The Florida Board of Education had voted that the state would continue teaching students from kindergarten to 12th grade that slavery benefitted black people.
On May 29, the board approved a 217-page document with some changes to Florida’s public school standards. They voted to keep the controversial African American history standards.
In July 2023, Florida approved educational standards for middle schoolers that included lessons teaching that enslaved people received a “personal benefit” from slavery.
The curriculum provoked enormous protests in Florida, particularly from teachers’ groups.

In a local TV interview, former President Donald Trump revealed a list of four people he is considering as vice presidential candidates.
In an interview with News 12 News Jersey, following his campaign rally in The Bronx, New York, political reporter, Tara Rosenblum asked if Trump was considering former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, who declared last week that she would vote for him in the 2024 presidential election.
“A big night last night, Nikki Haley making her first public remarks since dropping out of the race,” the reporter asked. “She said that Joe Biden has been a catastrophe, and she’s voting for you. I’m sure those were welcome remarks for you, but they also left a lot of people wondering if there is room for her on your team or, better yet, your ticket.”

Rep. Byron Donalds, without evidence, accused President Joe Biden of being “jacked up” and using “injections” in order to appear “coherent.”
There is no evidence that Biden uses or has used drugs. The Republican congressman lobbed the baseless speculation Sunday during an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo, who countered Donalds’ allegation by responding, “These are obviously very serious charges… We’re not doctors. We have no idea.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson made headlines on Tuesday when he attended former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York. In doing so, he became the highest-ranking Republican official to offer support to Trump and endorse his criticisms of the U.S. justice system.
Johnson is the most recent GOP figure to visit the courtroom as he faces accusations that he falsified business records to conceal hush money payments directed to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election. Alongside Trump at the courthouse were Gov. Doug Burgum (R-North Dakota), who has been mentioned as a potential running mate for Trump in the 2024 election, as well as Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Florida.) and Rep. Cory Mills (R-Florida.).
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), another potential vice presidential candidate, along with Sens. Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) and Rick Scott (R-Florida), had previously appeared at the trial to show their support for Trump.

Donald Trump has repeatedly referred to his criminal hush-money trial as a “witch hunt” and a “show trial,” and if the former president wanted to make a spectacle of the court’s proceeding, he now has quite the supporting cast.
In the last several days of courtroom drama, Trump has been accompanied by an entourage of prominent Republican lawmakers eager to be seen offering their public support to the indicted former president. Not only is their presence an act of theatrical solidarity, they have been acting as mouthpieces for Trump,...

Michael Cohen is back in court Tuesday for a second day of testimony in Donald Trump’s criminal trial, detailing to the jury how he repeatedly lied about his role in orchestrating hush money payments to “protect” the former president.
In 2018, when the public learned that Cohen had arranged a $130,000 payment in 2016 to porn star Stormy Daniels in order to buy her silence about an alleged affair with the former president, the lawyer denied that Trump’s campaign or company had anything to do with the arrangement.

Updated: House Speaker Mike Johnson is the latest figure to lend his support to Donald Trump and his claim that the New York hush money trial is a “sham.”
Johnson was in the background as Trump made his regular morning statement to the press in the hallway just outside the courtroom, and the speaker nodded at the former president as he made his way in.
Also joining Trump were other supporters, including Vivek Ramaswamy, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-fl) and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum. Ramaswamy and Burgum are among a number of vice presidential contenders to visit the courthouse to show their fealty to Trump, on trial for allegedly falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Right-wing Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Florida) is on Donald Trump‘s shortlist as a potential vice presidential pick.
Donald is said to be one of Trump’s most trusted surrogates and has been a loyalist of the former president.
However, old posts from Donalds’ Facebook page show the representative criticizing Trump. In 2011, one of Donalds’ posts says, “Trump won’t run. Thank God!” The post referenced Trump’s decision not to run against former President Barack Obama.
Other posts of Donalds directly attacking Trump on social media and in interviews from 2011 to 2012. Donalds was a Tea Party member and ran for Congress at the time. Donalds called out Trump’s trade policies and his birtherism conspiracy theory about Obama.
In the past, Donalds supported the privatization of programs such as Social Security and Medicare, calling them “vouchers.”

