Fredriksson’s management company, Dimberg Jernberg Management, confirmed her death. Her Roxette bandmate, Per Gessle, also issued a statement on social media and via Dimberg Jernberg, saying, “Time goes by so quickly. It’s not that long ago we spent days and nights in my tiny apartment in Halmstad, listening to music we loved, sharing impossible dreams. And what a dream we eventually got to share!

Before they were ever a duo, Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle of Roxette were already successful solo artists in Sweden. When they paired up however to go on tour they seemed unstoppable for a while in the 80’s and through to the 90’s. They took their fair share of breaks and in 2002 when Fredriksson was diagnosed with a brain tumor Gessle went on to achieve solo fame again until they reunited in 2009. Since then their songs have continued to be played on the radio and remembered by fans near and far as some of the best music that’s

Once a blockbuster staple, the power ballad was the ultimate movie accompaniment. We look back at some of the classics...
For a glorious period from the mid-80s throughout the 90s, the biggest summer blockbusters were only worth their salt if they had an equally gargantuan song at the head their soundtrack. Often the success of one was inexorably linked to the other, with the likes of Four Weddings And A Funeral's feats matched and even exceeded by Wet Wet Wet's accompanying Love Is All Around.
The greatest and most successful songs belong to the power ballad genre, and are as emotionally charged and forceful as the gods of epic balladry such as Journey, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi and Meat Loaf. As the 90s became the 00s and the charts became increasingly irrelevant, the movie ballad became almost defunct, with even the song-dominant film soundtrack being...

It’s been 25 years since the release of Garry Marshall‘s timeless fairytale, Pretty Woman. When it arrived in theaters back in 1990, the film opened to mixed reviews, but the dramedy starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere would become a box office smash and a cultural touchstone.Twenty five years later, Pretty Woman is a beloved classic, not to mention a pop culture reference in movies like Romy and Michele’s High School reunion and TV shows like Broad City and Parks and Recreation. From those unforgettable outfits to those endlessly re-quotable lines, we’ve picked the 25 most iconic things from Pretty Woman.
1. It Turned Julia Roberts Into a Full-Fledged Movie Star
Yes, the actress broke out in Hollywood in the late ’80s thanks to her work in Mystic Pizza and Steel Magnolias, but it wasn’t until she nabbed the role as bubbly, sexy hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold Vivian Ward that she became an A-list leading lady.

No one expected much from "Pretty Woman" when they were making it. It was a modestly-budgeted romantic comedy whose stars were Richard Gere (then in the depths of a career slump) and Eric Roberts's kid sister. But when the movie was released, 25 years ago this week (on March 23, 1990), the project was transformed from overlooked stepsister to box office royalty. Mirroring her on-screen Cinderella makeover, Julia Roberts went from little-known ingenue to queen of Hollywood. Plus, the film saved Gere's career and (along with 1989's "When Harry Met Sally") revived the romantic comedy genre in Hollywood.
A quarter-century later, "Pretty Woman" remains a fan favorite, one you've seen a million times on cable. Even so, there's much you may not know about the movie -- the difficulties in casting (Gere and Roberts weren't anyone's first, second, or third choices), crises on the set, what was left out of the final film,...

SXSW is barely 24 hours away from starting (catch up with part one and part two of our preview pieces here), and at this point, it's important to be reminded that one of the things that makes the festival unique is a particular focus on the crossover between music and film, something that's been a special interest of ours since the very earliest days of The Playlist. SXSW doesn't just have a whole sidebar dedicated to music documentaries (with this year's batch including films centered on LCD Soundsystem, Paul Simon and Big Star), and a music festival that runs alongside, but the films screened seem to attract a disproportionate number of scores by indie and rock musicians.

While Sundance still gets the headlines, the last few years have seen the film strand of South By Southwest, the Austin, Texas cultural conference, become just as vital to the movie world as Robert Redford's baby. The past few festivals alone witnessed some of the best movies of their respective years debut, from low-budget indies like "The Puffy Chair," "Beeswax," "Tiny Furniture" and "Cold Weather" to more mainstream fare like "I Love You Man," "Adventureland" and "Bridesmaids," to international genre hits like "Kill List," "Attack The Block" and "Monsters."

