Coco Chanel is a name synonymous with a classic style, of simple lines and comfortable fit but not always for everyone. Such is the film Coco Before Chanel, a biopic by Anne Fontaine based on the book Chanel and Her World: Friends, Fashions, and Fame by Coco's official biographer Edmonde Charles-Roux. Fontaine's film is less about the events of Chanel's life and more a window into the provincial beginning and formative years of a woman who defied standards and became an internationally known icon.
Young Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel and her sister were abandoned in an orphanage after the death of their mother. As young women, the Chanel sisters become chanteuses in provincial France. While working as a part-time seamstress, Coco (Audrey Tautou) meets and becomes the courtesan of millionaire playboy Balsan, devilishly played by Benoît Poelvoorde. She moves into his country house, where she hides from his guests at the request of the baron.

Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for Coco Before Chanel, starring the delightful Audrey Tautou (Amelie) as the legendary fashion figure Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel. Directed by Anne Fontaine, the film was partly based on Edmonde Charles-Roux's book, L'Irrégulière: Ou, Mon Itinéraire Chanel, and Fontaine helped adapt it for the big screen. As the title suggests, Coco Before Chanel will follow Coco before she became an icon in the world of fashion -- touching on her time as a youth, her stint as a cabaret dancer and her affairs with the influential men who eventually helped her break into the fashion industry.
Also in the cast are Alessandro Nivola as Arthur "Boy" Capel and Benoît Poelvoorde as one of Chanel's lovers, Balsan. In an earlier post on the first French trailer for Coco Before Chanel, Jessica noted the interesting fact that Nivola -- whose character some say inspired Coco's...

- Now that both Coco biopics are in post production, we'll be in a better to see if the many foreign film markets have enough place for the both of them. The turf war in France will see Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky trailing behind the soon to be released Coco Before Chanel (April release in France), but it looks like Jan Kounen's version is logically, an odds on favorite to be selected for Cannes. With the Igor film exploring the obscure romance between Coco and the Russian composer (played by popular Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen), today, Sony Pictures Classics has claimed Anne Fontaine's version (starring Audrey Tautou), with hers being the one that might work better commercially. If the distribution company is smart, they'll aim to release the film during the Fall fashion season. Coco Avant Chanel is adapted from the Chanel biography "L'Irreguliere" by Edmonde Charles-Roux. Not a lot has been said about the Coco Chanel biopic Coco Before Chanel which stars Audrey Tautou in the title role, but the picture hits French theaters on April 22 and is expected to be released by Warner Bros. later this year and is certainly a film I overlooked and one to consider when talking about the end of year award race. Now an international trailer has made its way online thanks to Sortie-Cine.fr and is available directly below. Anne Fontaine is directing from a script she co-wrote and the film will focus on Chanel's childhood and early womanhood, which apparently was specially conceived with Tautou in mind. The script was adapted from the Chanel biography "L'Irreguliere" by Edmonde Charles-Roux. Check out the trailer directly below and stay tuned as I am sure more on this title will begin to surface shortly.

Looks like it's time for me to brush up on my French. The first trailer for the Coco Chanel biopic, Coco, Avant Chanel (or Coco, Before Chanel) has just hit the web, but the bad news is: the trailer is in French. But even if you don't speak French, you aren't missing too much; between my high school French and the helpful folks at Popwatch, I can tell you that there is talk of destiny, love, and a little pouting, but, c'mon, this is a movie about Chanel; isn't it all about the clothes anyway?
Audrey Tautou stars as the fashion icon (and say what you want, the lady certainly has that Coco 'ennui' down pat in the poster), and the film was loosely based on Edmonde Charles-Roux's book, L'Irrégulière: Ou, Mon Itinéraire Chanel. The book was adapted for the screen by Christopher Hampton (Dangerous Liaisons) and Anne Fontaine...

In the midst of battling Coco Chanel biopics, the first image of Audrey Tautou (Amelie) as the legendary fashion figure has just emerged over at Vanity Fair. I'll admit that after getting my first look at Tautou in that famous 'Coco recline', it is starting to make perfect sense that an entire biopic was shaped around the French actress. If nothing else, you have to admit the the lady is a dead ringer for the style icon.
Coco Avant Chanel was partly based on Edmonde Charles-Roux's book, L'Irrégulière: Ou, Mon Itinéraire Chanel, and was adapted for the screen by Christopher Hampton (Dangerous Liaisons) and Anne Fontaine, who is also directing. The film will not attempt to tell the entire life story of Chanel, probably because it would be impossible to contain that much fabulousness in one film. Instead, Fontaine will be focusing on some of the highlights of Chanel's youth,...

The legendary Coco Chanel revolutionised women's lives by introducing them to the joys of the trouser suit and the little black dress. And now a film biopic, Coco Avant Chanel, hopes to introduce us to the woman behind the quilted handbag - and the first pics from the film, with Audrey Tautou in the starring role, are online.Director Anne Fontaine (who had been taking a hiatus from direction in favour of screenwriting for the past decade) picked up the directing reins from original appointee Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and has opted to steer clear of his quirky stylings in favour of what looks to be a swish costume drama. Fontaine also adapted the story for the screen, from a book written by Edmonde Charles-Roux. Click the image above larger version on ComingSoon.netLooking not a little like a high-budget House Of Eliott, the film co-stars Alessandro Nivola (Goal!) and Female Agents' Marie Gillain.

New York -- Warner Bros. has come aboard to produce and distribute the Audrey Tautou-toplined biopic "Coco Before Chanel."
House of Chanel art director Karl Lagerfeld has been hired to supervise re-creations of the legendary designer's attire. Warner Bros. International is joining Haut et Court, Cine-@, Warner Bros. Entertainment France and Films Distribution as a producer on the feature.
Warner Bros., which has been in talks to join other producers on the French-language project for the past few months, plans to release the film domestically. Given the shuttering of its Picturehouse and Warner Independent Pictures divisions, "Chanel" will be one of the studio's first new tests in handling a specialty release.
Anne Fontaine's adaptation of Edmonde Charles-Roux's biography "L'irreguliere" will focus on Chanel's early years. The four-month shoot will begin Sept. 15 in Paris, with a planned 2009 release.
