- [on why he doesn't play his older hits in concerts] I'm not relying on old hits and going through the motions. I think the new records are better than the first two ones. I'm not sentimental about them anymore. I don't want to sound ungrateful -- God knows it's hard enough to get a song to stick, so you're happy about it -- but you want to move on.
- [on Stevie Ray Vaughan] On those shows he got me up on stage for his encores which pretty much blew me away, especially considering it was my hometown. They were super nice to me and a year later when they came through Canada for a second time I got the gig to open again in two different cities.
- Blessed with a lot of wonderful people around me who took the time to show me how to play, I soon realized I was probably going to make a go of it.
- I have always had a deep affection for roots music and it has touched all the music I play whether I'm playing traditional blues music or writing my own.
- [on winning awards]: Well, I guess it's nice when you win and not so much when you lose. It adds some sense of validity and respectability to things. It makes your grandma proud and all that.
- [Advice to aspiring musicians]: Do it because you love it and listen to your heart when it comes to what you believe in musically. Everyone will have an opinion and everyone's tastes vary greatly. Musical taste is a very personal thing, so don't be offended if someone doesn't like what you do. It's going to happen.
- I think by 12 years old I had a pretty good idea this was going to be my life. Music I mean. I kind of went ahead like that was just how it was going to be, kind of like blind faith.
- [observation, 2012] I'm enjoying singing more than ever, and I think I'm more able to sing than ever. I listen to those old records now and I sound like a kid who doesn't know his voice yet. I'm happy about that. My drive is the same as it's always been: I can't wait to make other records. I know the industry is another story, but thank God I've always been a live player.
- You have to make sure that, whatever you're doing, you're doing it with love and excitement and enthusiasm. Being able to not get pigeon-holed in one thing has really allowed me to keep fresh. My living has been made with live music, and they can't take that away from me.
- [observation, 2016] I don't hold a lot of stock in what's going on right now. What's old is new and what's new is old. Who would have ever thought people would emulate '80s pop?
