A hit song from the 1980s had lyrics similar to The Beatles‘ “Blackbird.” One of the writers of the 1980s song said he was upset by the similarity. In addition, he said The Beatles’ song might be based on a book by a famous author.
The Beatles | Keystone Features / Stringer The accidental similarity between The Beatles’ ‘Blackbird’ and Mr. Misters’ ‘Broken Wings’
Richard Page is a member of the band Mr. Mister, most known for the song “Broken Wings” and “Kyrie.” During a 2010 interview with Smashing Interviews Magazine, he named some of his influences. “The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett,” he said.
Both Mr. Mister’s “Broken Wings” and The Beatles’ “Blackbird” include the phrase “Take these broken wings and learn to fly.” Page was asked if this was an intentional reference on the part of Mr. Mister.

In September of 1986, Miles Davis released Tutu, his first album for Warner Bros. after three decades as a Columbia artist. But what fans of the late trumpeter didn’t know at the time was that he had originally started recording an entirely different LP for the label. Begun in 1985 and eventually shelved before it was complete, that album — Rubberband — will finally come out on September 6th, following a preview Ep that came out on Record Store Day 2018.

The holiday season is nearly upon us, and anyone with a yen to perform should seriously consider asking Santa for a fraction of Ringo Starr‘s musicianship, stamina and stage presence. The 77-year-old rock icon commanded the stage at Manhattan’s opulent Beacon Theater Wednesday night, spoiling a sold-out crowd of New Yorkers with over two hours of peace, love and music.
He was flanked by the longest incarnation of his ever-evolving All-Starr Band, featuring luminaries like power-pop wizard Todd Rundgren, Toto guitar great Steve Lukather, Richard Page of Mr. Mister, and Gregg Rolie, who recently reunited with his former colleagues in Santana.

People have a pretty intimate relationship with music. The song that was playing when you had your first slow dance, broke up with that certain someone, or lost your virginity will rank higher for you than it will for some random listener. Even bad songs have a way of causing flashbacks, for better or worse. So when a movie ties a song to imagery we never imagined while making out in the back seat, it can shake up our reality a little. Say Anything permanently connected Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” with boom boxes and early-morning wake-ups, and who among us can hear Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” without regretting that they spent good money to see Sleeping with the Enemy? Here are some other songs that celluloid changed forever.

Well, my friend the time has come: Lionel Richie is turning 65-years-old on Friday, even though he doesn't look like he's aged since he (and his mustache) popped that pink collar and stared at us from the cover of his 1982 solo album.
The Grammy winning singer, former Commodore and leather pants enthusiast looks like he can still karamu, fiesta, forever. On June 14, Richie made a well-received appearance at the Bonnaroo music festival – and he's currently on the road with his All the Hits, All Night Long tour. Looking for a little throwback flavor to your summer movie viewing? Something a little retro, perhaps a bit lo-fi, but with its heart in the right place? Well, "Ping Pong Summer" could fit the bill. The Sundance comedy is coming to theatres today, and if the movie doesn't grab you, perhaps the soundtrack will. Comprised largely of '80s jams, "Ping Pong Summer" is mixtape ready, so grab your Nikes and a boombox and check it out. From hip-hop novelty act The Fat Boys to the earnest crooning of Mr. Mister, to the snazzy troupe New Edition to the we-barely-remember-you Mary Jane Girls, this one feels like it needs to be put on cassette. Either way, it feels perfect for the 1985-set coming-of-age story that brings together the cast of Susan Sarandon, John Hannah, Lea Thompson, Amy Sedaris, Robert Longstreet and newcomer Marcello Conte. "Ping Pong Summer" opens today is on VOD.

The mid-’80s are an easy source of comedy. Boomboxes the size of Samsonites. John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. Pac Man Fever. White teens trying to moonwalk. All of these sonic and visual punchlines get a workout in writer-director Michael Tully’s Ping Pong Summer — a fun-but-slight coming-of-age story about an awkward Maryland teenager who becomes, well, not a man exactly, but a slightly more comfortable teenager, on a family vacation during the magical summer of 1985.
If that description sounds familiar, that’s probably because Ping Pong Summer has the misfortune of coming after two similar — and better...