Republicans face a dilemma over in vitro fertilization after Alabama’s state Supreme Court ruling that says frozen embryos are “children.”
While most Republicans are anti-abortion, the party is split over the ethics of IVF.
Introduced in January, the Life at Conception Act, which is similar to the Alabama law that was the basis for the state Supreme Court ruling, states that a human being is considered one “at all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization or cloning, or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.”
The act protects unborn life from conception until birth. The original act did not make an exception for IVF treatments.
The bill was backed by House Speaker Mike Johnson and 125 other House Republicans.

At a town hall event held in Greenville, South Carolina, Donald Trump revealed his list of potential running mates and reaffirmed his influence within the Republican Party. In a conversation with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham, Trump discussed the speculated candidates on his vice presidential shortlist.
Among the names mentioned were three former GOP candidates: Sen. Tim Scott (R-South Carolina), entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Florida). Trump also confirmed the inclusion of Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Florida), Gov. Kristi Noem (R-South Dakota) and former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii).
Though a Democrat while in Congress, in 2022 Gabbard announced that she had shifted her views toward conservatism and has been a frequent guest on Fox News.

Donald Trump wants to implement a 16-week national abortion ban, The New York Times reported on Friday.
The former president has largely avoided taking on reproductive rights during the Republican primary, although he has at times made a point to take credit for the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. The decision has been blamed for the GOP’s lackluster showing in the 2022 midterm elections, and Rolling Stone reported last year that Trump has privately griped that the party is “getting killed on abortion.”

Serial liar and alleged fraudster George Santos is no longer a member of Congress. The New York Republican was expelled from his office on Friday after a successful two-thirds majority vote to secure his ouster.
Of the 311 representatives who voted to remove Santos, 105 were members of his own party. Yet despite Santos’ track record as a liar, the criminal indictments against him, and the findings of a scathing House Ethics report exploring his alleged misconduct, some far-right Republicans are furious at the notion that a member of Congress can face repercussions for their actions.

Update: Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) is the latest GOP nominee for speaker, but he may face the same types of divisions that sank three previous party designees for the top House post.
Johnson, the vice chair of the House Republican Conference and deputy whip, drew 128 votes in the third ballot this evening, per CNN, but coming in second, with 44 votes, was “other.” GOP members cast 43 of those “other” votes for Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-ca), the former speaker, even though he was not in the race. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-fl), the other declared candidate, garnered 29 votes.
“Democracy is messy sometimes, but it is our system,” Johnson said to reporters after the vote. “This conference, this House Republican majority is united.” He said the “intention” is go to the House floor for a vote on Wednesday.

Jimmy Fallon thinks he may have found a solution for the Republican Speaker of the House problem: the Amazon Alexa House Speaker. “The Tonight Show” host cut to a fake commercial for the product on Monday night.
The commercial advertised some of benefits of the robotic speaker, including its ability to vote on bills and heckle the President during the State of the Union by saying “Let’s go Brandon,” a nod to the Republican outburst that occurred in February. Much like Kevin McCarthy, the speaker also has the ability to lose its jobs after just a few weeks.
“It’s time to listen to the speaker that’s been listening to you since 2014,” the commercial’s announcer cheerily says. Watch the segment above.
On Monday, the Republican-led House of Representatives hit its 20th day of being locked as it continues to search for the new Speaker of the House.

Update: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Oh) lost ground in his bid to become House speaker, as he again fell short of a majority in a roll call vote.

Jordan won over some members who voted against him on Tuesday, but he lost others. It’s unclear whether he will move to a third vote. The House went into recess after the final tally was announced. Jordon told reporters afterward that he hasn’t decided if he will pursue a third vote.
In nominating Jordan, Rep. Tom Cole (R-ok) urged Republicans to end the “chaos” of the past two weeks, calling the Ohio congressman an “honorable man.”

