Arizona has officially repealed an 1864 abortion ban that the state Supreme Court revived last month.
Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs signed the repeal on Thursday, a day after the state Senate approved it. “While I’m proud to sign this bill and provide a moment of relief for Arizonans, we still have work to do,” Hobbs said. “Arizona women are still governed by a ban that leaves no exceptions for rape or incest, nor does it account for complications during pregnancy.”

It is believed that the notion of multiple realities is founded upon the principles of dichotomy found in symmetry. While different realities, which are alternate versions of each other, share a number of similarities in some of their fundamental principles, some random acts and events differ from each other in both major and minor ways. After all, the varying possible outcomes of a single incident and how that triggers further changes are the core precepts of multiverse theory.
As a thrilling cosmic sci-fi series, Apple TV+’s Constellation aimed to focus on the intriguing concept of alternate realities with a strong emotional undertone. The series excelled in doing so by highlighting the relationship dynamics between astronaut Jo Ericsson and her daughter Alice (and an alternate version of her), but the series’ most complex, poignant commentary on duality in uniformity is shaped through the study of character duo Bud Caldera and...

Reporters pressed Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on whether he plans to run for president today, as he made a visit to Capitol Hill to meet with senators.
At a photo op with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Johnson was asked, “Are you running for president?” and “Do you plan to run for president?” But he did not answer.
Last week, Johnson said on Trevor Noah’s What Now? podcast, “At the end of the year . . . in 2022 I got a visit from the parties, asking me if I was going to run and if I could run,” Johnson said. “It was a big deal. And it came out of the blue. And it was one after the other.”
In the podcast, Johnson did not elaborate on who it was from each party who approached him, and his representatives declined to comment further. But he has previously said that he entertained the idea of a presidential bid,...

New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez is facing a rapidly growing number of calls from his Democratic colleagues to resign from office following a damning indictment on charges of corruption and bribery.
On Wednesday, Menendez pleaded not guilty to the charges during his arraignment in Manhattan court.
The indictment, which was made public on Friday, was initially met with widespread silence from Senate Democrats, save for Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman, who on Saturday called for Menendez’s resignation. “Senator Menendez should resign,” he wrote. “He’s entitled to the presumption of innocence,...

There’s a self-defeating argument I’ve often heard used to explain the state of gun violence in this country. It goes something like this: If we couldn’t change things after 20 first-graders were murdered at Sandy Hook, what hope is there now?
I understand the impulse to give in to cynicism and despair. I also don’t think it serves anyone to ignore the facts. It’s true that gun violence has reached epidemic proportions. In 2021, nearly 50,000 Americans died from gun violence, and tens of thousands more were injured...

The opening bell for the new tag team and its stock, under ticker symbol Tko, is only officially set to sound during the second half of 2023, when the partners expect to close the deal. However, Wall Street on Monday analyzed the deal details and initial management commentary, finding some investor questions answered and others raised.
Will another bidder emerge?
The leak of the planned deal on April 2 “should ease investor skepticism concerning Vince McMahon’s seriousness about selling the company,” emphasized Wolfe Research analyst Peter Supino in a report written before the official deal announcement.

Updated, 11:58 Am: Eric Garcetti was confirmed by the Senate as the next U.S. ambassador to India, nearly two years after he was first nominated.
His efforts to win confirmation were stalled last year, amid allegations that he knew of sexual harassment complaints against a top aide but did not take action. Garcetti denied those allegations, but it created divisions within the Democratic caucus.
The Senate voted 52-42 for confirmation, with seven Republicans in support and three Democrats against.
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-oh), Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-hi) and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-az) voted against the nomination. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-sc), Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-tn), Sen. Susan Collins (R-me), Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mt), Sen. Todd Young (R-In), Sen. Roger Marshall (R-ks) and Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-la) supported the nomination.

It’s been a headline-making weekend at the Kelly-Giffords household in Tucson, Arizona.
The couple celebrated the news Friday that Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly had been re-elected to his first full term representing Arizona, winning a tight contest with Republican Blake Masters. That bulletin was followed by the announcement today that CNN will premiere Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down, the acclaimed documentary about the former Congresswoman, next Sunday, November 20.
The film from Oscar nominees Julie Cohen and Betsy West, documents Giffords’ arduous rehabilitation from a near-fatal shooting in January 2011, a tragic event that stopped her ascent as a rising star in the Democratic Party.

Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto won election to a second term representing Nevada on Saturday, defeating Republican Adam Laxalt to clinch the party’s control of the chamber for the next two years of Joe Biden’s presidency.
With Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly’s victory in Arizona on Friday, Democrats now hold a 50-49 edge in the Senate. The party will retain control of the chamber, no matter how next month’s Georgia runoff plays out, by virtue of Vice President Kamala Harris’ tiebreaking vote.
Democrats’ hold on the Senate is a blow to Republicans’ high hopes of wresting away control of Congress in a midterm election that typically favors the party out of power. It was still unclear which party would control the House of Representatives as counting continued in razor-tight races in California and a smattering of other states.

Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-nv) was projected to win reelection over Adam Laxalt in Nevada’s U.S. Senate race, assuring Democratic control of the Senate.
The latest vote tallies were enough for networks to call the race for Cortez Masto, who trailed until final mail-in ballots were counted in more populous counties like Clark and Washoe.
Coupled with the reelection of Sen. Mark Kelly (D-az) in the Arizona Senate race, Cortez Masto’s razor-thin victory gives Democrats a sense of relief, assuring that they will have at least 50 seats. Had they lost the race, it would have meant that the December 6 runoff in Georgia between Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-ga) and Republican Herschel Walker would have determined who controls the chamber. Now, if Democrats lose that seat, they will still have control of the 50-50 Senate, as Vice President Kamala Harris will break any tie vote.

It’s official: Democrats have clinched control of the U.S. Senate. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, one of the Democrats’ most vulnerable incumbents, has fended off a challenge from conservative nepobaby Adam Laxalt and guaranteed her party at least 50 seats in the Senate. With the tie-breaking vote from Vice President Kamala Harris, the chamber is now certain to remain in Democratic hands. Tucker Carlson has a type. He likes hardline nationalists who can cosplay anti-elitism while pretending they didn’t go to an Ivy, or have an heiress mother, or have the richest people in the country funding their campaign. He likes the kind of candidate who blends hateful nativism and a fear of the impending collapse of Western Civilization, with mockery of blue-haired, cat-owning coastal liberals.
Turns out Tucker’s type may not be super electable.
As Republicans scramble to find an explanation for their poor midterm showing, finger pointing abounds.

Incumbent Senator Mark Kelly has defeated far-right Republican challenger Blake Masters, AP reports, denying conservatives a seat they sunk millions into and dealing yet another blow to former President Donald Trump’s endorsement power. Kelly’s win puts Democrats just one victory away from sealing control of the chamber and with Vice President Kamala Harris’ tie-breaking vote, their party can retain Senate control by cinching either the Nevada race or next month’s Georgia runoff.

Mark Kelly has been elected to a full six-year term in the U.S. Senate for the state of Arizona. The incumbent’s close victory puts the Democrats one vital step closer to continuing to control the upper chamber.
Three days after the midterm elections, CNN, Nnc and others declared the former astronaut, who was elected to the Senate in a special 2020 election, was on a solid trajectory to beat Republican challenger Blake Masters in the former home of John McCain. The race for Arizona governor is still too close to call, but Democrat Adrian Fontes has now been declared the winner for the state’s pivotal Secretary of State position over self-described Oath Keeper Mark Finchem.

On Tuesday, Kerry Washington joined Vice President Kamala Harris and Los Angeles mayoral candidate Rep. But just before this, the actress and activist completed a three-day, four-state trip that she has termed the “S.O.S. Stephen Colbert celebrated the absence of the “Red Wave” Republicans had predicted for the 2022 midterm elections with some laundry wordplay.
On Thursday’s show, “The Late Show” host rattled off the latest headlines on the topic, such as “The Red Wave Was More Like a Pink Splash.”

Voters did not deliver Republicans the decisive House and Senate victories the GOP anticipated on Tuesday night. Democratic House candidates held onto seats the GOP had been certain to capture. The only Senate seat that changed partisan hands as of Wednesday morning flipped turned blue, not red. For now, the outcome in dozens of House races and a handful of Senate seats remain uncertain, leaving the reins of each chamber unclaimed.

Update, 8:28 Am: Sen. Ron Johnson (R-wi) was projected to defeat Mandela Barnes to win reelection, according to CNN and other networks.
That raises the prospects that control of the U.S. Senate may come down to a runoff race in Georgia, where Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-ga) leads Republican Herschel Walker, but may fall short of the 50 threshold to win outright.
In the two other outstanding Senate races, Sen. Mark Kelly (D-az) leads in his reelection bid against Republican Blake Masters, but Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-nv) trails Republican Adam Laxalt. If those hold, Democrats would need the Georgia seat to tie the Senate 50-50, which is the way things stand now.
Johnson’s victory is a significant defeat for Democrats, who viewed him as one of the GOP’s most vulnerable incumbents. But Johnson hammered Barnes on the issue of crime during the general election campaign, cutting into his polling lead.

