Barcelona— Germany-based Patra Spanou has taken international rights on “Trot,” the feature debut of Galician director Xacio Baño. World-premiering in Locarno’s Filmmakers of the Present, the competitive showcase often featuring new or rising talent, “Trot” will also participate in the upcoming San Sebastian Zabaltegi-Tabakalera sidebar competition.
Baño has previously participated at Locarno’s Pardi di domani with his shorts “Eco” (2015) and “Ser e voltar” (2014). He was selected by Variety as a top Spanish talent in 2015 and snagged a Slamdance nomination and a win at the Aspenshorts Fest with “Anacos” in 2013.
‘Trot’ is produced by Frida Films, with Lithuanian Ciobreliai Films co-producing. An independent arthouse production outfit based out of Santiago de Compostela, Frida Films productions include Adán Aliaga’s “The Ethernaut’s Wife” and Nely Reguera’s “Maria (and the Others),” best film in Miami’s HBO Ibero-American Competition.

Each year the Sitges Film Festival commercial spot is almost as eagerly awaited by the general public as its lineup, and Rafa Antón, creative director of the China agency and the man responsible for its campaigns over the last ten years, has presented this year’s commercial, entitled "Alter Ego". In addition, the preliminary lineup for the Festival has been revealed, but it's not complete by any means. More will be announced throughout the month.
Antón presented the commercial at the Velodrome, property of the brand, along with Festival director Angel Sala and one of Sitges 2011’s partners Moritz Beer.
As explained at the presentation of the Sitges 2011 posters, artificial intelligence is this year’s central theme, represented through the geminoids created by professor Ishiguro in Japan. For the commercials, Rafa Antón stated that he’d “continued with the same commemorative leitmotif of the tenth anniversary of Artificial Intelligence (Steven Spielberg...

It may be a holiday here in the States, but it's business as usual for the rest of the world, as evidenced by the news breaking today regarding the 2011 Sitges Film Festival, held 6-16 October on the Catalan coast of Spain. We have for you info on the fest's opening film as well as a programme preview.
From the Press Release: Sitges 2011 delves into the concept of artificial intelligence, examining how it’s been discussed in film and what its future prospects are in regard to fiction and reality.
With the tenth anniversary of A.I. (Steven Spielberg, 2000) as a point of contact, the Festival will consider the questions that inspired Kubrick and Spielberg for this project: the emotional intelligence of machines and communication between synthetic intelligences.

I’m not quite sure what they’re putting in the water in Greece but there’s definitely something going on. The country has never really been at the forefront of filmmaking but over the last year, there have been an assortment of excellent titles coming out of the Balkan Peninsula.
First there’s Vardis Marinakis’ Black Field (check out our preview and interview with Marinakis) Giorgos Lanthimos’ Dogtooth (review) and yesterday we got word of Athina Rachel Tsangari's Attenberg. Today we have Yiannis Economidis’s Mahairovgaltis.
It’s the story of Nick, a man who lives in the country; a man who lives for the here and now. When his father dies, he’s urged to leave small town life behind and head to Athens where his uncle offers him food, board and an easy job but Nick's life takes a sharp turn once he arrives in the metropolis.

Finally, after years in development hell and various failed production announcements from the company Filmax, who even released promotional teaser trailers and one sheets at last year's Cannes Film Festival, the long awaited adaptation of Spanish comic book “El Capitán Trueno” is currently confirmed to be under pre-production under the title “Capitán Trueno y El Santo Grial”. The film will be directed in 3D by Antonio Hernández (“Los Borgia”) and will star Sergio Peris-Mencheta (“El Arte de Morir”) who just started his career over at the United States with the soon to be released films “Love Ranch” by Taylor Hackford and “Resident Evil: Afterlife”. The cast will be completed by Elsa Pataky (“Giallo”) and Spain's Adán Aliaga, who got his start in film with another comic book adaptation called “Estigmas”. Ironically the film will be no longer produced by Filmax but by Maltés Producciones and Sorolla Films with the collaboration...

Rating: 8 out of 10
It’s difficult, if not nearly impossible, to walk into Adán Aliaga’s full length directorial debut without some consideration of the religious overtones that will undoubtedly appear in a film titled Estigmas (direct translation: stigmata) but Aliagan’s film isn’t concerned with the global apocalypse or the salvation of humanity but rather the exploration of one man’s life.
Bruno is a burly man with a soft demeanour. He’s kind, quiet and in trouble. An alcoholic, on the verge of being evicted and working for a man who takes advantage of his good will, he’s quickly being pushed into edges of life. He awakes one morning to find himself bleeding from wounds that have mysteriously appeared on his hands – stigmata. To Bruno, they are a curse, to his employer they are...

We first covered reported on this flick back in January of 2008, with the first stills dropping in October, and now we have the first teaser trailer. Directed by Adán Aliaga and adapted from a graphic novel by Lorenzo Mattotti and Claudio Piersanti about an alcoholic with tragic fate whose hands start to bleed, hence the Stigmata.
Estigmas is the story of Bruno, a rough man, strong and alcohol addicted. Bruno simply aims to be a normal person, but his fate is already written. One day he wakes up and his hands start bleeding. This is a trip to redemption through suffering, pain, and death. From now on he has to live with these new stigmas..