Update, 1:51 p.m. Pt: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-oh) won the GOP nomination to become the next House Speaker, but he still appeared to be a ways away from securing a majority.
Jordan got 124 votes in secret balloting this afternoon, to 81 for Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga), according to Punchbowl News and other outlets. Scott got into the race at the last minute earlier today.
Jordan needs 217 votes to win the speakership, although that threshold may change if lawmakers are absent. Jordan requested another secret ballot to see if members would back him in a public vote on the floor of the House, but the vote was 152-55, still far short.

Republicans have responded to Monday’s shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville the same way they respond to most mass shootings: offering thoughts, prayers, and whatever linguistic gymnastics necessary to avoid taking action to address the epidemic of child slaughter.
Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) said it was “premature” to consider new gun legislation. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) said it was too “emotional.” Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor now languishing toward the bottom of the polls for the the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, said on Tuesday that it...

Following the killing of three children and three staff members at a Tennessee elementary school, President Joe Biden renewed calls for gun control legislation, including a plea to Congress to pass a proposed assault weapons ban.
When questioned by reporters if they would support increasing regulations on firearms in the wake of yet another school shooting, Republican lawmakers are already dumping cold water on the prospect of supporting new legislation.
Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) called discussions of proposed legislation “premature.” When a reporter pointed out that...

Congressman Robert Garcia (D-Cal.) criticized his Republican colleagues for treating Jan. 6 inmates held in pre-trial detention like “celebrities” during a congressional visit to the D.C. jail.
“The Republicans rushed to [the inmates] like they were celebrities, talking to them, patting them on the back,” Garcia said on MSNBC Friday afternoon.
The House Oversight Committee coordinated the visit. Republicans on the committee have long insisted that inmates held at the D.C. jail are detained in inhumane conditions. In October, inmates in the so-called “Patriot Ward” publicly requested a transfer to Guantanamo Bay Prison.

The House Oversight Committee is holding a hearing to dig into why Twitter suppressed the New York Post‘s reporting on Hunter Biden’s laptop. The executives involved have already admitted the decision — made because they believed it violated the platform’s hacked materials policy — was a mistake. Nevertheless, Republicans are determined to convince Americans that Twitter was in cahoots with the Democratic Party to prevent the story from hurting Biden ahead of the 2020 election.

Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) finally got the speakership early Saturday morning, but not before a weeklong slog that saw flared tempers, animated huddles and, in the penultimate drama before his moment of victory, a near-brawl.
Inside the chamber, many reporters in the press gallery had risen from their seats once McCarthy walked down the center aisle to converse with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-fl), the lone holdout he needed to obtain a majority, as McCarthy’s allies sat and crouched down to plead with the dissident. “On your knees,” one Democrat said loudly, as other lawmakers began to fix their gaze on what was unfolding.
Soon voices were raised. Gaetz pointed his finger at McCarthy, and McCarthy’s face was one of utter frustration. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-al) walked over and, in a moment that will forever live in the annals of House speaker votes, began to lunge at Gaetz before being restrained by Rep.

Update: The weeklong slog to launch a new Congress continued with a 13th ballot, as Kevin McCarthy picked up a vote yet still was short a majority.
Rep. Andy Harris (R-md) shifted his vote to McCarthy, giving the Republican leader 214 votes in the latest round. That’s still three short of what he needed to win the speakership.
Meanwhile, reports are emerging of the concessions that McCarthy made to win over the holdouts, including requiring just one member to file a motion to remove the speaker. Other concessions, according to Politico, would require a vote on a balanced budget amendment and there would guarantees for giving members of the Freedom Caucus seats on committees.
Hakeem Jeffries gained a vote in the latest round, as Rep. David Trone (D-md) made it to the floor after having surgery earlier in the morning. He drew loud cheers as he made his way to...

