This concludes my look back at 2015 with the newer new albums -- the ones with new, or at least contemporary, compositions, most by living composers.
1. Soloists/Warsaw Boys' Choir/Warsaw Philharmonic Male Choir/Warsaw Philharmonic Choir & Orchestra/Antoni Wit Penderecki: Magnificat; Kadisz (Naxos) Naxos' invaluable Krzysztof Penderecki (b. 1933) project continues to bring us conductor Antoni Wit's impeccable renderings of the Polish composer's complex and challenging music, especially excelling in the choral works, as here. One of the longer settings of this text (here nearly 45 minutes), Penderecki's Magnificat (1973-74) is also epic in sound, written in a high-avant style similar to his iconic St. Luke Passion, with extended singing effects (especially long glissandi, but also speaking and whispering), highly disjunctive melodies, extremely dense dissonance, and colorful cluster interjections by the orchestra, especially the winds.
It has a prominent if intermittent role for solo bassist (here Wojtek Gerlach), surprising...

In this week’s podcast, Deadline’s executive editor David Lieberman and host David Bloom recap one heck of a week in the business of providing services that looks more or less like television across all kinds of delivery platforms. The Ncta cable-tv conference opened in Los Angeles, attracting numerous big-name speakers such as the FCC chairman, but big deals also seemed to be breaking out everywhere. There was talk of a massive deal between At&T and DirecTV Networks; a $20-billion swap of subscribers between Charter and Comcast, and Viacom’s $757 million acquisition of the UK’s Channel 5. Along the way, DreamWorks Animation’s Jeffrey Katzenberg seemed to write off his core business, and got roundly whacked by another media mogul, Jeff Bewkes of Time Warner. Deadline Awards Columnist Pete Hammond talks with host David Bloom about this week’s film nominations for the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, plus the American Film Institute’s picks for the year’s best, and what they all might portend for an increasingly complicated and competitive Oscar race. And though ’tis the season for film awards, they also take a look at the three organizations’ picks for best TV shows and performances of 2013. Pete also gives his take on this week’s new movies, led by Peter Jackson’s eagerly awaited The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the second installment in his J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy; the fine tale of Walt Disney’s prickly relationship with the Mary Poppins creator P.L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks; and the cross-dressing Christmas comedy Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas. Deadline Awards Watch episode 54 (.MP3 version) Deadline Awards Watch episode 54 (.M4A version...

Deadline’s International Editor Nancy Tartaglione talks in this week’s podcast with host David Bloom about winnin’ time on the Continent, as the prizes are handed out in the British Independent Film Awards and the European Film Awards, including wins for Oscar contenders The Act Of Killing, The Great Beauty, Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer, The Broken Circle Breakdown and Metro Manila. Separately, David and Nancy take a look at just-unveiled British tax credits that should be a boon to film projects of all budget sizes and also may entice more overseas visual effects work to the country’s post-production houses. They also applaud the innovative new interactive trailer the BBC has trotted out to tout the imminent return to air of Sherlock, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, two years after its last episode aired. Berlin hosts around 50 different film festivals each year, but the most eye-catching of them all remains the Porn Film Festival. Created eight years ago by a group of queer porn experts (aren’t we all?), the festival draws a huge crowd to each edition, exposing jolly viewers to anything but the usual mainstream in-and-out action. The latest edition opened with James Franco produced "kink" (a documentary about the bondage site kink.com) and featured an overall program as eclectic and varied as sex can be: fiction films, documentaries, experimental and short films of all shapes and sizes. Here are a few takeaways from this writer's excessive exposure to porn. 1. There is no single definition of what constitutes a "porn film." While choreographer David Bloom's "Quintet" attempted to combine sex and improvisatory dance, "Bike Smut 7: The Porny Express" showed much love for sex on -- and with -- bikes.
