Principal photography for “Man & Witch,” an homage to the fantasy films of the 1980s, has wrapped after a six-week shoot on location in Scotland and Los Angeles.
The film, directed by Michael Hines (“Still Game”) marks the comeback of child star Tami Stronach, best known for her role as the Childlike Empress in “The NeverEnding Story” (1984). Stronach plays the title role of Witch who helps a cursed goatherd in his quest for love. Sean Astin (“Stranger Things”), Jennifer Saunders (“Absolutely Fabulous”), Eddie Izzard (“Hannibal”) and Bill Bailey (“Hot Fuzz”) voice the goatherd’s loyal companions Dog, Goose, Sheep and Donkey, brought to life with photo-realistic puppets fabricated by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, and operated by a team of puppeteers led by Damien Farrell (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”).
The cast also includes Christopher Lloyd (“Back to the Future”), Shorhreh Aghdashloo (“The Expanse”), Michael Emerson (“Lost”), Pauline McLynn...

“I’m still looking for that wave that’s gunna say that’s enough, I’m done … but I just haven’t found that wave yet.”
The DVD cover reads “Storm Surfers[:] The Movie”, a title that suggests all the depth and energy that very easily could have been had the filmmakers been less interested in surfing than they were in these surfers. But this is a film of technical and visual ambitions, not personal or psychological investigation. The film was released as Storm Surfers 3D (2013) to give some perspective. [The film is also available on Blu-Ray 3D.] Storm Surfers follows three men during the winter season (May to August) in and around Australia. They’re mission—and they keep calling it a mission—is to surf new waves—waves being ambiguous as to a particular wave and the geological models that create them—for the first time either for themselves or mankind. Storm Surfers 3D – how exciting can a documentary about surfing be? Well, when Ross Clarke-Jones and two-time World Champion Tom Carroll are involved, a hell of a lot more exciting than I expected. Following these two aquatic daredevils on their quest to surf the most dangerous and intimidating waves around, we watch them get tossed about like rag dolls by Neptune’s wrath, but also gasp at their expertise when conquering these fabled surfing spots. Exploring already tagged areas isn’t enough for our two men though, as their overarching goal is to surf a wave that’s never been surfed before, one that could end our shredder’s careers if handled the wrong way.
Acting like two almost fifty year old children, Tom and Ross are a fun duo to watch and make for entertaining characters, showing an admirable amount of energetic vibrancy in their aging bodies. Watching the...

Storm Surfers 3D offers far more than run-of-the-mill nature-porn docs. Sure, it's got tremendous footage of waves and silly people on funny boards trying to catch them. I saw the film on a big screen last September at Tiff, and was blown away by the spectacle. Yet the film is actually quite a bit more sophisticated than random shots of water churning. Tracing the friendship of Australian big-wave legends Tom Carroll and Ross Clark-Jones, the film treads more than water, delving into notions of mortality, aging, and the visceral thrill of the hunt.I spoke to co-director Christopher Nelius via Skype while he was in the UK. Twitch: How did you convince the reticent Tom and Ross to open up about their feelings, as much as...

Have you ever seen a killer wave, mate? Well, have you ever seen a killer wave . . . in 3D? This question resounds above all when watching Storm Surfers 3D, Chris Nelius and Justin McMillan's bodacious, x-treme, etc. doc about two Australian bros who love to surf. All right, they're not just any two bros—they're Tom Carroll and Ross Clarke-Jones, surfing legends who spend their time chasing the biggest waves around, with a team that includes a meteorologist and a fleet of jet skis. Yet despite the hoopla about finding "new waves" and exploring "hidden" surfing locations, the principal reason for the film's existence seems to be showing its heroes surfing giant waves in 3D. That 3D is gorgeous, but as wave after wave crashes by without much else happening, you might begin t...

Check out this cool trailer for a crazy looking new surfing documentary called Storm Surfers 3D. I love watching surf documentaries! I'm a huge fan of films such as The Endless Summer parts one and two, Riding Giants, Billabong Odyssey and several more. Storm Chasers looks like it's going to make a great addition to all of those docs. Not only am I a fan of these films, but I also enjoy surfing, just not waves as big as these guys ride, because I would die.
The film centers on Aussie surfers Ross Clarke-Jones and Tom Carroll as they hunt down the craziest waves on the planet and then ride them. The movie is narrated by Toni Collette, and you can check out the first trailer here! I can't wait to see this film! It looks intense. ...

Following in the footsteps of surfing documentaries like Step into Liquid, Riding Giants and The Endless Summer, a new documentary is diving into the ocean, showing the seemingly insane thrill-seeking hobby of big-wave riding. But this time, the action will come at audiences in another dimension with Storm Surfers 3D. Not only are Tom Carroll and Ross Clark-Jones surfing legends, but they have surf forecaster Ben Matson helping them track and chase giant storm systems in order to catch the biggest and most dangerous waves. Seriously, some of this footage is breathtaking and unbelievable. It should be impressive in theaters. Here's the first trailer for the documentary Storm Surfers 3D from YouTube: Combining cutting-edge 3D technology and bravura filmmaking, Storm Surfers 3D is the ultimate big-wave thrill ride, directed by Justin McMillan and Chris Nelius.. The film follows best friends and surfing legends Tom Carroll and Ross Clarke-Jones, along with surf forecaster Ben Matson,...

This article originally appeared in If Magazine #148 (Aug-Sept 2012). Since Storm Surfers 3D was released on August 14, it has become the eighth highest grossing local feature documentary of all time.
The tight-knit group behind Storm Surfers saw the production of a 3D feature film as a necessary step in their quest to create a truly international brand and they paid for it, in part, by leveraging the interest of 3D television channel operators.
.The benefit of using television pre-sales to finance the feature and other properties is that it is non-recoupable finance and the producer ends up with a bigger equity position,. said Marcus Gillezeau, who produced the latest chapter in the Storm Surfers franchise with life and business partner Ellenor Cox.
"Television pre-sales are licenses, so they don't take an equity position in the finance package whereas theatrical distributors or sales agents provide a minimum guarantee (Mg) which is recouped in first position.
