Postmodern attempts at genre defiance have become de rigueur for pop artists today. In a streaming-dominated world where we can type away on our laptops to ambient hip-hop in the morning, sing along to old yacht-rock hits on our afternoon commute, and dance to Edm at night, what other way is there to keep our attention than to try to give us everything everywhere all at once? We’ve gotten a few attempts to do just that so far in 2023, from Kara Jackson’s quietly rebellious blending of folk and R&b, to Yves Tumor’s kitchen-sink instrumentation, to 100 gecs’s audacious and absurd hyperpop assaults.
Many of the artists who appear on this list, though, no longer seem content to just break down old barriers, as they also seek to shatter interpersonal and emotional ones as well. The oft-cited isolation of modern living, heavily exacerbated by the pandemic, has...

It’s not every day that an album receives polar-opposite reviews. Divisiveness to that extent – the sort that has one critic heralding the record as a glimmering bravura of 21st-century pop music, another comparing it to a bazooka firing out the world’s worst genres at your face – is almost unheard of these days. It’s really quite the feat for 100 gecs. But the duo – Laura Les, 28, and Dylan Brady, 29 – loathe reading reviews. “I hate it,” says Les in her chronic deadpan. “But it’s nice when they’re nice.”
And they are. Reviews of their second album – bar that bazooka comparison – have been very nice, if a little surprised by 10,000 gecs. With 2019’s 1000 gecs, Les and Brady did not so much burst onto the scene as explode. Their debut is a flash-bang of high-energy dance-pop as you’ve never heard it, sliced through with razor-sharp shards of ska, dubstep,...

Just a couple of weeks after sharing their new album 10,000 gecs, 100 gecs took over Los Angeles’ Boiler Room the other night for a DJ set that incuded — among an array of bangers — a very gec-ified version of “Toxicity” by System of a Down.
It’s not too difficult to trace Laura Les and Dylan Brady’s abrasive, industrial hyperpop back to System of a Down’s adrenaline-fueled nu-metal. The duo toned down the original track’s guitars in favor of chopped-up instrumentals, a few beat drops, and bass boosted loud enough to cause some minor tectonic shifts.
The hour-and-a-half-long set also included House of Pain’s “Jump Around,” Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll,” Harry Belafonte’s “Jump in the Line” back-to-back with Smash Mouth’s “Walkin’ on the Sun,” Skrillex’s “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” mashed up with Vince Staples’ “Yeah Right,” and many other great choices. See 100 gecs’ remix of “Toxicity” below,...

On their new album, 10,000 Gecs, the hyperpop 100 Gecs face down life after going viral with their breakthrough album, 2019’s brilliantly realized 1000 Gecs. It’s a challenge familiar to every extremely online disruptor, from Death Grips and Slayyyter to Danny L Harle of PC Music. Do you double down on the manic internet fusillade, or moderate your antics into tastefully eccentric pop bait? It’s the punk conundrum, Gen Z style.
To be sure, the second album from Dylan Brady and Laura Les contains plenty of genre-blurring craziness. “Billy Knows Jaime,...

100 Gecs are literally burning down the house in the video for “Hollywood Baby,” the latest single off the duo’s upcoming LP 10,000 Gecs.
In the 100 Gecs-directed visual, Laura Les and Dylan Brady set off a Fourth of July amount of fireworks in the confines of their own apartment, risking life and limb to create a music video that perfectly explodes in step with every beat of “Hollywood Baby.”

100 gecs have premiered their new single “Hollywood Baby” along with the reveal of the full tracklist for their upcoming sophomore album, 10,000 gecs.
“Hollywood Baby” has been a staple of the 100 gecs’ live repertoire since its debut in late 2021, but now gets its full-fledged studio treatment by the experimental pop duo, comprised of Laura Les and Dylan Brady, with some crucial contributions from drummer (and tourmate) Josh Freese. The ripping track quickly tears away any illusions of Tinseltown glamor as Les tells the titular “Malibu Barbie” to “go pitch your fit/ No one gives a shit/ Better off if you just get over it!”
100 gecs similarly let the Hollywood scene go up in flames for the song’s accompanying music video, which sees Les and Brady light fireworks inside their apartment while dancing among the smoke and debris. The visual, directed by the duo and edited by longtime collaborator Weston Allen,...

Lollapalooza 2022 kicked off on Thursday in Chicago’s Grant Park with headliners Metallica, Lil Baby, and Caroline Polachek. Like the variety offered at the topline of the fest, the day featured an eclectic mix of music. From TikTok stars to rock royalty and the return of the Kidzapalooza stage for the first time in three years, there was something for every age group on Day 1. And if there was an underlying theme beyond appealing to a wide swath of fans, a handful of artists with famous kinfolk are taking center stage throughout the four-day festival.

100 Gecs take flight and dance around a desert while local news reports on their whereabouts in their new video for “Doritos and Fritos.” The song is their second single from their highly-anticipated LP, 10000 Gecs.
Directed by Chris Maggio, the playful visual finds the duo peacefully soaring through the air like kites in their purple and yellow wizard robes while the local news and others are hot on their trail. When Dylan Brady and Laura Les are on the ground, they’re seen dancing to the song’s propulsive beat and also fleeing from authorities.