Update: After five roll call votes and no speaker. the House is adjourning for the night.
When they return, many members will be marking the second anniversary of the attack on the Capitol.
Previously: As expected, Kevin McCarthy fell short on the 11th ballot for speaker of the House.
While there are reports of an imminent deal with at least some of the dissidents, an agreement doesn’t appear to be finalized as McCarthy’s allies plan to seek an adjournment until noon Et/9 Am Pt on Friday.
On the floor, Democrats have been in a large huddle around Hakeem Jeffries and other leaders.
Jeffries received 212 votes in the most recent roll call, McCarthy received 200, Byron Donalds garnered 12, Kevin Hern got 7 and Donald Trump got one. There were some guffaws when the clerk read Trump’s vote total.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus had a good laugh about the ongoing, undeniably entertaining GOP House Speaker fight.
On January 4, the Veep actress shared an Instagram photo of the real-life events and jokingly wrote in the caption, “If we don’t win an Emmy for this episode of @veephbo, I’m leaving the TV academy.”
Louis-Dreyfus’ post was referencing the current saga in the House; they’re really struggling to settle on a new Speaker.

For the first time in a century, it’s taking multiple days and votes to complete the process. The issue is that 218 votes are needed to elect a Speaker, and even though Republicans control the House as of January 4, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-California) has not been able to reach that number as conservatives cast their votes for Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Florida).

Kevin McCarthy has lost his seventh, eighth, and ninth House speakership ballots.
Nineteen Republicans voted for Rep. Byron Donalds after the third day of voting commenced on Thursday. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) voted for former President Donald Trump, who had not received any votes over the first six rounds of voting, and Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.) voted “present.” Twenty-one Republicans also didn’t vote for McCarthy on the eighth, ninth, and tenth ballots.

Update: The House will adjourn until noon Et/9 a.m. Pt on Thursday, giving Kevin McCarthy more time to try to sway holdouts to support his bid for speaker — or work out some other sort of deal.
The scene on the House floor was raucous as Democrats objected to the motion to adjourn, forcing a vote on the issue. They sought to stay in session for the evening, something that would have likely meant another embarrassing roll call vote and defeat for McCarthy. And Democrats nearly got their wish. With the tally neck and neck, Democrats at one point rushed one member through the aisles to cast her ballot before the House clerk called a close to the process. But some Republicans switched their votes to adjourn, eventually giving them a 216-214 majority in favor of adjournment.

Kevin McCarthy is addicted to losing.
Twenty-one Republicans did not vote for the House speaker hopeful on the fourth, fifth, and sixth ballots on Wednesday. Twenty voted for Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), who was the only Republican to vote for McCarthy on Tuesday before changing his vote on the third ballot, while one, Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.) voted “present” after having voted for McCarthy on Tuesday.

Updated with third vote: The House adjourned late Tuesday afternoon as Republicans grapple with what to do next, with Kevin McCarthy failing to secure enough votes for speaker after three ballots.
Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-tx) told reporters that he wasn’t sure what the next steps will be. He said that “there is a deep sense of animosity. You’re going to have to come back from it because in the end, you just got to. You just got to work together. We’ll see. We’re not there yet.”

Kevin McCarthy really, really, really wants to be speaker of the House of Representatives. It’s not coming. The 118th Congress began on Tuesday, and though Republicans won control of the chamber last November, a not-insignificant portion of the party remains steadfastly opposed to giving McCarthy the gavel. McCarthy has lost three consecutive speakership ballots, with 19 Republicans opposing him on the first two, and 20 on the third.
Rep. Byron Donalds joined the 19 other defectors to vote against McCarthy on the third ballot, which means McCarthy is drifting even further away from securing the majority necessary.

Fox News Media said it has parted ways with legal analyst Andrew Napolitano, following an associate producer’s claim of sexual harassment.
The employee, John Fawcett, who works on Fox Business Network’s Kudlow, filed a lawsuit Monday in New York Supreme Court (read it here) against the network, outlining his claims against Napolitano.
Fawcett also alleged that Larry Kudlow, the host of the show, has used ethnic slurs and made sexually inappropriate comments about women “in front of multiple staffers,” including himself and a senior vice president. He also claimed that Kudlow nixed the appearance of Rep. Byron Donalds (R-fl) on the show because of his race.
In a statement Fox News Media said: “Upon first learning of John Fawcett’s allegations against Judge Andrew Napolitano, Fox News Media immediately investigated the claims and addressed the matter with both parties. The network and Judge Napolitano have since parted ways.