Showbiz figures headlined online town halls, fund-raising appeals and campaign endorsements in the final effort before Tuesday’s midterm elections.
Midterm trends favor the party out of power, and polls suggest that Republicans may make substantial gains, particularly in winning control of the House.
But the difficult environment for Democrats did not depress fundraising this cycle. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, showbiz sources have donated almost 57 million to federal campaigns and committees, exceeding the level donated in the last midterm, 2018. Democrats drew 87 of the contributions and Republicans collected 13, more lopsided than any other midterm election since Crp has collected records.
The top candidate recipient of showbiz money was Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-ga), drawing about 1.2 million in contributions from entertainment sources in his effort to retain his seat against Republican Herschel Walker. The top donor was producer Ted Snowdon, who has donated more than 3 million to candidates and committees.

Ben Stiller and Sean Penn are among the latest Americans to be banned from Russia, as both actors were personally sanctioned by the Russian foreign ministry over their support of Ukraine during the current invasion.
Stiller and Penn joined Rob Reiner and Morgan Freeman — both sanctioned in May — on Russia’s ever-growing ban list, a club that also includes President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Attorney General Merrick Garland and more politicians, journalists, intelligence officers and professors.

Sean Penn and Ben Stiller are among 25 Americans permanently banned from entering Russia.
On Monday (5 September), Russia’s Foreign Ministry imposed personal sanctions on a group of Americans in response to US sanctions against Russians stemming from the conflict in Ukraine.
Penn and Stiller have been outspoken critics of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Milk star is an activist involved in relief work, among other causes. In February, he fled Ukraine while filming a Vice documentary about Russia’s invasion of the country.
After which, Penn revealed that he had considered joining Ukrainian forces to fight against Russia.
Meanwhile, Stiller – who’s a goodwill ambassador for the Un High Commissioner for Refugees – praised Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, calling him “my hero”, following a visit to the country on World Refugee Day.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee is canceling 10 million worth of fall advertising reservations in Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — three states at the center of the GOP’s push to regain control of Congress. The New York Times, which reported the news on Monday, notes Republicans have been struggling to raise money as of late, as well as that the decision to pull ads for some of its top candidates could be tied to the party’s financial troubles.

Former U.S. Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband Senator Mark Kelly in the documentary Gabby Giffords Won’T Back Down. Courtesy of Briarcliff Entertainment.
Gabby Giffords Won’T Back Down is an uplifting, inspiring documentary about a woman who truly knows what it means to overcome: former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle “Gabby” Giffords, who was shot in the head by a would-be assassin. Although few even survive such as injury, Giffords not only did survive but made a remarkable recovery, regaining an ability to speak and walk, although she remains partly impaired in both. Much of the credit for her amazing recovery has to go to her own indomitable, optimistic personality – and a remarkable sense of humor – but it is also due to the unwavering support of her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, now an Arizona senator.

Arizona has been a hotbed of false claims of election fraud since President Biden edged Donald Trump there in 2020. Many of the conservatives fueling these claims decided to see if they couldn’t get elected to positions of power so they can help rig future elections. The state’s Republican voters indulged them on Tuesday, handing the party’s nomination for Senate to Blake Masters and for secretary of state to Mark Finchem. However, as of early Wednesday morning, the race for the gubernatorial nomination remained too close to call,...

Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris, a kind Cinderella story for older women with a Dior twist, arrives in 978 theaters this weekend with strong reviews and great word of mouth. The film is a known property among that demo given its prime trailer treatment before Focus Features’ fan favorite Downtown Abbey: A New Era — not a bad setup.
Deadline review here. The film by Anthony Fabian with Lesley Manville, Isabelle Huppert and Jason Isaacs has a 92/critics, 94/audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It shares the pond with a handful of strong studio holdovers and new wide releases Paw Patrol: The Movie and drama Where The Crawdads Sing. Like Crawdads, Mrs. Harris is based on a popular book – the 1958 novel by Paul Gallico – and book clubs are prominent in a large marketing push.
Manville plays Ada Harris, a British housekeeper and widow who dreams of buying her own couture Christian Dior gown.

If you find yourself sobbing through the first half of the new documentary “Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down,” no one could possibly blame you.
Maybe you’ll break at the part where you hear about Giffords’ mother moving to Texas so she could be with her in the hospital every day. Maybe video footage of her early speech-therapy sessions, where she struggles to say her own name, will get you. Perhaps her return to House of Representatives, where she was met with a standing ovation, will put you over the edge.
Whatever your undoing, it’s impossible to withstand much of this powerful film, directed by Julie Cohen and Betsy West, without being overwhelmed.
The documentary opens on a series of white roses in front of the National Mall, each placed to represent an American felled by gun violence. Archival footage in the opening credits then treats us to...

