Miss America is heading home in 2014. After moving to Las Vegas, Nev. in 2006, the pageant will return to Atlantic City, N.J., where it originated in 1920. A spokesman for New Jersey Governor Chris Christie confirmed the move Wednesday, with an official announcement expected Thursday, the Associated Press reports.
The move caught the Las Vegas Convention and Visitor's Authority off guard, however spokeswoman Courtney Fitzgerald said the group wishes the organization well. "We understand that moving the televised event to various cities showcases America's diverse destinations which represent our great country," she says.
The Miss America pageant, which started as little more than a marketing ploy to keep people in Atlantic City outside of tourist season, consists 53 women, representing each state, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands.
