Federal Judge Richard Berman, urging him to be lenient. Their pleas appeared to have been answered when Cameron was handed a five-year sentence last month, and Douglas is convinced Judge Berman made the right decision.
He tells America's "Today" show, "Well, I think any person can understand writing letters for leniency. Everybody does it. I think the court recognized his drug addiction as well as the crime that he committed. It's an adequate, I think,...

Cameron Douglas involuntarily joined our growing family of federal prisoners on Tuesday, 20 April 2010. Responding to pleas for compassion from Douglas' movie-star family and friends, Judge Richard Berman of the Us District Court for the Southern District of New York imposed a term of five years for Douglas' guilty plea for dealing quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine. The judge then remanded Douglas to the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York where he will await "designation" by the Bureau of Prisons (Bop). As a consequence of my having been a prisoner for my entire adult life (since 1987) on similar charges (non-violent drug trafficking), I'm intimately familiar with the designation process. Administrators will evaluate Cameron Douglas' criminal history and his initial adjustment in accordance with criteria that the Bop promulgates in its Custody and Classification Manual. Based on that assessment, the...

From David Bowie's son, who rejected his name, to Cameron Douglas, offspring of Michael Douglas, who was jailed for drug dealing last week, the children of stars clearly struggle to forge their own identity
Like any father witnessing the jailing of his son, Michael Douglas looked grim and ashen-faced last week in Manhattan.
Sitting in the courtroom in which his son, actor and DJ Cameron Douglas, was awaiting sentencing for dealing drugs, the Hollywood star listened to Judge Richard Berman pronouncing a harsh judgment. "Get beyond and get over that idea … that Cameron Douglas is a victim," Berman said.
Yet that was the argument that the Douglas clan – Michael, grandfather Kirk and Cameron's mother, Diandra – had put forward in letters explaining Douglas's problems in terms of his dysfunctional childhood. Cameron, it was claimed, was suffering the fallout from an age-old struggle: the battle of the son growing up with a powerful,...

Cameron Douglas is facing the possibility of serving his five-year jail term in a federal prison - after a judge refused a request to send him to a minimum security unit in New Jersey.
The son of actor Michael Douglas was locked up in a Manhattan federal jail for drug charges on Tuesday.
The 31 year old pleaded guilty to one count of methamphetamine possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, and one count of possession of cocaine in January.
Manhattan Federal Judge Richard Berman initially approved Douglas' request to serve the term at a minimum security prison in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
His legal team fears he may not "immediately qualify for designation" at the Lewisburg jail, so they wrote a letter to the judge asking for Douglas to be transferred to a facility at Fort Dix, New Jersey - where he could continue receiving therapy.
But Berman refused the request because it should have been made at the time of sentencing - and now it is unclear whether Douglas will be transferred to another minimum security unit if officials at Lewisburg refuse to take him.
The It Runs In The Family star was arrested in August following a drugs raid on his room at a New York City hotel.
He was reportedly plotting to move approximately $18,000 (£12,000)-worth of crystal meth from California to New York to sell when an undercover informant alerted the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. He was previously detained at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York for the eight months prior to his sentencing.

New York, April 23 – It has still not been decided where Michael Douglas’s son Cameron Douglas will serve a 60 month-sentence for distributing drugs.
Cameron’s lawyers initially requested that he be made to serve his five-year sentence at a minimum-security satellite prison camp at Lewisburg, Pa.
Manhattan Federal Judge Richard Berman accepted the plea, which must be formally approved by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
However, the defence believes that Cameron might not “immediately qualify for designation.

Michael Douglas' actor son Cameron apologised to his family as he was sentenced to five years in prison on drug charges on Tuesday.
The 31 year old faced a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years behind bars after he pleaded guilty to one count of methamphetamine possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, and one count of possession of cocaine in January.
And speaking in court, he admitted he was sober for the first time in his adult life, reports People.com.
He told U.S. District Judge Richard Berman, "Firstly, I would like to apologise to my family and my loved ones for putting them through this nightmare of my making - and for my behaviours that have caused a rift between us in the past.
"But I would like to ask you for an opportunity to be a productive family member and a good role model to my brothers and sisters...
"Nothing, Your Honour, is more important to me than my family and the goals that I have set for myself, and I feel adamant that I will not let myself be led astray by my warped thinking and false pretences due to my long heroin addiction.
"I believe, Your Honour, that things will be different this time because... I feel that I have the full support of my family and the people that are important in my life... If I should be so fortunate to have another chance, I would never squander that opportunity because I know how fruitful my life can be."

He’s got a legendary grandpa, a superstar father and a step-mom who doesn’t do too bad for herself. Kirk Douglas, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones all wrote letters asking for a lenient jail-sentence for Cameron Douglas in the weeks leading up to his hearing. Looks like the pleas worked, because Judge Richard Berman handed Cameron a five-year jail sentence, instead of a much harsher 10-year stint, for dealing crystal meth. Berman said, “We all need to get over the theme that Cameron Douglas is a victim. Some of the letters reflect a somewhat naive and even misguided viewpoint.” He also warned, “I think this case and this sentencing may well be his last chance to make it.”
Apart from the letters, the judge also noted the eight months Cameron has already spent in jail. He also mentioned that if the troubled rich kid does a drug treatment program behind bars,...

The 31 year old faced a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years behind bars after he pleaded guilty to one count of methamphetamine possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and one count of possession of cocaine in January.
Reports suggest the It Runs In The Family star had been plotting to move approximately $18,000 (£12,000)-worth of crystal meth from California to New York to sell when an undercover informant alerted the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
He was arrested in August following a drugs raid on his room at a New York City hotel.
In a letter urging Federal Judge Richard Berman to be lenient when sentencing his son, Michael Douglas called Cameron "a loving man" and "a thoughtful friend".
Cameron's stepmother Catherine Zeta-Jones and grandfather Kirk Douglas also penned letters to Manhattan's Federal Court in New York in the hope of seeking a reduced sentence.
Michael Douglas' letter was originally kept private, but a judge last week (ends18Apr10) ruled that it should be made public.
In the heartfelt message, the proud father opened up about his son's troubles, insisting Cameron is now "sober" after a stint in rehab and has become a "wonderful young man".

Lawyers for Michael Douglas' son Cameron Douglas have failed in their bid to ban the media from court when he is sentenced on drug charges later this month - the hearing will remain public.
Douglas has pleaded guilty to charges of dealing methamphetamine and faces more than 10 years behind bars when he is handed his punishment on 27 April.
His attorneys lodged a request earlier this week (begs12Apr10) to have the hearing kept private.
But the 31-year-old's legal team has failed in its legal challenge - on Friday, Manhattan Federal Judge Richard Berman ruled the courtroom will be kept open.