Premiering at Sundance in January, and headed to theaters this summer, "The Way, Way Back" is not only riding high with strong notices out of Park City (including our own) but it's also bringing with it a pretty nice little soundtrack for the coming-of-age tale. The tracklist mixes hip, young actors like electro popsters Young Galaxy and Wild Belle, and the pleasant Ben Kweller, with veterans like Edie Brickell (sans the New Bohemians it seems), Robert Palmer, Mr. Mister and Inxs. Talk about your flashbacks. But overall, it's well rounded with the songs suggesting they've been chosen more to evoke a certain mood, rather than sign up whoever Pitchfork is hot for this month. "The Way, Way Back" soundtrack drops on July 2nd with the movie rolling into theaters starting on July 5th. Details below. [Film Music Reporter] "The Way, Way Back" Soundtrack Tracklisting 1. Last night was the last opportunity for final three on Season Three of The Voice to sing their way into America's heart, and they each went at it from a different angle. They were showcased with one song for voting consideration, one duet with their respective coaches and a reprise of the song that was considered their "breakthrough." While both Terry McDermott and Nicholas David made valiant efforts, only Cassadee Pope's performance of Faith Hill's "Cry," seemed to be finals-grade. Pope went for what she knows works: grandiose country-pop balladry,...

The Voice's final live performances opened last night with a group rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," in somber tribute to the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Connecticut.
On a candlelit stage, all the contestants joined Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera in holding name cards of the victims and their ages, leaving not a dry eye in the house.
Then it was down to business, although very little from last night was likely to change the outcome. Cassadee Pope, Terry McDermott and Nicholas David have already distinguished themselves this fall.
We have no way of knowing how close the voting has been since the live shows began, but the three clearly have diverging fan bases and musical styles. It's all going to come down to whose fans vote.

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.
Here is the complete list, including my favorite lost song of the decade. Thank you for taking this 80's road trip with me ... but it's not over yet! I'll be featuring a new Lost Hit once a week in the Wednesday Briefs, so the history lesson will continue!
Let the countdown commence, and remember ... keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars!

Coming from a group that isn't necessarily known for taking a huge number of musical chances, Train's sixth record, "California 37," is one of the year's most lyrically bold albums. Would that this were a good thing. You might even say Pat Monahan has gone off the rails since writing 2001's "Drops of Jupiter," still one of the most perfectly formed singles of the 21st century. Invoking Mr. Mister because it rhymed with "soul sister" a couple years ago abetted his band's comeback, and that success has given Monahan courage to write...

Kicking off Winter Music Conference 2012 in unique style, Edm enthusiasts ventured to Liv last night for Laidback Luke's superhero-themed "Super You and Me" party. You may be familiar with Luke’s long-running franchise that’s based on the idea of “saving civilization from mediocrity through music.” At the parties, club patrons are encouraged to dress as their favorite super hero, although last night some seemed to have dug deep into the Halloween archives for any random costume they could conjure up. Even bunnies, angels and demons bounced around to some highly energetic sets from Oliver Twizt, Zedd, Madeon and Luke, who headlined the show.
Zedd, sporting a superman costume, roused the crowd early in his set with his recent remix of Skrillex’s banger "Breaking a Sweat." The young German talent kept true to his signature style of filthy bass riffs throughout, including his originals “Shave It” and “Shotgun.

His days of drumming for The Beatles are long behind him, but Ringo Starr has adopted a new hobby over the past two decades: Bringing musicians together and going on tour with them.

When Lady Gaga took the stage at the Staples Center in Los Angeles to receive the award for Best Pop Vocal Album at Sunday night's (February 13) Grammy Awards, she gave a shout-out to a very special diva who has been relatively under the radar as of late. While accepting her award (one of three she took home on Sunday night), Gaga noted that she was picturing Whitney Houston singing "Born This Way" when she wrote it. "I need to say thank you tonight to Whitney Houston," Gaga said. "I wanted to thank Whitney because when I wrote 'Born This Way,' I imagined she was singing it because I wasn't secure enough in myself to imagine I was a superstar. So Whitney, I imagined you were singing 'Born This Way' when I wrote it."

October is the nuttiest movie month of the year, if only because a parade of awards bait usually butts up against straggling action movies not quite big enough for summer and a series of gruesome horror movies. It's a delightful collision of styles that always makes for an eclectic (if sometimes schizophrenic) trip to the local cinema. This week features a handful of big-name releases, including the race horse biopic "Secretariat," the romantic comedy that centers around the horrible death of new parents "Life as We Know It," the kooky comedy "It's Kind of a Funny Story," the sharp fallen economy documentary "Inside Job" and the acting tour-de-force "Stone." But if you want to find the MTV Newsroom crew sitting in the dark this weekend, you'll have to buy a ticket to see Wes Craven's new frightfest "My Soul to Take." It's creepy, kooky, mysterious, spooky and altogether ooky,...

MacGruber Blu-RayUNIVERSAL Home ENTERTAINMENT2010/Rated R & Unrated/Running Time 91 & 95minsAvailable September 7 – List Price $39.98Just because it makes a hilarious series of SNL skits, doesn't mean it would make a good movie. MacGruber is one of those films I watched in a theater and constantly muttered to myself “What the f*** is this?” I don't mind the idea behind the story, which basically takes elements from TV's MacGuyer and adds them to a ridiculous mullet-headed fool, but the film gets sooo asinine and stupid by tripping on its own ambitions. Star and writer Will Forte along with director/co-writer Jorma Taccone try too damn hard. Their attempt to expand upon their original material with extreme vulgarity and bathroom humor is so over-the-top, its no wonder that Paramount Pictures, the studio which produces and distributes most of the SNL movie adaptions, passed on the project. Makes me miss the days of Jake and Elwood.