John Oliver checked in on the midterm elections Sunday night, focusing on the Arizona senate race and having a ball tearing through some of the odd Republican campaign ads and strategies.
Arizona is represented by two Democrats: Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly. According to Oliver, Republicans think they can unseat Kelly, but it’s a competitive GOP primary.
First, there’s Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, whose “whole vibe” is on display as he shows off his nunchuck skills in a pair of videos celebrating the end of the state’s ban on the exotic weapons. The first video was apparently so popular that people demanded more, so in the sequel, Brnovich simply says, “You want more chucks? You got more chucks.”

Republican and Democratic Senators have signed onto a tentative agreement for gun reform legislation in the wake of the shooting at a Uvalde, Texas, elementary school.
The proposed deal for bipartisan reform, a group of senators announced Sunday, includes enhanced background checks for buyers ages 18-21 as well as funding for mental health treatment and school security. The deal is a result of negotiations between Sens. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas). CNN, which created the 24-hour news cycle, was also the first to know that it wasn’t enough. Facing increasing competition in real-time news, CNN executives confronted the new reality a decade ago: It needed to evolve or face obsolescence.
It all came down to one question: “What can you give viewers that makes CNN essential?,” Amy Entelis, executive VP for talent and content development at CNN Worldwide, told IndieWire in an interview at SXSW. The answer was more original, exclusive reporting, plus not-news programming from CNN Original Series and CNN Films to offer deeper takes on the people, places, and events that commanded appointment viewing.
Today, CNN faces another pivot. It ranks last place in the cable news ratings, well behind Fox News, but the 40-year-old company is betting that the March 29 launch of CNN+ will reinvigorate the brand. News delivered by boldface talent is of supreme importance; Wolf Blitzer,...

“Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down” begins with the former Arizona representative placing flowers in memorial vases for victims of gun violence. With a voiceover rife with potent pauses, her cadence sounds for a moment like a spoken word poem. While her rhythm is indeed intentional and meaningful, it’s not out of a sense of artistry. Instead, it’s a sign of the aphasia Giffords has wrestled with since a bullet ripped through her brain on Jan. 8, 2011. A gunman obsessed with the congressperson attempted to assassinate her as she was greeting constituents at a Tucson supermarket. Giffords and 12 others survived the mass shooting, but six people did not, including civics-interested Christina-Taylor Green, 9, and federal judge John Roll.

In 2011, former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords survived an assassination attempt that left her partially paralyzed and unable to walk. Tracing her recovery and activism, the title of Julie Cohen and Betsy West‘s documentary “Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down” pretty much says it all. A portrait of Gifford’s resilience juxtaposed against the sheer institutional gridlock that accompanies any attempts at gun reform, Cohen and West’s film is most affecting when centered around Gifford’s recovery process and her relationship with her astronaut husband (and current congressman) Mark Kelly.

Having its premiere today at SXSW, this CNN Films theatrical documentary Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down is a truly inspirational offering an almost verite kind of fly-on-the-wall account of what can only be termed as a comeback story like no other. In 2011 Giffords, an Arizona congresswoman and rising star in the Democratic party had the wind at her back with talk of possibly a Senate or Governor run in the future, even maybe a Presidential one. She was married to astronaut Mark Kelly, and was even looking at adding a new addtion to their family which included his two daughters from a previous marriage. Then it all came crashing down when at a campaign event, she and several others attending were felled by a gunman run amok. Several died that day including a 12 year old girl who was interested in civic studies and tagged along to the rally. Giffords...

Eleven years ago, Gabby Giffords was a popular U.S. Congressman visiting constituents in Arizona when she was shot in the head. Six people died and 19 were injured at the hands of a mentally ill gunman in a parking lot outside Safeway, while Giffords sustained severe brain injuries that left her with aphasia, a condition that makes it difficult for her to put the thoughts in her head into words.
That harrowing backstory strikes a jarring contrast to the chipper woman who arrived for a Zoom interview last week to discuss “Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down,” the new documentary that tells the story of how she and her husband, astronaut-turned-senator Mark Kelly, rebuilt their lives.
Asked how she spends her time these days, Giffords grinned.
“I’m sobusy,” she said, speaking in the short burst of word clusters that define her speech today. “Lotta Zoom calls. Work, work, work.

Julie Cohen and Betsy West knew they had to make their movie “Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down” about former U.S. congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords when, in their first video call with her, they saw that she and her husband, Sen. Mark Kelly, had kept a piece of her skull in a tupperware in their freezer. Right next to the empanadas.
“They showed that to us early on and we immediately were like, that’s a scene in our film,” Cohen told TheWrap, even though in the moment, their documentary didn’t yet exist. “We were just dazzled really by Gabby in particular from that very first wonderful meeting.”
“From the very moment we met Gabby, it was obvious she would make an incredible subject for a documentary,” West added.