Things we learned from the latest two-hour installment of The X Factor: Nicole Shirthanger realizes she’s not L.A. Reid or Simon Cowell — she’s sorry about that! — but she’s a really hard worker. Paula Abdul “represents everything a woman wants to be” (at least according to a spelling-challenged member of all-female vocal act 2Squar’D who has never heard of Marie Curie, Madeline Albright, Mother Teresa, or countless other powerful ladies who’ve graced our humble planet with their presence). And there’s nothing ominous — nothing ominous at all! — about a middle-aged man in a shirt unbuttoned...

Yesterday, the track listing for the "Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1" was revealed and now everyone is buzzing about Bruno Mars' hot new song for the franchise, "It Will Rain."
"Rain" is the perfect soundtrack song – a big, sweeping ballad co-written and co-produced by Mars' team, the Smeezingtons – and seems an ideal fit for "Breaking Dawn." And it got us thinking about our favorite soundtrack tunes. When a one-off tune from one of our favorite artists is tied to a movie you, it's the icing on a very tasty cake.
After the jump, a rundown of some of our favorite soundtrack tunes. We tried to stay away from musicals – with the exception of "Moulin Rouge" – because that's whole different can of worms, and we aimed for songs that we felt really belonged in the movies in which they appear.

Whether or not you’ve recovered from Pia Toscano’s shocking elimination from American Idol, the Season 10 show will trudge on Wednesday night with the Top 8 performing a “Songs From the Movies” theme. On paper, it could be a terrific 90 minutes of music — as long as the contestants aren’t limited to a list of 20 treacly ballads from Disney soundtracks, Celine Dion, and Bryan Adams. In my spirit of undying/naive optimisim, I’ve cooked up song suggestions for the remaining finalists. Ch-ch-check ‘em out, then brainstorm some ideas of your own in the comments. And for all my Idol news and commentary,...

A bad, earwormy soundtrack song is a lot like jingles from local radio and television commercials -- they're not really meant to be good. They're meant to stick in your brain and remind you, interminably, of the product the song is essentially advertising. And it just jangles and jangles around in your brain for hours upon hours, killing brain cells and offering an unwelcome reminder of the product you're meant to buy. They work, too. How many of you know this telephone number: 1-800-54-giant? Or this telephone number: 588-2300? Likewise, you hear the songs below, and whether you want to or not, in most cases, you think of the movie. It's brilliant execution. And it makes me want to tear the limbs off of bunnies and shove the stumps into someone's eye sockets.
Here's the ten most painful, earwormiest soundtrack songs of all time.

This year's Golden Globes had some surprises and let-downs for everyone, but one of the stranger picks (in my opinion, anyway) was a nod for the Avatar theme by Leona Lewis, "I See You." Like it or not, this pop confection has become quite the ear worm and even has worn some fans of the film down to the point where they like it. (Maybe it's Stockholm syndrome?)
Coincidentally, James Cameron's Titanic also served up a seriously damaging, and perhaps more potent, ear worm in the form of Céline Dion's Oscar-winning song "My Heart Will Go On," written by James Horner and Will Jennings. Like it or not, Dion's soaring vocals stuck with you long after leaving the theater, probably because it was being played everywhere.
Others include "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston from The Bodyguard, which she also starred in with Kevin Costner, "The...

Roxette star Per Gessle has hinted that the Swedish duo could make a comeback in the near future. The guitarist admitted that a reformation is more likely following singer Marie Fredriksson's successful treatment for a brain tumour in 2002. "We've talked about it. It's really up to Marie. She's started doing a few concerts before Christmas as a guest artist in Sweden, which was a big success for her, so slowly but surely she's coming back to the stage," he told the BBC. "I would love to do more Roxette (more)...
