Dakota Fanning’s Marge Sherwood describes Tom Ripley as an untrustworthy liar who takes advantage of people in the official trailer for Netflix’s Ripley. The limited series stars All of Us Strangers‘ Andrew Scott in the titular role and is based on Patricia Highsmith’s popular Tom Ripley novels.
“Tom Ripley (Scott), a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York, is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud, and murder.”
In addition to Scott and Fanning, the series stars Johnny Flynn (Lovesick) as Dickie Greenleaf, Eliot Sumner (Pretty Red Dress), Maurizio Lombardi (Monterossi), Margherita Buy (Mia Madre), and two-time Oscar nominee John Malkovich. Oscar winner Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List) wrote, directed, and executive produced the limited series.

Columbia Pictures has released the first full trailer for Anyone But You, the edgy rom-comedy starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell.
Directed by Will Gluck, with a screenplay co-written by Gluck with Ilana Wolpert, the film follows Bea (Sweeney) and Ben (Powell) after a seemingly fiery connection turns ice-cold after their first date. Reunited at her sister’s destination wedding in Australia, the duo find the other’s presence nearly unbearable, resulting in a series of incidents — including fires — that leaves the bride convinced their wedding is destined for ruin.
But this enemies-to-lovers tale takes a new turn when Bea and Ben’s exes arrive, leaving Bea wondering how to get out of her parents’ reunion plan and Ben desperate for a way to make his ex jealous. “Maybe we should just tell everyone we’re together,” Sweeney’s Bea suggests in the trailer. “It would solve that problem for...

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell can barely disguise their disgust for one another but pretend to be the perfect couple at a destination wedding, in the trailer for the edgy rom-com Anyone But You unveiled on Thursday.
The Euphoria star plays Bea, and Top Gun: Maverick’s Powell is Ben in the enemies-to-lovers comedy about rivals reuniting and thrust together at a glitzy wedding in Australia. “Let’s just tell everyone we’re together… Could be kind of fun,” Bea tells a puzzled Ben at one point in the trailer as they then replace hate stares with fake flirty glances as their personal chemistry gets pretty complicated around wedding guests.
“There’s no way we could convince anyone we actually like each other,” Ben tells Bea, suspicious of the challenge she sets for her nemeses at the gathering. “But through pretending, they actually fall in love,” Sony’s official...

Netflix has nabbed the worldwide rights to Lucy Walker’s documentary Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa after a world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
“It’s actually a fairy tale. You work for decades, and sometimes you have decades you’re doing everything wrong or nearly right, and then you have moments where you say I’m so glad I kept going,” Walker said of premiering the doc at TIFF during a Visionaries session sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter.
“Netflix is particularly good as it’s so global,” Walked added. A 2024 streaming release is planned for the documentary about Lhakpa Sherpa, the first Nepali woman to completely summit and survive Mount Everest. She climbed Mount Everest while bringing up two teenage daughters and recovering from an abusive marriage.
The film was shown as a work-in-progress at Toronto a year ago, before Walker returned for the world premiere.

Netflix has picked up worldwide rights to the documentary “Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa” out of the Toronto International Film Festival, TheWrap has learned. The sale comes on the heels of another high-profile pickup from Netflix, Anna Kendrick’s serial killer directorial debut “Woman of the Hour.”
The streamer will release the film in 2024.
Directed by Lucy Walker (“Of Night & Light”), the film tells the story of Lhakpa Sherpa, the first Nepali woman to summit and descend Mount Everest who is now a single mom working at a Connecticut Whole Foods.
“Lhakpa grew up in Nepal, illiterate and rejected by her family, and emigrated to the US without speaking English,” the official synopsis from TIFF reads. “When we meet her, she’s working as a dishwasher at Whole Foods in Connecticut, raising her teenage daughters, Sunny and Shiny, in a small apartment. She’s a single mom and spousal-abuse survivor.

