- Chief Justice of the United States (1986 - 3 September 2005); he had been an associate justice in the Supreme Court from 1972-1986.
- Buried next to his wife at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. Plot Section 5, Lot 7049 Grid W-36.
- In December 1971, he was confirmed as the 100th Supreme Court Justice.
- Diagnosed with thyroid cancer in October 2004, but remained in office until his death eleven months later.
- Served as a law clerk for Justice Robert Jackson and as Assistant Attorney General during the administration of Richard Nixon.
- Born the same day as former President Jimmy Carter.