Some of the best concerts result from last-minute ticket purchases, and Wednesday night's performance by Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band at Radio City was no exception. The 2010 All-Starr Band is comprised of Richard Page of Mr. Mister, Rick Derringer of the McCoys, Edgar Winter of White Trash, Gary Wright of Spooky Tooth, and Wally Palmer of The Romantics, all of whom are legends in their own rights. The concert began with Ringo's solo hit, "It Don't Come Easy." Over the course of the next two hours, the All-Starrs each played their two biggest hits, interspersed with solo and Beatles hits from Ringo. Derringer's unmatched guitar skills were showcased by his delivery of "Hang On Sloopy," which was one of the best songs of the night, and one of the few songs to top a Beatles song on the...

The MacGruber soundtrack. Co-written by and starring SNL comic Will Forte, MacGruber is effectively a feature length spoof of MacGuyver; a TV show that last aired round about the time the dinosaurs were still strutting their stuff and is these days primarily known for being Patty and Selma Bouvier’s fave small screen thrill.
At least the fact that MacGruber’s satirical target is marooned in the shadow corridor where the ‘80s tipped into the ‘90s gives the former’s tie-in record a semi-legitimate excuse for adhering to the current favoured blueprint for movie soundtracks targeted at a young male demographic, namely parading a mass of ironically-selected retro radio tracks, with a few contemporary college rock stompers thrown into the mix for credibility’s sake.

Plot: A dim-witted all-American operative named MacGruber (Forte) must stop his nemesis Dieter Von Cunth (Kilmer) from detonating a nuclear warhead.
Who’S It For?: Those who have laughed with this character before on “Saturday Night Live” will be able to do so again here, but outsiders must be warned that this is a particular breed of mindless comedy. Also, if you do decide to see this one, go with a friend – the mission of enjoying a movie of this brand is impossible if one goes lone wolf.
Expectations: I felt like I would have an advantage in enjoying this movie as I have a cozy spot in my heart for Hot Rod, another movie with SNL roots that looked like it would share MacGruber’s humor.
Directed by: Jorma Taccone
Cast: Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Philippe, Val Kilmer
Running Time: 1 hr 22 mins
Rating: R

Auditioner Jessica Furney impressed Simon Cowell with a song he co-wrote for Leona Lewis.

By now, it should be obvious what kinds of things capture "American Idol" lead judge Simon Cowell's attention: very attractive, slightly dippy young women, scrawny teenage boys with slightly raspy voices and emotional backstories, and oh, yeah, people who sing songs he wrote.
The latter category took center stage on Wednesday night's final season-nine audition-round show, as repeat auditioner Jessica Furney traded in her Janis Joplin repertoire from season eight for a little ditty called "Footprints in the Sand," which just happens to be a Simon Cowell joint.
"Ah, that's a Simon co-write," songwriter and fellow judge Kara DioGuardi said when the song choice was announced.
The singer's Denver audition found Furney a bit skinnier and more made-up than last time, and her song choice was clearly a smart one.

The summer weekends are quickly running out, so make sure you spent the next few days hitting the beach, seeing "District 9," lounging by the pool, hanging out with Kid Rock or whatever else means "summer" to you. But before you do that, make sure you arm yourself with all of the greatness that came barreling out of the Newsroom this week.
» Sometimes a dance on top of an ice cream cart is just an endorsement of frozen treats, but that's never the case if you're Miley Cyrus at the Teen Choice Awards.
» Still, Miley really should have just pointed out that she was simply paying homage to videos by Aerosmith and Juvenile.
» If you're Taylor Swift, sometimes you think, "My life can't get any more awesome." And then you get a tweet from Ace Frehley and it gets infinitely better.
» There is a secret formula to "America's Best Dance Crew.

Another Disney star is making the crossover from television into the music world. Selena Gomez, star of "Wizards of Waverly Place," just announced that her first album will be called Kiss & Tell and will be coming out soon. Via Twitter, she also unveiled the name she has given to her band. The group will be known as the Scene. Gomez explained that it's meant to be an ironic jab at people who throw the epithet "wannabe scene" at her.
It's not yet clear what the album will sound like, but she is already setting herself up for a certain amount of failure, as the Scene immediately joins the ranks of the following bands in the pantheon of groups with unbelievably boring names.
The Band: It's one thing to have the cojones to be Canadian and play American roots rock, but it's something else entirely to give yourself that kind of moniker.