Exclusive: Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to the documentary Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa out of the Toronto Film Festival, Deadline can exclusively reveal.
The deal is the second in quick succession for the streamer, which less than 12 hours ago snapped up Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, Woman of The Hour, for $11 million. No details as to the financial terms were disclosed.
Pic’s subject, Lhakpa Sherpa, was the first Nepali woman to completely summit and survive Mount Everest. For anyone else, that might be the greatest challenge and achievement of their life. But for the unforgettable Lhakpa — now a single mother of three, based in Connecticut — it was just the start.
Hailing from Sk Global Entertainment, Obb Pictures, and Avocados and Coconuts, the doc was directed by Lucy Walker, the 2x Oscar nominee previously at TIFF with another tale of a female Everest climber in 2006’s Cinema Eye Honors Award-nominated Blindsight.

Imagine Entertainment has expanded the purview of Imagine Documentaries chief Justin Wilkes to overseeing new business development as chief strategy officer for the independent content powerhouse.
The move for Wilkes comes as Imagine Entertainment is actively seeking an influx of capital to fund its ambitious growth plans. The company headed by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer since 1986 is looking to bring in a new financial investor that will allow Imagine to continue operating status quo with its current management team.
At present, Imagine is in talks with U.K.-based Centricus Asset Management about a sale that would value the company at around $700 million. Imagine executives declined to comment on the status of the talks, and a source close the situation cautioned that other discussions are under way and there’s no certainty of a deal coming together with Centricus. In early 2016, Raine Group became the majority owner of Imagine with an estimated $100 million investment.

In the series, Tom Ripley (Scott), a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York, is hired by a wealthy businessman to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home. Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit. Fanning will play Marge Sherwood, an American living in Italy who suspects darker motives underlie Tom’s affability. Sherwood was previously portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow in the film “The Talented Mr. Ripley.”
“Dakota Fanning is the perfect choice to play the deliciously complicated Marge opposite Andrew Scott’s Tom Ripley,” said Amy Israel, executive vice president of scripted programming at Showtime. “She...

Exclusive: In 2016, Cheryl Guerriero’s script about a college football star-turned-convict landed her a spot on the Black List. Nearly four years later, the writer-producer’s screenplay became Palmer, the Apple TV+ film directed by Oscar-winning The Cave helmer Fisher Stevens with Justin Timberlake starring in the lead role.
Set in a small Louisiana town, Palmer follows Timberlake’s Eddie Palmer as he returns to his community following some time behind bars. Looking to start over, Eddie finds company in a 7-year-old boy named Sam (breakout Ryder Allen), who amuses himself with pretty hair accessories, dolls and Disney princesses. Abandoned by his mother (Juno Temple) and often the target of bullying, Sam forges a brotherly bond with Eddie that helps the latter pick up the pieces of his once-broken life. June Squibb stars as Eddie’s grandmother Vivian, and Alisha Wainwright plays Sam’s Teacher Maggie.

The trailer for Justin Timberlake’s new film “Palmer” has arrived. In the drama, Timberlake plays a former high school football star turned convicted felon who now has the responsibility of caring for 7-year-old Sam, whose interest in tea parties, dolls and fairies makes him the target of bullies at school.
“Palmer” is a coming-of-age story directed by Fisher Stevens, and the film shows a solemn, more introspective side to Timberlake as he looks after Sam and comes to realize that neither he nor the boy have to conform to what everyone expects them to be.
“Listen to me, son, kids are mean, especially when they see something that they’re not used to seeing,” Timberlake says in the trailer. “The truth is, I haven’t felt like I was good at anything until Sam.”
Cheryl Guerriero wrote the screenplay for “Palmer,” which also stars Juno Temple, Alisha Wainwright, June Squibb and Ryder Allen.

CAA Media Finance is representing worldwide distribution rights to “India Sweets and Spices,” produced by Sk Global (“Crazy Rich Asians”) and Madison Wells (“Genius”).
The film is directed by Geeta Malik (“Troublemaker”) and is based on her own script “Dinner With Friends” that won the 2016 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in screenwriting. The film follows a young woman who, after her first year at college, returns to her affluent suburban New Jersey home for the summer and discovers distressing secrets about her seemingly picture-perfect Indian American family.
“We don’t often see movies about the duality of identifying strongly with both Indian and American traditions, and not having to choose between them,” Malik said. “And I didn’t want to make a movie specifically about any sort of culture clash. Every generation, no matter what their background, has to find a way to both break free from and embrace their history. That...
